I have installed GIV-HY5.0 inverter and a Smart Automatic Transfer Switch. How do you tell the inverter to uses the battery when the mains power supply is not on (a power cut) or will I need another external 240v inverter to the battery ,this will uses a lot more power than needed ?

Would have thought that the clue was in the name Smart Automatic Transfer Switch and that it should switch to EPS when there is a cut but I’ve never heard of it. Expect someone more knowledgeable will be along soon
It Weill not operate in a power cut as you will try and power the grid and possibly elctrocute a linesman working on the issue
Exfarmer If an automatic transfr switch has been installed correctly and a seperately earthed EPS fed consummer unit or set of sockets has been installd correctly it should all happen auto magically. You do not need a seperate inverter as the transfer SHOULD isolate your HY5 from the grid, allowing it to supply power to the EPS circuit(s). ExFarmers point just should not happen.
why not use the built in EPS circuit?
what is the EPS circuit ?
have you got a circuit diagram on how to wire this ?

Emergency Power Supply.
When grid fails, the inverter goes into islanding mode and disconnects itself from the grid and makes use of any battery and solar power without risk of electrocuting anyone upstream.

what protection device have you employed at the EPS output and what inverter do you have (ac3 / hybrid)?
Inverter is Gen1 5.0
Protection at inverter end is presently 16A MCB with individual RCBOs in every outgoing way in the essential consumer unit.
I have ordered another double pole RCD to replace the MCB because I was having numerous nuisance trips with main RCD in essential CU even though that consumer unit was fine for 14 years (no trips) before the feed was changed from grid to EPS.

At 16 amps you dont have the same constraints an ac3 inverter has. always amusing when a regulation /rule can not be met as the hardware required is either not available or too expensive,

Now with double pole 16A RCD on EPS output and main RCD in Essential consumer unit on all circuits.
PITA to find the stray neutral, but worth it!!

I now have two consumer units. One is normal house one, and the new one is just for the EPS stuff.
I pulled out every neutral in the CU rails on both boards and one circuit at a time connected a neutral into the rails and with a meter saw if I got a cross connection reading on the neutrals between the 2 CUs.
I found the previous owner had used a 5 core cable to feed 3 light circuits, shared earth and shared neutral.
That all worked whilst the light circuits were all on the same consumer unit, but when I relocated one light circuit to the EPS board, the shared neutral was getting upset.
I had to run a new T&E cable from the EPS CU to power that circuit and keep everything separate.
