I have 8.4kwp 9.5kW battery and Gen 2 3.6kW inverter and have been on Flux since buying above (apart from dabbling with OIF for a short period)
I have just bought an EV and thought I could get onto intelligent Go but can't (wrong car) so looking at Go tariff
What are the limitations re grid import during the cheap slot 12:30 / 5:30am?
I will be charging through a 7kW charger, filling up the battery and wanting to do the dishwasher and washing M/C during this period plus the rest of the house requirements
The battery takes the three hour cheap energy slot of flox to fill, I presume because of the limitations of the inverter.
Re EV charging and the rest of the house power requirement are they seperate from the inverter / battery charging?
The consumption for the house is around 10 / 12kWh so because of the 31.67p/day unit charge would it be worthwhile getting a second battery to be self sufficient?
The above might be basic questions but when you get to my age it becomes a little more difficult!

Octopus Go?
I'm not aware of any limits in that 5 hr cheap (currently 6.5p/kWh) slot other than your incoming cutout fuse.
I'd certainly take 9.5kW into the battery, 35kWh into the car and run the house during that time.
If you take 50kW/h in the 5 hrs and vertually nothing in the rest all well and good.
average 10kW/h, approx 42A draw. nicely inside any company fuse limits
seeeing as thagt would be £3.25 + Standing, I'm not sure spending £2500 on a second 9.5kW battery could be justified for maybe only 1kWh a day at 31p
Better to buy a different charger that works with iog but probably not worth it
Just FYI, EDF GoElectric is by far the best EV tariff as of today. 6.99p/kWh overnight, for 7 hours (two more hours than Octopus Go).
No compatible charger/car required, but you can use 'smart charging' (similar to Intelligent Go) with a compatible charger/car and get £60/year off if you want.

Volvo dealer is giving me a POD smart charger as part of the deal so until I speak to them I won't know what control the charger has over the charging (if that make sense)
I'll look into the EDF tariff, but I have been with Octopus for a long time and although I have had issues I have found their customer service quite goog to work with having said that I am not loyal!

Cully I have a Volvo EX30 and use a Zappi which is intergrated to Intelligent Octopus Go as the Volvo isn't. I believe the Ohme and Hypervolt chargers are also able to be intergrated to IOG, but currently, the Pod Point isn't. The Zappi and Hypervolt are also able to use surplus solar to charge the car, but currently with the Intelligent Octopus Go and Octopus Go tariffs, you're better off exporting surplus solar at 12p and importing your cheap rate energy to fill your solar battery and car.
If at a later date, the export rate drops and the cheap import rate is more than the export rate, then using surplus solar could be very useful.

What about the charger? My car is supported but they cannot talk to it so connect to the charger. Is your charger compatible with IOG?
The pod point charger isn't compable.
Does this idea work, get the above charger installed and running (don't forget its free from Volvo) and later swap the charger to a Zappi to try out your way of getting OIG
I would initially have to use OG but would tariff change later
Is the electrical installation of different chargers the same? thinking that a charger can be swapped for a different charger without much change from the origional install?
There are other members of thew family getting into the EV mode so the POD charger would have a home to go to!
Cully Are you particularly tied to Octopus? I think one of the other providers (EDF ?) do support smart charging via (one model of) podpoint.

Cully I have had an EV for sometime now and started off with a Podpoint charger with no real problems. Three years ago I had solar plus 9.5kw battery. I found that when I charged the car overnight, at cheaper rate, the battery and the grid shared the load equally i.e. battery 3.5 kw grid 3.5kw.Battery got discharged quickly. At that time PP were unable to stop the battery discharging. I took the bull by the horns and got a Givenergy charger fitted at a cost. I have a gen3 inverter and are now able to stop the battery being discharged during EV charging.
I use octopus go and outgoing octopus. I am not happy with intelligent as the car has to be connected to the charger at all times to benefit from the cheaper charging times dictated by octopus.
I would imagine that you do not charge your car every night, so what I do is run appliances /battery charge during the cheaper rate and when I want to charge the car, I charge it for 3hours and the appliances etc for the remaining time. this is for peace of mind rather than anything else.
As an aside I do not use the solar panel output to charge the car so long as the export rate is higher than the cheaper overnight rate.
Anyone else has noticed that Octopus have upped the standing charge?
arthurma I have used iog for several years now originally via the car (Tesla) but currently via a Hypervolt 3 which is better. I don’t have to keep it plugged in and Octopus don’t dictate when I charge. The house 9.5 charges every night between 2330&0530 at the now 5.2p rate with everything load shifted to run in the cheap period. So we use little peak rate despite the heat pump.
Ask the Volvo dealer for the cash equivalent of the Pod charger and use it to pay for some of the Zappi or Hypervolt
Cully TBH I deliberately went for a compatible charger (the car was a bit of a bonus) because I didn't want to be tied into a next car purchase being dictated by what Octopus would support.
The only challenge I had was as the car was recognised the system would try and talk to the car (which it couldn't for some reason) so I had to find a somewhat compatible battery sized car that was not on the list and then Octopus would talk to the charger.
As for cabling, I am not an electrician, but I would have through the electrical cabling would still be fine - you might need to wire in a CT clamp (or something) for the zappi to monitor the draw to ensure not too much is pulled at any one time.
The other advantage with the zappi is that you can then at a later date get an eddi installed to heat your hot water - assuming you are still on gas and have a tank! My plan is once export prices drop significantly I will reduce the excess generation setting on the zappi and ensure the car and/or hot water are powered by excess solar.
As for using the zappi, I just plug the thing in on the day when I need a top up. Typically IOG charges overnight, but I did have a charge during the day recently. I then also have my battery set to re-charge overnight during the cheap period (11:30 - 05:30) setting the charge rate low enough that the battery could charge from empty over the 6 hours.
SimonClarke HI Simon.I would guess you do not use the daytime bursts of charge that Octopus use. Put do Octopus intelligent Go dictate when they will charge at the cheaper rate during the day into your phone.
arthurma if I left the car plugged in I guess it would get more cheaper offers ( dictates makes it sound like you have to do it which you don’t). Often plug in when we get home and frequently it has finished charging the car before 2330 so cheap evening juice which doesn’t hurt in the winter when the heat pump is using a bit, which means it ends up being cheap from 1900ish to 0530 for everything bar the car. I have occasionally left the car plugged in for a couple of days but not received any extra slots as it’s already full
Just done some quick maths re cost of fuel / mth used on current XC60 2ltr petrol Volvo with 18,800 miles done over 32 months (approx 600 miles / mth) and taken an average fuel cost of 135p/ltr and at 35 MPG get £103 / month
Equating this to power demand of the EV which has a 26.4kWh / 100 miles
At 600 miles / mth about 5kkWh / day is required
As mentioned earlier I need say 12 kWh consumption for the house, I have a usable 9kWh battery and with the 8.4kWp array during summer months I should be able to accommodate the power requirement for the car if I can plan the charging to suit the flux tariff over the summer months
The car is always in the garage between 6PM and 9AM so some sort of programmable charger is required then I get battery charging as well as Flux rates.
What do yo think?
PS my maths is as goog as it gets if anomolies are found
