The power to the house will be cut off just after Christmas for smart meter installation, any recommendations for the GE system to protect it whilst this happens or should it just cope with it?

Gust It should just cope with it. It's designed to automatically disconnect from the grid-tied consumer unit in the event of loss of grid. You should tell the smart meter installer that there is microgeneration at the premises so they can isolate their point of work from any potential energy supply (ie switch off the isolator at your consumer unit as well as removing the DNO fuse). They may install an isolator between the smart meter and the consumer unit which will be useful as it enables work to be carried out within the consumer unit with an isolation point further back (doesn't remove the hazard from the PV system but that can be isolated adjacent to the inverter).
If you have any EPS circuits, it will be a good test to see how they respond given a "grid failure". If you have a changeover switch to energise your consumer unit from EPS, your smart meter installer would be grateful to hear all about it to protect themselves from harm.
Tim makes a good point about testing the EPS (assuming you have EPS sockets fitted), as this simulates what would happen in a real power cut.

It is worth asking the installer to do this, as sometimes they only do if you ask. It makes it a lot easier if there is any future electrical work, as it avoids the need for the main fuse to be pulled.
