can people with the above let me know the normal and maximum temperature shown on the portal ? And if anyone knows what it is actually measuring that might be interesting or useful thanks
Gen1 5kw temperature
I only have a 3.6kW gen1, and the Heatsink (Tinv on the portal) temperature ranges from 33.8C when idle to 60.9C flat out, with an ambient temperature of 24C

There's 2 inside the Hybrid. They sit internally on the backplate the heatsink mounts to albeit about 2 inch apart from one another.
One measures area nearest the inductor pocket (the round lumps on the back of the heatsink) that the battery charger uses (Battery Charger temp)
The other measures i think the DC to AC conversion inductor pocket (inverter temp) but as they are quite close together one likely impacts the other with heat soak.
I could show you all this but alas GE got a grump on about my teardown so I've parked that for now until I have the enthusiasm to find out exactly why.
hoggy how do you know which one the reading is coming from? Suspect the second one as the highest temperatures are usually when exporting.
Slightly surprised by the lack of replies? Does that mean no one else checks or cares? I’m not sure I do but it caused GE to ask my installer to move the inverter

SimonClarke just had a look and the Charger temp isn't shown (think it's in GivTCP somewhere) so the one inverter temp reading you have is the basically the inverter internal backplate temperature reading.
Mine runs upto 60'C if its busy but its been doing it for 3 years no issue or throttling.
There's a big thread on this before, also one with people fitting fans hence why your probably not getting many responses.
hoggy yes I’ve seen the other one but I just wanted to know the temperatures without the rest! I’ve pretty much decided to put an extractor in anyway but if everyone is seeing 60 something when working hard I won’t worry about it.
SimonClarke This is a HA plot of the inverter reported temperature (upper line) and ambient (lower line) for yesterday. This is one of two HY5s in an old airing cupboard. I've two small 12V fans which force air upwards over each inverter heatsink when the temperature reaches 40°C and a cupboard extract fans draws air out of the cupboard when the inverter temperature exceeds 45°C. You can see that with the solar generation yesterday, the extract fan didn't need to operate at all. With all this additional cooling, I've not seen the inverter temperature exceed about 47°C, even when both inverters are each dealing with 6kW+ PV.

Tim this is with the 12v fans operating? But not the extractor? I’m thinking of getting just an extractor (easier for various reasons). I was hoping to get a reversible one but that seems near impossible so I might try it pulling out warm air but turning it round to blow if that fails (or get two)
SimonClarke The 12V fans operate when the temperature exceeds 40°C and stop when the temperature falls below 39°C. The extract fan cuts in at 45°C and stop when the temperature falls below 40°C. The switching on and off is automated with Node-RED within Home Assistant. It's so reliable, I don't even look any more. There's a tab in HA that displays the current states:

The temperatures above, between and below the Givenergy kit is derived from three DS18B20 thermocouples connected to an ESP32 which also controls the 12V fans, a 240V circulation fan and the 240V extract fan. I added the circulation fan to see if that would help with rapid cooling of the inverters be reducing the ambient temperature above the inverters but all it does is give the extract fan more air to remove, drawing cooler air in from below.
Think I’m going to get an in line extractor and plug in thermostat off Amazon. Don’t have HA so will try the cheap option first and see what happens. Really wanted a reversible one so it can extract warm air in summer and blow in cold in the winter but I can’t find anything acceptably priced so I’ll try it removing to start with then turn it round when it gets cold outside. Might then put a second one in if it works.
SimonClarke Are you extracting from a space or are you talking about addition cooling fin air flow? If you are wanting to extract air from the space (eg bathroom extract fan as we have), I'd not worry about reversing it in winter; just let the space leak air from the house in. You may find that if the space is large enough, small fin cooling fans will be enough to remove the heat from the inverter and mix with the rest of the air in the space. I fitted an extract fan because we have two HY5s in a fairly small space directly under the roof where the PV panels are and the ambient temperature goes up when the panels are generating. If it was a larger space, or on the ground floor, it'd probably not need the extract fan at all.
It’s a cupboard normal room height x 600 x 1100 with the inverter, battery and consumer units etc. I think the highest ambient I’ve seen is 36c unless I put the thermometer on top of the inverter when it was 41. The inverter is fairly high so even with the extractor pulling it will be directly above the inverter and drawing from under the door so hopefully might work. The idea of blowing when cold was to put the spare heat into the house - “free” heat so to speak! As it’s indoors the temperature in the cupboard won’t vary much but I guess it won’t get so hot as not exporting much. Total cost on Amazon £63 so I’ll give it a whirl.
