Have You Recently Switched to Octopus Economy 7?

If so, I would recommend that you check your first bill, as they currently seem to have an issue which results in too many units being charged at the Day (expensive) rate. I have already seen posts from several other people on here, who have suffered very similar experiences.

Specifically, on my first Economy 7 bill (and only my first bill) they had the correct total number of units for the electricity used, but they had most of them shown against the Day rate, when it should only have been about 5% of the units, with c.95% on the Night rate.

It has taken me almost 2 months of repeatedly calling them, to finally get someone who accepts the issue exists, and actually does something to rectify it.

If you do find yourself in this position, I suggest you download your usage data for the billed period, from the Octopus web site (it comes as an Excel file) and then highlight the timeslots which should be at the Day and Night rates, plus the totals. Then send this with a a picture of the relevant bill, to the following two e-mail addresses, and make it clear that you are making a complaint (this is important if you subsequently need to raise the issue with the regulator Ofgem):

issueresolution@octopus.energy
greg@octopus.energy (CEO's office)

I finally got a call from Alex (Roberts??) at Octopus, who refunded the overcharge as well as giving us a goodwill gesture for all of the hassle.

I fully appreciate that Octopus has just taken on a million Bulb customers, but that does not really excuse over-charging customers - particularly in this current energy climate. Even Alex accepted that they have quite a lot of work to do, to re-build their dented customer satisfaction levels.

If you are changing to ECO 7 from a standard rate I strongly urge you to take a meter reading as soon as you get the e-mail notification you have changed over.. Learn how to find your peak and off peak registers on the meter. Then either boil the kettle a few times, or do a small charge to the battery in your off peak slot, and look at both register to make sure it has recorded in the right one. If it is showing on the standard rate register then GET ON THE PHONE to them STRAIGHTAWAY (better than e-mailing).
The change to ECO 7 involves several departments and it seems common that one gets missed out and the message saying you have changed over is sent before all the work is complete! I know you shouldn't have to do this, and you will get your money back, but it better to get it sorted out straight away, rather than having a heart attack when the bill comes in!
