Had an email this morning! Looks like Octopus want to start moving the goalposts. Now going to be moving to a variable tariff. Initially at least, the export is remaining at 15p, but one wonders if maybe they're looking to reduce it over time, a little like the DFS sessions.
Anyone got any thoughts on it?
TimHutchings They've been moving customers to variable export for well over a year now.
Ultimately (probably well before 2030) the domestic export rates in the UK are going to drop to 5p or lower just like various other countries a bit further along the PV path. There are quite literally thousands of "solar farms" or BESS consented and awaiting dates to connect to the grid.....
Make the case for another battery to be added even stronger

Vestas Guess it depends on what the competitors like EON offer, though I imagine over a period, most will move in the same direction. I've enjoyed having a zero to a positive credit in my Octopus account for the last 3 years covering both gas and electric and standing charges.

Whilst price is around 2x cheap rate import I’ll export.
Around 11-12p I start to restrict export to about the hour before cheap rate kicks in.
After that I’ll fill battery, then car, then export.
If price drops enough I’d stick a hot water diverter in before export, which means essentially they would only in exceptional circumstances see export.
The fixed price ending was aired at the end of 2024 too.

It’s a shame though, as whilst the price can change once a year it’s predictable. When things get too complicated people tend to look elsewhere.
I had noticed IOG slots aligning to when we exported more, so we stopped plugging in until after dark. Financially each kWh we use rather than export costs us 8p.
After I switched from fixed rate to cosy Octopus still warned me when my fixed tariff was to due to end. This was because I could have reverted from Cosy.
