when a battery is fully charged and there is consumption over and above the solar generation, will the excess consumption be pulled off the battery automatically or is it a parameter I need change in the portal?

As long as you have ANY charge in the battery, then yes the battery should supply your demand, for anything over and above what the solar is generating. All assuming you are on the Eco setting, without any other settings enabled (or external control systems).
