Can my battery work during a power cut?

Hi - We've recently had several power cuts.
During these cuts the whole system goes off, is there a setting / way to draw power from the battery to feed the house?

Yes if your inverter supports it (GE hybrids usually do).
It is called Emergency Power Supply (EPS).

You will need a TT earth point for the EPS side.
Many houses don't have one so you might need one to be installed.

If you go ahead and have an EPS system installed, your GE setup will need to be recomissioned by your installer.

DavidChristie we got our installer to fit a manual switch over which has the function of isolating the battery and solar generation from the grid. This prevent any electricity from flowing back onto the grid during the power outage and provides protection for any of the lecky workers who are working on the public facing cables during the power cut. Our EPS then feeds our main consumer unit. And before we make the manual switch over we do have to ensure we don’t have more load demand in the house than our solar/battery can provide. Haven’t had to use it yet.

Mine just feeds into a double socket and then I'll use an extension to get to where needed, for the amount of use it will have I didn't see the point in spending all the extra to make it feed the consumer unit.
I've lived in this house 8 years and can count on 1 hand the number of power cuts, non of which have been lengthy.

Mine is the same. I have UPSes for stuff that must stay up during a power cut and if the outage is going to be a long one, I can run extension leads from the EPS socket to the critical appliances.

Just remember you must have a Ground rod installed, to use in a blackout / outage if your going to use your battery

No matter how it's been setup, (IE) to the consumer unit or vir plug / extension lead

lifco Yep. I was surprised at the length of the rod our installer fitted. It felt like they were trying to sink a rod to the centre of the earth 😂

Have you tested it to make sure it works properly? Surprises may come out if you don't.

Maxwell I believe they have to measure the resistance between the rod and an earthing point to be less than something like 100 ohms? I can't remember the value. All this dry weather has probably made the local soil act as an insulator, but deep down, it will be damp enough.

I've had power cuts and it's never been uninterrupted...I have an earth rod. Perplexed now...

Sorry I have Gen1 Hybrid with 9.5 battery and EPS set up for most of the house (not big loads like kitchen and immersion heater etc) and when grid goes off, we get circa 20s cut before EPS kicks in and house goes back to nearly normal.
We have an earth rod to provide earth when grid earth is lost during "islanding" operation
I am sorry but I dont know how AOI and Gateway work.

SteveCook I probably get a half a second cut before it takes over so it's not totally interrupted. The only thing that concerns me is the modem dropping and causing a DSLAM issue. May be totally arbitrary now but old habits die hard. Put the modem on a small 12v UPS to avoid this now. Shame my router is quite thirsty and don't have a UPS on that yet.

Yep. We have killed the mains incoming and switched over to the standalone mode. They had to make some alterations as the first time they tried it computer said no. I can’t remember what was wired the wrong way. It was the first one they had done.
