I recently changed Broadband providers. I have managed to get all of my Wifi connected devices to work on the new router, except for the GivEnergy dongle. I have created a 2.4g only access point, as I understand that the dongle does not like a mixed 2.4 & 5g signal. I can access the dongle parameters on my laptop and search for the new Wifi signal, which the dongle finds OK. I select this signal and input the access code. I then rest the dongle as requested by the system. On reassessing the system, it would appear to have the new Wifi access stored, but the dongle keeps flashing slow blue and my phone app does not get live data. As a temporary work-round, I have connected my old Broadband router to the new one with a LAN cord, and then told the dongle to select the old Wifi setting, which it finds OK. My phone app then shows correct live data. Has anyone got an idea what the problem might ba, and how to get round it?

Peterlambert Simple way - and probably too late now, is to change the new router to the old SSID and password settings.
You can still do that, but means changing all the devices that you have changed over back again!
If I ever need to change router (I did upgrade mine recently) I do that - as at the current count of active wifi devices I have 27. Which would be a real pain to change!

Peterlambert the “issue” of mixed 2.4GHz and 5GHz wifi is a red herring. The point is that the dongle can only receive and transmit on 2.4GHz so whether 5GHz exists or not is immaterial. That said, the router may find that the 5GHz bandwidth has plenty of devices on and may reduce power on the 2.4GHz band on the assumption that there’s no requirement for it (clever stuff you’re fighting against). When you connect to the dongle Access Point to set up the new SSID etc, the dongle will be transmitting at a relatively high power on 2.4GHz but if the router isn’t also transmitting at high power, the SSID may not be being detected by the dongle when it is reset. Bringing the old router nearer on the end of an Ethernet cable is actually a good solution. Temporarily disabling the 5GHz band on the new router or setting it to high power mode on 2.4GHz may enable the dongle to detect it and make the connection.

5GHz wifi is able to carry more data and service more concurrent devices but cannot penetrate walls as well as the 2.4GHz band.

Why oh why didn’t they use wired Ethernet by default with an option for wifi? If you have to run STP for Modbus to the inverter, adding another cat5 for Ethernet is a trivial thing. Anyways, Ethernet is built in now, it’s just the older inverters that have this feature as standard.

anglefire In the nearish future I will be switching to Jurassic Fibre and I believe they do not allow you to get inside their router.
I'm hoping that because I use a mains TP-Link in the garage, I'll just have to re-pair that and the dongle will accept that.
Anyone know different? The dongle was originally set up by the installer.

wrefordj the mains extender often has one end plugged into mains by the router with an Ethernet cable connection to your router and the other end is somewhere on the same MCB circuit, either with a wifi Access Point enabled, an Ethernet port or both. If this sounds like yours, all you should need to do is unplug the Ethernet cable from the old router and plug in the same connector to the new router and that should be it, unless it’s configured as a dumb AP, presenting the SSID from the remote router.

If you are using an Android phone then I would recommend that you get an app called WiFi Analyzer (there are several). If you are an Apple user then you will have to check if there is something similar.

With this you can check what the signal strength is like next to your dongle. Also you can see what other networks around you may be causing interference.

Lots of 2.4ghz signals on the same channels can cause signal loss. Standard ISP equipment tends to come preset to 1/6/11. So if you find this to be the case then, if you know how to and your router permits you to do so, you can move to a different channel.

1/6/11 are the best performing (without going into lots of technical information) so if there are lots of other SSID's on 6 then moving to channel 1 or 11. If most are on 11 then moving to 1 or 6 will improve matters.

wrefordj I would be very surprised if you can't change the SSID and password of the wifi - that's a pretty big security risk in my mind.

I don't think that's totally true, the dongle refused to see my SSID at all to connect even until I disabled 5Ghz on it.
