Sorry for some newbie questions but I am just having a GE 5kw Gen3 Inverter and 2x 9.5 GE Batteries installed linked up to 2 PV strings giving around 7kWh of solar….

I am a bit confused on the inverter inputs and outputs. Is my understanding right in that…

1) The two strings (4kWh and 3 kWh) generating PV will go in full into the batteries (assuming no home load and enough solar around) ?

2) The house can only draw a maximum of 3.6 kWh from the batteries and will need either solar or grid to run loads over 3.6 kWh ?

3) If importing/exporting from the grid, the batteries can only be topped up/discharged at a rate of 3.6kWh to and from the grid ?

Apologies in advance for the dumb questions I will be asking over the next few weeks :-)

cluelesscris It's not specifified by the spec sheet above but you might be limited to 3.6kw export because its a DNO limitation. Your installer can apply for an increase to this through the DNO but that may be dependent on the capacity of the local network. If you get approval you will be able to export up to 5kw.

cluelesscris Ah yes, limited by the DNO to 3.6 kWh. To increase this I needed to spend over £20,000 with them to upgrade the street :-)

But how does the spec effect the to home and from grid bits?

Phil89a Spec sheet - AC output power 5kw (i.e. combined battery & solar is capped at around 5kw or 21.7 amps). If you have EPS installed there's a similar limit as the inverter can still let you use solar when EPS is active. Battery power alone (i.e. no solar at night, etc) is up to 2.5kw.

cluelesscris My inverter is Gen3, so I think that means charging at 3.3 and discharging at 3.6 ?

So I assume max load into the house when there is no solar is 3.6 kw; above that it comes from the grid ?

correct. However, the 3.3 might be before conversion losses. My AC3 is supposed to discharge at 3kw but tops out at 2.85
kw (ish).

I was under the impression that with a 3.5kw hybrid inverter could deliver more than 3.5kw if more than 3.5kw was available from solar and battery charge and house load met this load. However, trying out this theory yesterday I was unable to exceed 3.6kw load in total? Have I understood this incorrectly?

Most of the solar to the battery, some to the house?

E.g. 5kW (if that's right?) solar, some to battery and maximum of 3??? or 3.6??? through the inverter and out into the house.

Not sure of the actual limits, but hopefully the theory makes sense?

anthonypar The rating of the hybrid (AFAIK) is the DC to AC rating. on top of that is the DC-DC rating. Our gen1 HY5s can theoretically deliver 2.5kW PV to battery at the same time as 5kW to AC if there was sufficient PV available. That the reason we reduce battery charge rate, so that export or EV charging happens earlier in the day and clipping is reduced.

Thanks for the info. I will try some more experiments to attempt to use all of the solar power produced and reduce clipping.
