Battery slow to take over load after Flux off-peak

For the last few days, it's been taking the battery a good 10-15 minutes to resume load after the scheduled 02:00 - 05:00 off-peak Flux charge period ends, prior to 15/05 this wasn't exhibiting this behaviour, and was quick.

Am I in a scenario where rebooting the inverter might be an idea? I don't think I've ever triggered one manually since it was installed last September.

Inverter: GIV-HY5.0
Inverter Firmware: D0.450-A0.451

Battery: 8.2kWH G1
Battery Firmware: 3007 (not updated yet but not sure this would impact how the BMS decides to use it?).

Can you confirm your options from the inverter card setting tab please? I assume ECO on, timed charge set to the flux cheap rate. Anything else? Have you checked the Remote Control option to read the registers to double check all your settings have applied correctly?

THALL I live with Eco on and Timed Discharge enabled basically.

Timed Charge is enabled and configured for 02:00 - 05:00 target SOC 100%
Timed Discharge is enabled and configured for 16:00 - 22:00 (prevent battery charging after 16:00 basically, export excess).

It starts the charge at the right time so it's not as if my entire inverter time setting is somehow out by 10-15 mins, and the battery does resume load by itself without intervention, it's just slow at doing it for some reason, causing me to draw from the grid for 10-15 mins despite there being plenty of battery charge available and the load being pretty static.

LordHippos I didn't think you could use all 3 options together? That is why people are using the octopus r&d for flux. When you say export excess you mean from your solar? If thats right then you just need Eco on and your timed charge and everything else off.

THALL On Flux this is the general flow:

02:00 - 05:00 Charge 100% SOC
05:00 - 16:00 Eco Mode + Timed Discharge enabled but because it's not Timed Discharge time slot it just acts like Eco Mode.
16:00 - 22:00 Timed Discharge slot which prevents the battery charging but doesn't dump battery to grid.
22:00 - 02:00 Eco Mode + Timed Discharge enabled but because it's not Timed Discharge time slot it just acts like Eco Mode.

I'm going to ignore Timed Export as that is a whole different kettle of fish, and is the main thing you'd need something like Octopus R&D to control, because Timed Export disables Eco Mode and Timed Discharge modes when it's enabled.

In the original scenario, this all works fine and Eco mode operation works outside of the Timed Discharge window as anticipated. Timed Discharge slot just prevents the battery from charging if it's within the configured time window for DC Discharge 1 timeslot.

I didn't want to drag this into a Flux specific issue too much because I don't think my timings or settings are causing this. I'm suspecting that it's getting confused as the daylight is coming in earlier and is almost getting light at 05:00 now, which seems to cause the BMS to conflict with itself as to whether it should charge the battery, or discharge to cover house load.

If it was my settings I wouldn't expect to see the battery fully taking over after 10-15 minutes like it does without issue, without any configuration changes.

LordHippos Well all the settings look correct. Have you raised this with support?

I am on flux, I do have a timed charge set but only to 16% soc. I do not have a timed discharge set either, I let it top up from a bit of sun, but I am rarely home before 6pm so still get 2 ours pure solar export.

THALL No not yet, though my last experience with GE support wasn't that amazing, not sure I feel like repeating the experience! 🙂

Hoping people on here may also have the same sort of issue as me.

I figure may as well charge at the off-peak rate, protects my power supply for the day if the weather is poor. If it's not poor then I just export solar to grid anyway.

LordHippos At the moment I leave my zappi on eco mode and trickle 1.5kw+ until 10pm so dumping a bit of my battery to my car. Using as much as I can myself is the idea. So far so good! Tiny grid import, high grid export. So far anyway!

THALL Apparently the behaviour of the modes is a little different between G1 and G2 as well, I saw some people saying timed discharge on G2 dumps the battery to the grid, which is definitely not what the G1 version does.

It over-complicates what is otherwise fairly simple to manage (in my approach shown the charge/discharge modes I've shown don't even need automation they just need enabling) but I do a timed export if the SOC is high enough between 16:00 - 19:00 and then stop it once the SOC gets close to 50%.

I found on Octo R&D scheduler that setting a 30min gap between any change of scenario allowed the inverter to complete each task before trying to set another.
When they were adjacent I could see the instructions in the inverter remote control history leaving Octo R&D and arriving at the inverter, but sometimes things overlapping causing confusion.

SteveCook Yes although in my scenario I'm not editing anything, the inverter knows the charge window ends at 05:00 and it should go back to using the battery to power the home, but instead for the last few days it's spent 10-15 minutes being confused about it 😃

This morning was the worst one so far spent 20 minutes drawing from the grid after 05:00.

I guess my next plan of action is one of the following, I will probably stagger tests to see if one thing helps resolve it:

  • Reboot the Inverter
  • Update Battery Firmware (probably not on a weekend in case of issues)
  • Flip the battery mode to strict eco instead of leaving it in timed discharge mode. I am not convinced on this though as it's been running like this for a while.

If none of this helps I can try and end the charge a little earlier, but it already doesn't have time to fill the battery as it is, so ending charge sooner just means less potential power available if the weather is poor as a trade off for some grid usage post 05:00.
