I get a sneaky suspicion it's more they will come back with a less competitive and more conforming price over anything nefarious.

Rumour has it there’s a hostile takeover from Heinz in the works….
Have you seen Tomato's energy mix 2023-2024:

They are clearly not into renewables.
Rob

Rbor it should in theory get better from Sept 2024 onwards, seeing as we have no Coal stations left....although it'll probably just increase the line for gas off the side of the page!
I imagine if buyers were offered renewables at 7.5/30p or we don’t care where at 5/25p most wouldn’t care.
Sadly right now cost and affordable energy are the main drivers.
Probably need to look at the market to make renewables and hydro storage etc have an advantage. Nuclear not so sure on unless they’re paying into a “cleanup risk” pot.
hoggy it should in theory get better from Sept 2024 onwards, seeing as we have no Coal stations left....although it'll probably just increase the line for gas off the side of the page!
And a couple of years before Hinkley Point goes live. There will be a gap in UK generation v demand
Your missing off the reasoning though
The energy you get through your door is not 100% its the mix Tomato are showing - the other providers are paying for REGOs to claim they are greener.
Similar to car manufacturers buying carbon credits from Tesla to make their overall sales appear more environmentally friendly.
Video on ‘is Tomato Energy in trouble’ https://youtu.be/1rHFp-fA7c0
Ofgem have stepped in and stopped Tomato from taking on new customers and have now launched a full investigation as to whether Tomato is adhering to the financial liquidity rules
https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/publications/tomato-energy-limited-provisional-order
Publicly they are claiming from what I can see that their bad collection strategy of monies owed (aka takes 2-3 months for many to get a bill) meant they couldn't pay for electric and they are currently using this time to correct that and become more solvent.
Hope they survive as happy with my account but does seem to also indicate that the big companies use DD to bolster thier bank account by pushing for credit balance unlike with dynamic pricing which means you need to pay upfront all the time
DreadorUK Let's hope so. It is good to have disruptors in any industry

hoggy Doesn’t read well for Tomato.
Looking on Ofgem’s website, as well as the liquidity investigation mentioned above, there’s an earlier investigation on failure to publish EPG information that’s also open https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/energy-policy-and-regulation/companies/tomato-energy-limited
Im happy to take the gamble and stay paying 5p
Worst case if they go down TOU to SVT and it takes a few weeks to settle, or they go TOU to TOU which would likely by Octopus Go might take longer to sort but not hung out on SVT whilst it happens.
It cant be a repeat of the big hit last time that was 30 companies going bust with millions of customers
Ive just adjusted my times to fit in GO window as such which is still plenty to charge car and battery
DreadorUK Worst case they go bust/license revoked and you're stuck for anything up to 18 months paying SVT and getting nothing for export while Ofgem sorts out who will take the existing customers.
I wouldn't be staying with a company which not only has financial issues, it also has complete contempt for the entire settlements mechanism. They're screwed, just a matter of whether they collapse or another shonky arab wealth fund buys them out.
I wish you the best of luck with your gamble.
Vestas I agree with some of your sentiments. Have in the past been with quite a few smaller upcoming energy providers, and have been through the SoLR process at least twice. TBH it has been relatively painless each time but you do end up being on the new suppliers SVR for a period of time (couple of months in my experience) whilst everything gets sorted out. The only really painful experience was trying to get my smart meter sorted out which had been installed a couple of weeks before my supplier went bust so my new SoLR supplier (Eon) knew nothing about it. Took over a year to persuade them I had a smart meter and that it still wasn’t working.
At the time I didn’t have batteries and only the FIT solar so being on SVR wasn’t such an impact, but now with smarter tariffs and being paid for export, it would be far more impactful.
And in the case of Tomato they seem to be falling foul of industry processes, hence this second Elexon public shaming. Will only be a matter of time before they go bankrupt
Its not going to be 18 months that's scare mongering, last time there were many mitigating circumstances for the delay some meter related which Ofgem have improved process on (and I don't have SMETS1 anyhow) and some of them on the customer holding out on a promised move to better TOU but mostly due to sheer volumes.
We are talking no more than 16,000 customers (less if many have already jumped ship) not the 4.2 Million like before.
The other point is under SoLR process 'You can switch to a different supplier at any time – you don’t need to wait for your new supplier to contact you or for your account to be set up, but we recommend waiting until your new supplier has been in touch.' This rule was in place last time but again it was volumes that made this unworkable.
So yes its a gamble but not the dire odds your implying.
Oh no Solar so I don't have to worry about export rate 🙂
I've been with Tomato Energy since last year, very happy at below 5p night rate. More than 90% of my use is at that night rate, amazing. I have old FIT tariff and getting paid for generation not export, so no difference if they go bust. Will happily continue to use them while it lasts.
Doesn't look like it will be much longer. HRMC has filed a winding up petition against to company.
https://caseboard.io/cases/a57f8618-7547-4d70-9439-9947d6bff97e
DreadorUK Time to bail out now.
lol yeah HMRC is another level - Going to try Eon I think Still peeved with Octopus too much to go back.
Note to anyone who moves to someone like EON and their two weeks of ripping you off standard rate - unless you have power cuts in your area, might be an idea to turn Eco mode off for that period and save losing 40p a day (AIO) on losses and just run house off grid.
Common sense I know but I forgot 🙂

Further signs of Tomato Energy potential collapse published yesterday:
https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/publications/tomato-energy-limited-provisional-order
Suggests Tomato have 3 months from 10 Sept 2025 to get its stuff together or have its supply licence revoked by Ofgem.
I’ve been white-knuckling it thus far - my 12m contract ends next week so will transfer away and hopefully avoid too much time in limbo on SVR.
26Left Only issue with holding on is the your kinda more forced back to IG now over the other options though seems IG is getting cheaper (same night rate but day and standing are dropping)

And now a proposed £1.5m from Ofgem
https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/publications/tomato-energy-limited-failure-maintain-liquidity
So they did not have enough money. Now they have even less
SteveCook I thought about the irony of this fine as well. Must surely be a matter of time before Tomato fold now?
Anyone need a referral code to jump to Octopus? £50 account credit for doing so.
https://share.octopus.energy/lush-king-435
Not 100% sure you will be able to switch in time to avoid the supplier of last resort process (assuming the company does go into administration) but might be worth a shot.
Presumably Tomato Energy's backers have grabbed a load of cash from "the rest of us"?
ie the consumer pays the generators losses for some more wide boys taking the proverbial?
Not quite a "Bulb" moment but with people like Musk* seeking supply licences then this needs to change.
*Regardless of political views Musk is not a stable personality & any company under his control should be viewed the same way. Can't have that in the already stretched UK grid, not with the latest "build where you want regardless of water/sewage/anything etc" rules coming. We have enough home grown problems without him.
It was great while it lasted. 😃 I signed up early and still have a £0.047 per kWh tariff for six hours overnight. I use that window for all my heavy appliances and to charge the battery. I do wonder who they’ll move me to once they’re officially declared defunct.
bRhFDKtjRMK9
If you are able I would try and move now. If you leave it to the default transfer scenario you will be placed upon their standard tariff and be paying a lot more than you are now. You can move but it will take your intervention to do so. If you move now you can hopefully have some choice in the matter.
The only argument I can think of against this is if your account is in a lot of credit. You may be better off in that circumstance in waiting to be transferred as in that case you are guaranteed to get the full credit amount transferred. If you move now getting the credit may be harder and may only get a small percentage of what is owed to you as a normal creditor.
killythebid The only argument I can think of against this is if your account is in a lot of credit. You may be better off in that circumstance in waiting to be transferred as in that case you are guaranteed to get the full credit amount transferred.
I was under the impression that Tomato didn't do fixed monthly DD, allowing credit to build up or anything. It was strictly pay what you owe on receipt of bill.
DD I don't know I have never used Tomato as a supplier. If what you say is the case then I would move now if possible. I went through a transfer after failed supplier and whilst it all worked out in the end I would not wish to repeat the experience.
I’ve been through the SOLR process twice, ending up at Octopus and Eon.
At the time it wasn’t a major issue, I ended up on the SVR tariff that was paying more than I had been paying with the supplier that failed, but electricity was a lot cheaper then, I didn’t have batteries or the heat pump and my only solar panels were on the FIT scheme (so deemed export not actual export payments).
So wasn’t a big deal to be on SVR, but I do remember it took at least a couple of months for the transfer to occur before I could then move to another supplier.
I absolutely wouldn’t want to go through that process now, so yes definitely, if you are on Tomato and can move, do move before they fail and you’re stuck with the move happening to you not of your own control.
The biggest problem I had with the last SOLR to Eon was that my meter had been swapped for a smart meter about 2 weeks before my supplier failed, the smart meter never worked (no external antenna for our rural location), and Eon had no record I had the smart meter. This took over a year to resolve. Mainly of Eon ignoring my emails.

DD I was under the impression that Tomato didn't do fixed monthly DD, allowing credit to build up or anything. It was strictly pay what you owe on receipt of bill.
I suspect that that, and the fact that they were apparently very, very slow in sending out bills (if they sent them out at all!), is one of the reasons they are now in difficulty. That slowness might cause problems for people wanting to change supplier now, as they are likely to still have unpaid bills with Tomato, which - AFAIK - tends to delay the changeover process...
I was tempted to join them when they first started up, entirely due to their low overnight rates. Glad I didn't now,
Been with Tomato now since around March and have been loving the <5p/kwh overnight charging of their battery.
To confirm they bill you far what you used the previous month, for me Sep was £20 inc std charge, so hardly any costs as running the house off the battery and then just making the cheap period overnight and fully charging.
There's nothing on their website, but online is full of stories of it about to go into administration, not 100% sure what to do, do I wait and see or try and jump ship now?
Iguana have a look at the Jonathan Tracey video linked above and make your own mind up
You can stick with Tomato and continue to enjoy the 5p rate but it looks highly likely that they will go into administration at some point soon. They have not been taking on new customers for some time, OfGem have made a provisional award of a significant fine, so whatever pot of money they have must be dwindling, and no new customers means their income and profit is only shrinking.
Jonathan explains it all in the video, but the administrators will try to sell the business as a going concern, if that fails then they will sell of its individual assets and you will be transferred to a new supplier under the Supplier of Last Resort process. You will end up on their standard variable tariff and wont be able to change tariff or move supplier until the SOLR process finishes. Could take 2 weeks, could take 2 months.
Obviously make your own decision about what 2 months of SVR electricity costs you.
Or you can transfer out of Tomato under your own control to whatever other supplier and tariff you want, and yes you’ll pay more than you are paying Tomato at the moment, but you’ll be in control of it.
Or Tomato will weather the storm, will sort their house out and avoid paying the Oftem fine, or they will get extra funding and pay the fine. Of course tariffs could well rise as part of sorting themselves out.
It's not looking good for them...

The problem for Tomato is that any entity interested in owning part of Tomato Energy could instead wait for administration and take control of the whole of the company, and very likely for less money. With the priority of administrator being creditors, you could probably buy the company for a pound if you were in a financial position to settle the debts.
It's a slightly unsettling thought that this might be the easiest way for Elon Musk to enter the UK energy market, although you would have to be very confident you could turn around the current car crash before putting your name to it.
From my understanding the final part is wrong on a few points
SoLR is mandated to take days and at worst weeks - what happened in 2021 was over a million people being moved into a SoLR and all on a mix of tariffs and some on smart some on dumb meters etc and from different companies going under at the same time. Tomato has approx 8000 customers all on like tariff - volume wise this is close to the daily volume of people switching providers to show its no big hit for any company taking them on.
As all customers unlike last time will be on smart meters (which was needed for Tomato) which retain 18 months of data, so then if there was anyone where it took longer, they would be able to complain and be awarded a like for like reduction (if they haven't already switched to a TOU from the SoLR see below)
Once the SoLR is in place and your new provider as acknowledged you as a new customer do not have to wait and can switch to TOU they advise you to wait two weeks but you dont have to
Usage prior to SoLR is still under contractual terms of Tomato and cannot be charged at SVR
So its not as negative as portrayed as any breakage of the above with such low volumes would be easy to resolve under formal complaint.
DreadorUK I’ve been through the SOLR process twice, and each time it took weeks if not a month where I couldn’t change tariff or supplier as I didn’t have an account number nor was I on the new suppliers IT systems.
Sorting out the account balance after transfer then took even longer, probably 2-3 months or so.
Agree, usage prior to SOLR is at your existing tariff, I said that once you are SOLR transferred you will end up on an SVR
It’s a personal choice as to what to do.
Decisions decisions!!!!
Thanks for the feedback, I think it's time to jump ship (May me too late!). so that's the job for today and to not get hung up over trying to get a similar price!
Cheers!
Iguana Sounds like it may be too late. Tomato basically got banned from the energy markets this week and there are already reports of people being moved to Octopus Energy. I don't know if any of these have been verified though.
trustpilot reviews (sort by latest review) https://www.trustpilot.com/review/tomato.energy are generally good praise for the company, but full of people saying that they are leaving

Well I think I may have managed to jump ship - it is a shame as I have found Tomato to be excellent, of course the 5p price has been fantastic, but even when I issues or questions I always received a response.
I'm supposed to go live with E-on Next on the 28th (EV Tariff at 7.5p overnight) and have an account already set-up, a person came round yesterday to read the meter also. Looks like it will go through, but will actually believe things when it finally takes place.
I'll ping an update in a few days
I’ve also decided to jump ship before it collapses — maybe that’s a wise move, so I’m not stuck too long with a forced-switch fixed tariff.
I’ve signed up for the E.ON Next smart tariff: Next Drive Fixed V11 – 7.5p for 6 hours overnight and 28.76p for the remaining hours. My switch date is 30 October.
Tomato Energy just sent me an automatic email confirming the switch:
We're currently the electricity supplier for meter with MPAN x. Unfortunately, we have received a loss notification for this meter. EOND have notified us of our supply ending on 30 Oct 2025.
We’ll see how it goes and if the switch goes ahead in a couple of days!
Well I've gone live today with Eon Next, the switch to the EV tariff is also in progress, have updated meter readings in the system and DD set-up. Have not heard anything from Tomato though.
Iguana Were you switched to the E.ON Next interim fixed tariff yesterday? My account is going through the same process , the switch to the interim tariff starts tomorrow, and after that, it should move to the smart tariff I mentioned in my previous post.
I went with E.ON they didnt get readings quickly, took about 3 weeks and they wanted to charge me variable rate - I did an official complaint and within two days they had agreed to refund the difference as if on Next Drive from day one - hopefully your both fine but if you do hit issues you should find E.ON on the ball in resolving
DreadorUK Excellent. I will follow the same process. My smart meter is working fine, and I see no reason why they would not connect to it upon request (like the same day). So I will be calling them to get me connected quickly.
I’ve now switched to E.ON Next - great news. Jumped the Tomato Energy ship with no consequences.
EON confirmed over the phone that my smart meter is successfully communicating with them. At the moment, I’m on the default flat 25p/kWh tariff for new accounts. I’ve requested to switch to the Next Drive Fixed tariff as soon as possible and opened a complaint to track the progress.
Hopefully, this will speed things up, I’d really prefer not to wait two weeks or more for the change, especially now that my smart meter is already connected.
Sorry for the delay, yes all my went through, took them a few days to connect to automatic meter readings but seems to be working - the app still says I owe them a meter reading, but it states elsewhere my actual usage!
The move to the EV tariff is still in progress, so currently on the standard Next Flex tariff which is 26.8p/kwh - so I've switched off overnight charging and essentially using what little sun there is and drawing from the grid (Battery currently on 2%). Wil re-start overnight charging as soon as I'm on the 7.5p EV tariff.
Finally, as a customer of E-On I can jump into their SEG tariff, I think at 16.5p/kwh, much better than the Octopus 4p I'm currently getting. There's an application process to follow, which takes a month or so, but that's next on the list.
Very well done peeps for holding on so long and still escaping! 😃
I'd have jumped ship long ago....
E.ON has already switched me to the Next Drive v11 tariff. It took them five days. I’m really happy with how quickly it happened. I’ve also set my battery back to full discharge and charge at night. 🙂
Mission Tomato Energy is now complete. I’m glad I switched suppliers in time. If I had waited until the end, I probably would have been stuck on some default variable 25p tariff for much longer.
Iguana Did they switch you already?
Not yet, I moved to eon last Friday, so was going to give them a week then follow up 👍
It's a weird feeling sat with a battery at 4% and not being worried! 😫. Will soon be back though to fully overnight charging

And they’re done. SoLR of last resort to be appointed.
https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/press-release/ofgem-protects-customers-tomato-energy
I got out just in time, at the end of last month, as did my mum.
I’ve gone to So energy, my mother to Good energy.
Both irritatingly set a static monthly DD amount rather than bill you on what you used each month like Tomato and Octopus.
So I recommend if you register / signup, you set your usage to a kWh figure that approximates your expected £ DD bill, and not your kWh usage (assuming you make heavy use of overnight off peak / EV rates for battery charging at 6.x pence / kW).
26Left thanks for sharing, the writing was on the wall for much of this year.
One thing in the Ofgem announcement caught my eye:
Earlier this year Ofgem also introduced the Supplier of Last Resort (SoLR) Levy Offset rule, which will ensure the costs claimed by energy companies under the SoLR levy, for taking on customers from firms that go out of business, will be the liability of the failed supplier. The new rule will ensure that, where funds remain available, keeping costs low for customers will remain the top priority.
That seems optimistic. Most companies that go into administration have debts far exceeding their assets and after administration costs there's barely anything to pay creditors. I suppose its better than not recovering any costs but can't imagine it will recover much. The rest of the UK customer base ends up paying for Tomato's collapse
Iguana Not yet, I moved to eon last Friday, so was going to give them a week then follow up 👍
It's a weird feeling sat with a battery at 4% and not being worried! 😫. Will soon be back though to fully overnight charging
I thought you had switched before me? I submitted my switch and filled out the forms shortly after seeing your post.
I moved to EON on Thursday 30th October, and was on the Next Drive tariff by Tuesday 4th November.
While I was on the interim tariff, I kept my battery charged at 80% using the Reserve % option. This keeps power available in case of a blackout, but the battery does not discharge below the 80% Reserve level, siting idle, but with a lot of power available if needed.
26Left And they’re done. SoLR of last resort to be appointed.
https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/press-release/ofgem-protects-customers-tomato-energy
I got out just in time, at the end of last month, as did my mum.
I’ve gone to So energy, my mother to Good energy.
Well done.
We jumped out just in time!! Me and @Iguana literally just days before collapse. 😃
Hmmmmmm, I've just logged in to Eon and it still states that "Switch to Next Drive in progress" - I'll drop them a question now and ask for a timeline!
I like your thought process around keeping battery @ 80%, we're in the sticks and do have the odd power cut, will get it charged tonight
Iguana I guess if you don’t push a bit, they will drag things out as long as possible. I didn’t wait around, I filed a verbal complaint on my very first day as a customer. I made it clear that I was unhappy with their two-week transition process and demanded to be switched to my target tariff immediately. The person on the phone confirmed that my smart meter was working, so there was no reason for a delay. They resolved the issue within a reasonable timeframe, and I am happy with the result.
Monday 👍
They had issues initially communicating with the meter, I'm chilled with that.
The main thing was to was jump ship from Tomato in time.
Let's just hope they don't want pictures of my EV 🤔
Iguana They didn't ask me anything about my PHEV. No reg, no documents or anything. 👍
Just had a text message from British gas telling me that they are taking over all the tomato energy customers!!
As usual no way to context them!!!!
A world of telephone pain coming up tomorrow I guess
Iguana Hahaha, I got the exact same text! British Gas are absolutely useless 😄 I actually just settled a claim with the Energy Ombudsman against them last week. They’re paying me £350 compensation for messing up my gas supply. And now this 😄 I’ll be calling E.ON to warn them about British Gas trying to poach me. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if they tried to switch me over without consent. I’ve already got a new contract, so British Gas can jog on.
On another forum it was reported that BG had received an out-of-date list of customers from Tomato.
As a guide I moved in June and haven't thankfully been emailed by them
Just when you thought you'd escaped Tomato's financial "incontinence" BG's incompetence will suck you back into a world of agentic AI "customer service" hell 🙁
Best of luck peeps 😃
Vestas British Gas is using call centres in South Africa now. No AI agents, apart from the first few minutes for authorisation and routing to the right team.
I’ve been on the phone with them probably 20 times over the past six months, trying to sort out gas billing issues of their own making. They now owe me £350 in compensation.
If they try to switch me back from EON without my consent, it will be another case for the Energy Ombudsman. I am not letting that slide 😁
That said, I have already called both EON and BG to warn them. EON cannot block a switch request, as that would count as anti-competitive behaviour or something, but the person I spoke to said he would personally keep an eye on my account and contact me if any switch request from BG comes through.
As for BG, they are as clueless as ever. The customer representative left a note on my previously closed gas account saying not to take over my electricity supply. We will see how effective that note turns out to be 😄

bRhFDKtjRMK9 I thought that if you owed a company money they could block the request? If so ask Eon to bill you for something.
Windy Miller Very interesting. But what should I ask them to bill me for? My Direct Debit payment was taken a few days ago at a high rate to cover the interim tariff, calculated as a flat rate without smart data, so my account is currently in credit. 🤔
I got through to them last night, I was informed that to ignore the text as they are sending to all
Today I received a welcome email from them 😫
Will also be contacting eon to pre warn them!
In other news I've now moved to their next drive tariff 👍
Iguana Congratulations on your final switch to Drive Next! How long did it take in total for you to be switched to a correct tariff?
I’ve also received a welcome email from BG. I’ll be calling them tomorrow to find out what their excuse is.
My meter’s diagnostic messages still show “EONNEXT”, my EON account balance and existing tariff values, so despite BG’s email saying they’ve been supplying my property since November 9th (really? 😆), I clearly haven’t been switched. What a mess.
Sorry for the long delay!
The original move to standard Eon was around two weeks, then this was followed by around another two weeks to move to Next Drive.
I've also now moved my SEG to Eon at 6p, not a perfect rate, but not many offers out there! This took around 6 weeks.
So I'm importing overnight at 7p and will export at 6p.
Not heard a thing again from British Gas since I emailed them and said very firmly NO!
Iguana Did you apply for Next Drive when porting or just normal Tarrif? If Next Drive, then it might be worth raising an official complaint on those two weeks they took to move you across to next drive, as you didn't sign up for standard rate to start with.
They are likely to throw a cash credit to resolve, cant hurt to try.
