Noisy Giv-AC 3.0 Inverter

Hi all. My inverter & battery was installed late September. It's all worked well, but recently the Inverter has started emitting a loud whine whenever the battery is discharging. Slight feeling that it's getting louder. Anyone else experienced anything similar? Is this a sign that something is about to fail?

The equipment is outside and we can easily hear the noise through the wall. The noise isn't too much of an issue at the moment, but the equipment is near a fence with a neighbour's small garden - again not too much of an issue at the moment but I can imagine them having a bit of a moan when the weather is a bit better and they want to sit outside.

andyparrott Doesn't sound good. Give them a call tomorrow, or web chat and ask them to look at it. If you can hear anything from the PV panels, inverter, battery or any switches, there's likely something wrong.

Shouldnt make a sound. At full load mine is the faintest of hum, unless you stick your ear next to it. The fan on it is louder (Self modified)

An update.

I contacted Givenergy via webchat and uploaded a video of the inverter with sound. They told me to contact my installer as they thought the connections between battery and inverter might be the issue. They also told me to turn the inverter and battery off to prevent damage.

The installer turned up today and took the top off the inverter and said a component looked as if it had burnt out. Sent off photos to givenergy.

He also rerouted the lighting circuits we had on the inverter EPS as when I turned off the inverter those stopped working- something the EPS documentation doesn’t warn you about. Just as well we didn’t have the power for the gas central heating on it. It seems odd that the EPS supply will survive a power cut but not an inverter failure!

Now waiting for a replacement inverter.

andyparrott Sounds like you made a good catch there. You've recognised something was amiss and your installer is handling the resolution.

Not sure how quickly it’s going to get resolved. The engineer wasn’t too hopeful that givenergy will replace the inverter quickly. He said they were very busy.

I’ll be calling them Monday to get an update.

Apparently givenergy charge the original installers for a givenergy engineer visit and then give them a refund if it’s an equipment fault. I worked in the IT business for 40 years and don’t recall a support model like that.
