Hi all,

My GW2 has been "offline" and "Lost" since 13th, but seems to be controlling things okay and reporting stuff to the portal/App since then (so it's only local connection that seems to have gone), now wants to do a firmware upgrade from A0.003 to A0.005. This surprised me somewhat, when I saw it.

Anyway, I've noticed some people have had some fun and games with this, on other gateway models, relatively recently, but I wondered if the upgrade process is generally okay, and if it's worth risking going through the process. I'm hoping it, or the restart process, will fix the connection problem. I could restart anyway, but if I'm going to, I might as well upgrade.

I know not many here have an AIO2, but if anyone does, and have either done this, or are running on A0.005 okay, it would be reassuring to hear.

adskankster personally I would NOT upgrade ANY firmware unless the firmware fixed a problem that I was definitely having and I needed the fix.

Whilst others may report that their firmware upgrade works fine, that is not 100% guaranteed, and since there is no GivEnergy Support any more you could be facing a dead device if the firmware fails.

In the iconic words, “Do you feel lucky, punk?“

geoffreycoan This was my worry, but I was wondering if the upgrade could fix the offline while not offline error. I may try a restart on its own to start with.

The first post in this thread looks the same as my situation, though the portal is getting PV data that, locally, I could only see through the gateway (on HA).

https://community-beta.givenergy.cloud/t/gateway-2-network-connected-to-the-home-wifi-network-and-has-access-to-the-internet-but-not-visible-on-the-givenergy-portal/5060

It looks like a restart didn't fix it, so I'll probably contact the installers and see if they can try and reconnect it using the commissioning application. I'll leave the firmware and see what they say at the same time.

I’m a firm believer in ‘latest’ firmware, I would just recommend putting GW into Bypass mode for the update so there is no interruption to house mains supply, then change back afterwards.

treborUK My view now would be update deliberately, not automatically.

I have issues with my battery still, and if firmware was offered to fix it Id probably take a gamble - but if your battery is doing everything its meant to do and working well why take the risk?

Last update was the only one I waited for general feedback with support being next to none existent - now it is for sure none existent - oh and the update didnt solve the issue.

Not when the company who created the firmware no longer exists. "Latest" f/w is just the one with more unknown bugs once that happens.

DreadorUK I know you were making a general point, but just to clarify, it's the gateway, and it's not operating as it should. The other known case that pretty much exactly matches, is on the same firmware - though I don't know if the new firmware would fix it. I can't find the changelog (it doesn't seem to be at the GE firmware changelog page).
I'll see if the installer can reconnect it, and if so, see it if reoccurs. If it does reoccur, I might have a clearer picture on the state of that firmware.

I once had a situation with my Gateway V1 where it wouldn't communicate and had crashed. The only way to fix it was to power down all connected devices, Solar, AIO's at the devices and isolate, then switch off in the Gateway the same. When that was complete the power to the house (and Gateway) was switched off in the meter cupboard and back on 30 seconds later. The start up procedure was the reverse of shutdown steps you had just taken. This fixed my Gateway errors.

Note that this is not the same as killing the Grid power breaker in the Gateway V1 as the Gateway itself remains energised throughout. The only way to reboot the Gateway is to kill power to the property that is powering it.

I have no idea if this will cure your issue, but it is worth a try, and is less risky than a firmware upgrade.

The only person (I am guessing) who will know what is in the change log files, that are two versions up from yours in your Gateway V2, is Paul Landregan (Head of everything Technical at GE) he from time to time answers questions on the GE Facebook group. You could be lucky if you ask a question there.
