Giv-Gateway & Gateway-2

We have Giv-Gateway and AIO commissioned in July 2024.
I note the "data sheets" available on the GE website for the device Giv-Gateway states this:

"20ms Switchover Time In the event of a grid failure, the system will continue to provide power into the home. This allows operation off-grid until grid supply is restored."

But for Gateway-2 it states:

" Instant Switchover Time In the event of a grid failure, the system will continue to provide power into the home. This allows operation off-grid until grid supply is restored."

Our equipment was supplied on the promise of "instant" - but now I learn it's 20ms. That's simply not good enough to keep the clocks running. We have experienced brown outs. I've had to buy a number of small UPS for around the house - which seems ridiculous since I've got a 13Kw battery can power the whole house.

Does Gateway-2 really provide "instant", seamless, UPS functionality?

What is people's experience here?

And significantly - do I have any options to upgrade?

You are presumably aware that GivEnergy is now in Administration?

I don't know if you've got much option to upgrade, unless you find someone with one that they want to offload, but I can confirm that in both the test and the one power cut we've had since it went live, our G2 has been instant enough that none of our devices noticed.

Julian Gray 20ms is one cycle of voltage at 50Hz. You're not going to get better than that.

AIO and Gateway.
We've had several power cuts over the last couple of years since installation; we only realised when neighbours' lights went out.
No interruption.

I have Gateway V1 and 2 AIO's. I have email servers and the like running 24/7 with no issues when the power fails or I do a test in the Gateway by turning the grid power off.

mikes01666 I only get this if there is capacity in the battery to take excess solar (SoC approx80% max), or at night time where no to little solar. In which case the system "drops" for about 30 seconds whilst the hybrid inverter is switched off, then everything comes back online.

What do you experiance when the battery is near full and lots of solar being generated? Do you get the 20ms cut-over?

I don't know as I don't monitor ot and didn't notice any flickering or dropouts.
It was during the day and the battery was charged to 100% overnight (IOG) so it must have been nearly full with the amouny of solar these days.
Sorry I can't be of more help. It just worked which must be the highest compliment of tech.

mikes01666 That's excellent - that is how technology should be, just working quietly in the background. Just out of interest then, what inverter do you have (hybrid/string and manufacturer)?

Givenergy AIO1 and Gateway. Solaredge PV inverter. Fitted by OVO (subcontracted to Infinity Renewables).

Gateway 2 is incompatible with AIOv1 or Gateway V1 so you'd be having to rip the lot out if you wanted to change it.

mikes01666 that is interesting - I have the GE hybrid invertor and (apparently) it can't react fast enough to shutting/ramping down output so the system goes off-line. Maybe I'll look at a different inverter when this one goes

duplada As per my other posts here, what inverter do you have with your set-up?

I have a SMA Sunny Boy 4000TL from 2011 controlling the solar panels and Dual AIO's and Gateway installed in 2025

duplada So at least 2 others with AIO and gateway with no problems during powercut on sunny day with full AIO but with a non GE inverter, hmmm. I think I'll do a little experiment and take the AIO off grid when battery is full and therer is some sunshine (so a 1-2kw generated) and see what happens. I'm trying to see if it is my confguration, whether it is actually the GE hybrid or solar output. More testing required

CW I also have a non-GE solar inverter, fwiw.

adskankster Thanks that's good to know - is your's a Gateway2 or the original? Do you still get the 20ms cut-over with a full battery and plenty of solar being generated ?

CW It's a G2 and in both the commissioning test and the one power cut we've had, none of our devices noticed, as far as I can tell. So it was essentially instantaneous. They were both in April, and our solar is NW roof, so amounts weren't high, but the panels were generating.

So I have just tried taking the Gateway of-grid. AIO Battery at 98% and about 1.5kW being produced from the solar. System cut-over instantly! Maybe what I occasionally experiance is due to the amount of power - but at least I am seeing the same behaviour as others on a cloudy day

Ours isn't working... if anyone has documentation beyond what's on the Givenergy downloads please do link to it.
We have 2 non-Givenergy (Solis) inverters connected together, gateway v1 - installed in Oct - starts to kick in then cuts out, and keeps repeating that loop. It was an outstanding fault with Givenergy but they are now in receivership :-(
I think there much be some config setting we have wrong, or (another) screwup from our installer.
Honestly gateway issues have been a PITA.
We have a lot of power cuts in this area, not once has it worked.

Sun is beating down on the gateway despite the canopy we fitted - the weird angle of light around the buildings have sun hitting it from 4pm to dusk.
