I got an email from a company called Powerdog what said I'm receiving it because I have "shown interest in home battery services". I ONLY use this email address for GivEnergy, so the only explanation I can think of for this is that GivEnergy has sold my personal details, or they have had an undisclosed data breach. Hope I'm wrong. Did anyone else get this email or know what it is about?

Well spotted, I can see in your link they are in the Stoke area like Givenergy so maybe a rebrand? They seem to be doing some similar things what Givenergy has available. If they are part of the same company that makes some sense how they may be allowed to transfer our details across without falling afoul of GDPR. Still though something about it doensnt sit right, there is a lot of personal info on Givenergy (like my home address and energy usage) that I don't want to just be spread about. I always use different email addresses for every service for this exact reason!

Shopify has many scam sites. It's a Canadian company, and you'd think they'd monitor/regulate it a bit better...
Also unsurprisingly non-compliant with UK law - no company name, no company registration number, no VAT number, no registered office address. All are mandatory for a commercial website for companies operating in the UK. Fines for all of that if reported.
Cowboy central as is normal - also using different names for different directorships (Jason Osler vs Jason Peter Osler) is illegal. Fines for this if reported
Transferring data from one company to another (which didn't exist at the time any contract was formed between consumer and GE) is likewise illegal. Fines from ICO if reported.
I doubt anyone who's dealt with Givenergy would be at all surprised with the level of "couldn't give a damn about regs" attitude Osler shows.

The dongle however is something I've not seen before.
Send them a DSAR. Ask for a copy of your data, and ask questions, where did they acquired it from. They have to reply within 30 days. If they fail to reply fully to your request, next step is a complaint to ICO, and small claims court to win compensation.
bRhFDKtjRMK9 You won't get anything on the small claims track other than nominal compo of about £35 - its been tried by experts* & you'll have a wait of at least 18 months anywhere in England. Can't see anyone doing that as the minimum court fee is £35.... 😉
Basically you have to prove you incurred costs (not losses, you'd need to go on the fast track for that) and that's pretty much impossible.
*An ISP (AAISP) tried it long ago, then again after GDPR came into effect to find out whether PECR had any impact on spammers (it doesn't) if you actually took them to court.
Vestas Not quite. Courts can award compensation for both financial loss and distress under UK GDPR / DPA 2018, and it isn’t capped at £35. It depends on the circumstances and whether a breach actually caused harm. The ICO also states people can take court action for compensation if their data rights are breached.
Sending a DSAR is still the sensible first step. It forces them to show what data they hold, where they got it from, and whether they’re processing it lawfully. If they don’t respond properly or within the time limit, that gives grounds to complain to the ICO and potentially pursue a claim, even if results vary case-by-case.
At the end of the day, if you choose to do nothing, you’ve already lost.
