I got a new Motorola Android phone and transferred all my apps from my old phone. It said it would also transfer the data but it didn't.

The inverter app works but it only records data when it is running. The background process doesn't seem to work.

Is there any way to copy the data from the old phone, so I have the past data?

I restarted the phone after an Android update and now the background process seems to be running.

So the only remaining questions is how to transfer my old data?

Answer 1:

For many people, a new phone will be an opportunity to leave the old phone at home running the Inverter Monitor app continuously, and use the new phone just for ad-hoc checks. In which case there is no urgent need to transfer the data.

Until you get a new new phone, when you will want to transfer the data from the old old phone to the old new phone!

For the settings, the simplest answer is just to compare the settings screen on each phone, and set accordingly. There are cases where the setting may need to be different between the phones.

For the short term data (which is only 3 days), just wait for it to accumulate again.

For battery cell history, just allow it to rebuild over a few days by itself.

If you have the premium option, the controls are obtained from the inverter, so they will be automatic. DO NOT just transfer the schedule, otherwise both phones will be trying to make changes. If you want the schedule controlled by the new phone, disable the entries on the old phone as you set them up on the new one.

For the longer term data, select the calendar icon. Change the dropdown that says "Data Table" to "Export CSV" and press Export. Do this on BOTH phones so that the export file (called Inverter.csv) gets set up on both, even if the new one is empty. Note the location of the export file as the folder location may be different on a new device. Now transfer the csv file from the old device to the new one overwriting the file. [There are many ways to transfer a file; bluetooth, email attachment, usb cable to a computer, kde connect, etc.]. Change the dropdown to "Import CSV" and press import. The file is merged into any data on the new phone, so you won't lose any data.

This is just a general tip. Many new phones have an option to limit background processing enabled now. If the app stops after a while, go the the android settings / apps / Inverter / App battery usage / Allow background usage [press the heading not the toggle] and select Unrestricted.

I have set those options but the background app still stops for large chunks of the day. I can tell when it is running because I get the Gathering Statistics notification but it seems to stop and requires the app to be run to start it again.

nophead Does it keep running when plugged into a mains charger? (not a laptop; usb-c knows the difference).

I guess it's some kind of Motorola battery saver. I googled "motorola android turn off battery saver mode" and the AI said:

AI Overview
To turn off battery saver mode on your Motorola Android phone, swipe down from the top of your screen to open the quick settings panel and tap the Battery Saver icon. If the icon isn't on the main panel, you can tap and hold the Battery Saver icon to go to the Battery settings, or go to Settings > Battery to find the option and toggle it off.

The AI may be wrong or out of date. There are other answers and some youtube videos. Or plain old trial and error working through all the settings.

The battery save option was already turned off, but I also found a "Manage Background" apps and "Adaptive Battery", which were on, so I have turned those off as well to see if they fix the problem.

Changing those two setting seems to have fixed it. Amazing how hard it is to get something to run when you want it to and not be stopped by an OS that thinks it knows best. Unrestricted is not unrestricted at all.
