What about exporting excess electricity?

Very much thank you to Simon S for setting up the new General page I use to monitor the system here.

In the summer, I export all excess energy that I don't use and is generated through the day. In the winter it seems that I may be able to do this and more as well - thanks to Simon S' changes and cheap recharges over-night when needed.

If I go to the Settings > Timed Export tab on the screen, I can enter two timed exports that can happen in any one 24hr period.

As I know that most energy is used in a domestic environment between 5AM and 8AM. and also between 6PM and 10PM, I wonder if I can export any excess enenery held in the batteries I have here as well?

I won't bore you all with the set-up I have here as it is explained elsewhere. I also see no point in hoarding excess energy that will never be used. It is better to send that energy to others who may need it, I feel.

Has anybody else had experience of this please?

Geoff-Bell you can force discharge to grid as much excess as you've got. I.e spare PV and discharge batteries at full rate.
The economics of this may not be so good depending on your SEG rate. If your just doing it for the good of the grid then fair enough but at this time of year you'll most likely not be adding much to the battery with PV & be charging up overnight at 5p before handing it back at similar or less than the import cost.
You'll also be adding on more battery cycles.

What I keep mulling over (which would need a lot of co-operation from Octopus/grid/GE) is the ability to set up a local energy auctions - sell to your neighbours, netted off by each others smart meters (less everyone's/DNOs cut.)
This would require suitable buy in from DNOs & Suppliers to charge realistic fees but given you can narrow this to local 240V/415V supplies and not use the wider HV network I'm sure there is room here to negotiate.
(Given Greg at Octopus has already said that the SEG payment is more of a hinderence/cost rather than a profit maker, they may actually be more ameable to this than it first sounds)

It's also another tool in the box for demand side response to enable our transition to net zero at a community level.

As time moves on GEs popularity should lead to a fairly substantial distributed battery network. It would be nice to utilise that in a more joined up way.

That's my thoughts anyway.

I am usually export positive from March till September time depending on solar production.
I was on Octopus Agile for import/export with the variable rate, relative to wholesale.
I exported at an average rate of 11p/kwh over this period, so it can be worthwhile.
I used the Octopus Intergration for automating the export at the peak time/prices.You could select how long you wanted to export for during a given time period and it worked quite well.
Obviously the pricing structure has changed during the recent turmoil, but I will be looking into this again towards March onwards.

hoggy on that subject, I recently came across something like that SP Energy were offering. I'm not too sure if it was more than one operator offering via the same interface I came across. Basically it would allow you to auction off a guaranteed amount you would feed to the grid at certain times. The auction times I noted were in the order of 18 months away and map based. The bid rates were only in the order of 4p/kWh so I assume this is more for larger producers to be able to sell their wares as it were. You had to stipulate how much you would export / feed to the grid for each time slot. I assume that once registered and the necessary monitoring tools set up then a business model could work but only for large scale I would assume. I can't remember exactly where I seen this. We may fiond that if this is on the Macro scale, octopus and other suppliers could offer this at a micro scale direct to customers via something similar to the V2G trials.

Salibaba was it PicloFlex ? That sounds like that sort of thing - a bit too rigid for local supply really.

Was thinking more along the lines of peer2peer such that I turn my oven on and then the "Energy broker" has 3 choices - self supply (always cheapest but may not have enough to cover load) > auto bid for supply import from local user (potentially lower cost than grid) > grid (highest cost)

I think this is the theory for powerledger.io but it needs a lot more buy in from suppliers to make it work to get around the fact that everything runs through the meter whatever you do.
