I know that existing GE inverters have EPS functionality if required (2.5kw max for hybrid, 3kw for AC), but obviously this is limited to the connected circuits.

Has their been any further news on the GE UPS/“gateway” equivalent that they are developing?

No. Other than its in testing

Hi TheDragon (GivEnergy) ,

I currently have an AC inverter and a Gen 1 8.2 kWh battery. I am not sure whether to invest in another inverter and more batteries or to go with another brand? My reasons for the later are to have a backup gateway style system and currently my system is readings are quite out and we are importing about 750 watts a day on average even though we have had enough solar and battery to cover all energy usage (GE only exports 200watts on average).

I’m assuming the gateway they are testing would allow the system to react quicker like the Tesla Powerwall & Victron systems? And I assume a complete house backup like those two systems? If thats the case, I am happy to be patient and invest more into GE.

Sorry for hijacking your thread Smk82

I would advise against whole house on EPS.
What happens if the washer is on, you're cooking and the power fails? The inverter can only supply 3kw

Lights yes and a few dedicated sockets, as I have.

TheDragon (GivEnergy) as you say, the Tesla can supply 5kw and 7kw for short periods..

I’m due to be (hopefully) having a 2x3.0kw AC system installed along with the batteries so would be able to cover pretty much whole house load if power went off as up to a 6kw discharge from batteries + the 5kw available from the solar (if it happens during the day).

It’s more the instant response that the Tesla offers that is appealing plus the ability to recharge the batteries if the grid is down otherwise you are only limited to whatever you happen to have in the cells..

I was planning to go with a limited EPS route, but then when I heard a “gateway” was in development have decided to wait for this…

I am considering covering the whole house but use a manual switch to make sure no large power items are running at the time.

The AC3s cant charge batteries in a power cut, as the solar is seperate and without grid, they wont output. Unless you have some elaborate way to switch them in.

Hybrids are designed to do this. Maybe better with Hybrids.

ALso, the EPS cant be paired up. You would need some circuits on one Inverter, and others on the other.
On mains it is fine, however once the grid fails, there is nothing to syncronise too, so they "Free run" so will go out of phase with eache other, causing isues, at best trip the breakers, at worse, damage the kit.

Ive not heard of any work to keep them in phase with each other on EPS. Alothough it is possible, as this ishow grid generators work, they are all in sync with each other

TheDragon (GivEnergy) I never said the ACs could in a power cut as they require some power to work and the solar shuts down for safety. Hence the comment that a full islanding gateway would be preferable so that the solar can at least recharge the batteries in an extended power cut.

I did enquire direct to Giv whether the hybrid would allow the solar to work in a power cut (as I had seen some comments about it earlier) and they relied that they would shut down as well.

Ask on the GivEnergy Owners Facebook page. Plenty of users there have the Hybrid, and it will and is designed to power your home in a powercut, from combined Solar and battery, upto the output limit if combined, or 2.6kw if battery alone.

TheDragon (GivEnergy) my mistake, I just checked back on their reply and your correct. I’m presuming this is because the AC requires grid power whereas the DC hybrid takes what it needs from the solar draw or from the battery in the case of a power cut?
