At 12:55 today my home automation software stopped reading valid data from the GiveEnergy API with an 'unauthenticated' error (it has been working solidly for months). My API key had been deleted from the portal. When I generated a new one it was a different length and now all is well again.

Did I miss the memo on this change?

Same thing happened to me today too, it certainly wasn't announced.

same here, portal says key still exists but getting unathenticated / unauthorized error on api calls

locked the portal said my key existed but only showed an empty box. New shorter key suggests suggests an unadvertised change to the authentication protocol. Sigh!

Curious about how many people this has affected...

Hi All,

Due an issue that arose yesterday with our file management software we had to regenerate our encryption keys which unfortunately had the knock-on effect of clearing all sessions on the web portal, app and invalidating all generated API keys. We weren't aware of this side-effect until checking the forums this morning. Because of this, any users that generated an API key will need to regenerate their key to continue using the API.

We'll be sending out a mass email today to all users that have generated keys to explain what's happened.

Ah, that explains it - I wondered why my process that picks up the Battery % charge for the in-home display had stopped working. Well, easy fix at any rate, it happens.

Sam D (GivEnergy) Hi Sam, I got this email but everything seems to be working fine. Should I still re-generate key?? Adrian Smale

AdrianSmale you only need the key if you use your own software to call the givenergy service (and home spun automation). If you do, you will need a new key, the old keys no longer work to authenticate the API calls.

If just using the givenergy app or/and portal, the manually generated API key isn't relevant.

You’ll need to renew it if you use the Octopus Scheduler or their R&D app (which won’t be many people, most likely if your using it to hand over Agile control to Octopus from their end as opposed to the other one Givenergy run on their portal. )
