There have been some owners seeing what appears to be generation capping when using some JA panels. This discussion has been had on FB and in the Beta thread, but in an effort to help discuss just it and it not get lost in other chat, there is now this thread for it.

If you have JA panels, and have seen a generation curve on a good clear day like you can see in either of the images below please feel free to contribute. In an effort to help Paul, please post your setup in a standardised format with all of the details you can, if you have them.

What I am in particular looking for is the Solar PV power per string is over 3750W or 2700W (5kw 3.6Kw Inverter)
If your total is split over 2 strings, unlikely to be affected.
So this is mostly a single string, all your 10+ panels on one string, which is within spec, but being capped at some value below full, you will see a flat top.
To further muddy the waters, this can happen if the AC side is saturated (Full battery) so only really want data if you are seeing capped PV and not limited AC Out

Noted Issues: Generation reaches a ceiling of around 3.8kW despite no shading and clear conditions. On previous firmware it would reach a ceiling of around 2.7kW. No issues with panels when used with Gen1 inverter.

Clear day on latest beta (D0.996-A0.908/4073) (maxed out at around 3.8kW):

Noted Issues: Always seems to be when battery has reached 100% (but that could be a red herring) and strong sunlight.
Can't find evidence of the oscillation on the original FW (3009), prior to beginning of April this year but install was at end of Sept last year and the system never really got to experience the sunlight that we are now receiving.

alfwro Alfwro, exactly like that. Could you update the post with details on panel direction and how many panels are on that string? I'm assuming String 2 is unused.

In these graphs, we are only interested if the AC is not the issue, ie, you are hitting the AC power limit of 3.6 or 5kw. which will make the throttle. Usually this is when the battery is full, and the DC has no where to go but Export

No shading at all this time of the year. Looks like that could be the issue with reaching the limit as @TheDragon (GivEnergy) has also suggested.

Hi.

This is a screenshot from Thu 20 Apr when we had a lovely sunny day most of the day. Something is clearly throttling me back to about 3.8kW during sustained production. On bad weather days, I can get spikes to higher figures, but only briefly when the sun comes back out from behind a cloud, then I am throttled again. The current seems to be throttled back to approx 9A.
My panels are rated up to 12.9A, which I have seen during the spikes I mentioned above.
The other thing I've noticed about these panels is that although their spec sheet gives a Vmp of 31.01v, which would mean my 13 panels can do 403v total, I've seen much higher values of up to approx 455v. The Voc for these panels is 37.07v which would mean a max of 481v, so I'm not exceeding that.

I found this helpful page on the internet that explains the difference between inverter clipping and inverter throttling. https://www.solarquotes.com.au/blog/inverter-clipping-throttling-mb2718/ My chart looks like inverter throttling, which is why I am using that term to explain the issue.

OK, Here are my thoughts, and thoughts they are only.

HY3.6
3600W AC, DC side can be 1.5x greater, total 5400W DC
If this was even over 2 strings you get 2700W

HY5
5000 x 1.5 gives you 7500W Max DC Power
Even split 3750W

The max current is not only the limiting factor, I think there is a total PV power at play.
Even though the unit can do more, why is it being limited like this. I will for sure find out!!!!
Going into battle now, as if the MPPT macx current is stated as 13A, then why cant all 13A of it be on one string

Do not quote me on this, but thinking while on the loo, it is making sense this is whats going on

TheDragon (GivEnergy), we really need clarification of the string capabilities, certainly of the Gen2 hybrid inverters, as the historical data sheets have contained conflicting information depending on when they were published.

Is there any differentiation based on manufacturing date, or are they all the same hardware with differences set by firmware?

TheDragon (GivEnergy) This makes a huge amount of sense – When I went onto the beta Paul Landregan said "May I ask why you had a Gen2 5kW Hybrid crippled as a 3.6? Its now correctly set as a 5kW". This was news to me as it was supposed to be 5kW from day one but it would explain why I was seeing the ceiling at 2.7kW before I got the beta and 3.8kW after I got it, and it had nothing to do with the beta itself.

This would be quite conflicting with the spec sheet which says max of 7500kWp per string when it would appear to perhaps mean split between as you have noted. However, this doesn't explain why only JA panels have noticed it thus far.

TheDragon (GivEnergy) Great to hear. Have you managed to look at the data from @pelowj 's G1 inverter S2229G096 to see what you can see? He can no longer access the data for that inverter but I figured you probably can.

From what you've said thus far it would suggest that tomorrow if the weather holds I won't see the issue as I only have 3160 kWp on each string.

Is this in any way related to the somewhat unique bug I had ages ago (unique as in only about 2 people seemed to have it)
Where priority of loads was being given to the battery and not the PV - basically on pulling a load it dropped string 2 down and then used the battery to fill in the difference rather than just using the PV?
This did however require you to pull a load far bigger than the inverter but given I have no idea what codebase you FW guys are starting from it may have slipped through the cracks?

I am on JA panels as well although they are 340W older ones.

I have a gen 1 5kw hybrid , with 16 JASolar 410 w panels on an east west split , and a 8.2kwh battery , no issues what so ever, it works fine no clipping or drops in production even on the sunniest day of the year about a week ago when it generated 36kwh in a day.

On a day where I had held back the battery charging to avoid AC clipping:

So battery charging, PV exceeding 5kW, String 2 South hits 3.8kW and stays there as west string ramps up through the day.

Any way to graph on portal where its not overlaying 3 slightly different versions of yellow ! And currents .

jqworle At those powers then its likely not getting to the 3750 mark and so not a visible problem. 350w is easy to lose in the UK without even thinking about the angle of the panels.

justpassing Interesting. We have exactly the same panels - 12 on the west and 12 on the east. No shading. We currently have a gen 1 5kw hybrid inverter but "imminently" getting a gen 2 - installer delays notwithstanding. We don't see any plateauing other than when the batteries (2 x 9.5kwh) are full. We see classic generation curves with up to 5kw per string and 7.7kw peak combined as the sun passes to the south. The generation there would appear to match the expected 2.6 battery charging from the gen 1 plus 5kw other usage. Well at least I think that's how it works!

When the batteries are full, we see plateauing just over 5kw. I think this may be export limit related but I'm still trying to understand it to be fair.

Not sure if that's any help but if it is I can try to find some illustrative curves. Would look like a gen 2 issue?

It does appear to be, yes.

Yeah it's probably just barely possible, but it would be hard to see often if at all. Others have 5 or 6kwp on one string and so it is far more obvious.

Just catching up with this new thread. Not sure if my set-up might help, I have Gen2 5kw Hyb Inv with single 9.5kwh battery and 15Jinko 420w panels, split 10420=4200 on string 1 and 5*420=2100 on string 2 giving 6300w.
I am on D0.996-A0.908 inv FW and 4074 battery FW.
I have looked back and found the following showing example showing what is possible in terms of generation when the battery is charging...
Then this example when battery is full...

This second example shows the production clipping both when no export between 12:00 and 15:00 and then clipping further due to export after 15:00.
Let me know if this helps and I'll try and get more evidence today as good generation expected.

Considering the gen2 3.6 kw inverter is just a software downgraded gen2 5kw inverter then surely the same logic should be applied to the 3.6 i.e. it should be able to output 5kw so long as the export of 3.6kw is not exceeded. At present everything appears to be capped at 3.6kw stopping excess solar going above this value. The EPS system is marketed as being capable of delivering 5kw when excess solar is present, so why can't this same logic be applied to the rest of the home consumption?

Some people have suggested that the capping occurs when the battery is full, so I have re-done my chart to show that wasn't the case in my instance.

Glad a cause has been identified and hope its an easy solve as otherwise you could have a bunch of unhappy people with 4kw+ on a single string.

I would note that in my 19 years as a Transmission Controller broadcasting live news and sport, I was VERY good at breaking all the new kit I was given to test! I'm a little surprised that this oddity either wasn't noticed during testing, a value has been changed in the firmware since that testing was concluded, or there has been an unexpected hardware change since that testing was done.

While the clouds came over at an inopportune time, I can happily report that I did see sustained periods over the initially suspected cap further reinforcing the conclusion you have already come to. At one point my string was even up at 13A which was a pleasant surprise as it meant that the inverter felt I was getting 3193 off of 3160w worth of East facing panels at 11:30 this morning. (forgive me, its my first half decent day since the install lol)

EDIT: It appears you may have a fix out in the wild. Great news.

Without wishing to step on any toes, this seems an odd way to go about getting Miffy onto the new FW to help validate it for yourself, given that at times its taken over a week for me to get a reply to an email to support and will someone on the telephone just take Miffys word that they needs 995 given the beta is also closed to new entrants (at a guess at your own instruction).

I have this issue. Maximum PV output flattens out at 2.7-2.8kW. That is from a single string of 10x405W panels. System installed in December last year. I did check records for Jan, Feb and March sunny days, output flats out just below 2.8kW, 8.4A, 320V. Occasional peak over 8.5A happen, but very rarely.

Issue is, if something goes wrong and support desk dont have it logged, getting an engineer out to replace anything is harder.
I raised the ticket myself, as I needed this on test.

NOW NEED SOME SUN. SOMEWHERE.

TheDragon (GivEnergy) I'm seeing sustained generation >4.3kW, so on first inspection this seems fixed. Anecdotally I seem to also be seeing a much less jagged graph compared to other days with similar cloud cover.

Weirdly I've also seen >5kW for a minute or so – it's a 4.92kWp array so I'm a bit confused about that.

pelowj, with passing clouds your solar panels receive solar energy from more than 1 direction. The bulk is direct line of sight from the sun, but in addition for brief periods there will be solar energy reflected by the surrounding clouds on to the panels as well. It all adds up.

This is why you can see short periods with generation above what you think is the peak output value.

At the end of the day if the spec sheet ways 13a and it was paired with 13a panels then a typo has cost you generation.

So it's hard to have definitive proof the s/w update has fixed my capping issue.
At least I fixed my Solcast issue and it appears to be working now. Note: in the picture below, Paul rolled out the new s/w to me on 26 Apr. The capping is blantantly obvious on the previous day!

dbt85 If thats the case, it was not correct. Gen 1 is 11A, no matter who I ask in teh hardware Dev chain. All say 11A.

It may well can do 13A, depends on the MOSFETS and cooling capacity. Not my call that one, sorry

Yay! I have proof the capping issue has been sorted! We finally have had a lovely sunny day!

As can be seen from this image, there has been no capping of the power today, and we consistently reached over 4kW! Peaking at 4.648kW generation, at 12.2A and 378.8v. [13 x JAM54S31-400/MR]

Since I'm still waiting on my G99, I only use solar to charge my batteries. It's so good to finally see them at 100% charge!

miffy I'm still waiting on my G99

Sshhh... AFAIAA Installer can retrospectively apply for G98 (>3.68kW export not possible) but has to submit a fast track G99 (all microgeneration type tested to G98 but export limited to 3.68kW) before commissioning. If the microgeneration is type tested to G99, they are supposed to get DNO agreement (even if offering a 3.68kW export limit) before connecting to grid (ie your consumer unit). But good the capping is resolved.

Tim I have a copy of the Offer Letter from my DNO approving up to 5kW export. The problem is that my house name changed before I bought the property and the DNO address needs correction. Octopus told me that the address needs to match that on the G99, despite the import MPAN being the same. Therefore I am still awaiting my G99. I have dropped a chaser email to my DNO (National Grid) and am waiting to hear back.

Does the new FW resolve the issue of poor low generation performance/ oscillations?

Today is a good example of this happening
Gen2 5kW hybrid (D906-A906)
PV1 9x JA 380W (4x with Tigo optimisers) @ 30dge
PV2 6x 320W (4x with optimisers) horizontal

Generation slowly increased until 07:15, then collapsed with intermittent output between each string and the resumed at 08:45 at 1700W total:

Both string current and voltage oscillate widely about the MPPT start up levels until the it settles with good generation:

The reverse occurs on the way down also, but not as bad.

dhb666 I have almost the same panel layout, and same inverter. I also see exactly the same problem. See justpassing I believe it is covered in the new firmware.
I found that if you reset thf inverter after the start of the early morning collapse, it will jump straight back to where it should be. But none of the automations let you reset, so get up early or wait for the new firmware 😁

kram I've now received a copy of the Acknowledgement Letter from the DNO which says "Thank you for providing confirmation of commissioning of the micro-generator connected in parallel with our distribution system at the above location. You may connect the micro-generator to our distribution system providing it complies with ..." and which shows my correct address, yay!
But.. this isn't a G99 form, so I've replied querying whether I should now expect a G99 form that shows I can export at up to 5kWh as per the Offer Letter.

kkowal78 OK this is the same as the Gen2.
AC Output x 1.5 (Total PV)
THen half each string, so a cap of 2700W seen. MPPT detunes the panels. So you dont see the 11A stated in the spec. You see around 8A

Bug report submitted. It was fixed on Gen2 in 24hr, so i don't expect it to be hard on Gen1 to resolve

Same fix for Gen1 & Gen 2

Looking for single string PV users, who have seen a cap of PV generation of 2700W HY3.6 or 3700W HY5 and not saturated the AC side, ie battery charging and AC out, but PV still capped for no known reason (not 11A limit either)

TheDragon (GivEnergy) I'm having the same problem on my Gen2 HY5 being string capped at 3700w and never get to 11amp. Could you also take at look at my inverter and push the update to unlock the cap? ED2248G069 many thanks
