Battery Idle when it has decent amount of charge

I've had my 5.2 battery just under a week and overall it's working well but noticed a couple of oddities/niggles
1) Yesterday we had heavily overcast day so the solar was struggling to get above 300W, and the battery at lunchtime had 56% charge. So when I put the hob on to cook my lunch I expected the battery to kick in and help. Nope. I had 2 rings on which would generally draw about 1.5kw and only about 150W demand from computer etc. My smart meter display was showing import of over 1kW which lasted the entirety of the time the cooker was on which was about 15 mins in the end. The display on the app showed the battery as "Idle"
Strangely though when I'd finished my lunch and put the kettle on to make a brew some 20 mins later the battery then decided to kick in. It seems to have a mind of it's own. My question is this expected or is there a way I can give it a poke to force it into life?
2) The other oddity is overnight the house runs on the battery and that's fine. But when the solar is just starting to generate the following day an excess of 100-150W over the house demand the app and my smart energy display are showing that as export even though the battery is below 50% and I kind of expected it to favour charging the battery. However, when the excess of solar hits slightly higher level, say 300-350W it "remembers" the battery and starts charging.
The system is set to ECO and I've not really fiddled with any of the settings.
Overall I've been very pleased with it as I only imported about 0.2kwH so it's not the end of the world. I'm more curious as it seems that there is a threshold over when it switches between charge/discjharge/export/import if that makes sense.

The portal displays snapshots of data at a point in time with updates every 5 minutes, so if you want to know what's happening right now, it's not much use. The app updates every 10 seconds or so (in local mode) and is much better at seeing dynamic load changes. I'm not sure how often your smart meter In Home Display updates, but I would expect it to be no more than every few seconds.

However, if you've observed the smart meter showing 1kW load for the entire 15 minute cooking period, I would expect an import of 0.25kWh, just for that consumption. Therefore, if your import for the day was 0.2kWh (from your smart meter?), then I think the battery and inverter is responding. The anecdotal evidence is that it takes maybe 15-20 seconds for an inverter to ramp up from nothing to meet the demand of a kettle, so just a few seconds.

Keep an eye on your smart meter registered import/export and compare it to the portal. You're likely to notice a fair difference (15-30%). If you're budgeting for energy bills, always use the smart meter as (whether it's right or wrong) it's what is used to calculate your bill.

Interesting. Thanks for coming back. Last couple of days it's been working well. Had really good gen yesterday and every time yesterday it picked up after about 15-20s like you said. It was just odd on Tuesday the battery stayed resolutely idle despite their being significant demand that the solar couldn't handle on its own.

I've been checking stuff on the Hugo app as well which shows a day in arrear what the smart meter has been collecting. I treat that as gospel as that is what I will get billed on. I'd noticed that the app does seem to understate the amount of import compared to what Hugo/Smart meter says as well which again seems strange to me. Not a biggie, and I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.
