Hi,
I’m quite new to all this and have recently had my GE inverter and battery installed.
I have noticed on two occasions since install that the battery has gone from 10% to 1% immediately when there is no excessive load. Looking in the Logs there was a BMS Under Voltage reported at the time.
I have had a quick search but latest seems to have been from 2021.
Has anyone else seen this or should I contact my installer/GE customer support?

Welcome to the GE Battery BMS mess. You will see much worse than a drop from 10%-1%. My AIO collapses from 50% to cutout. Best of luck with getting any response out of GE, my tickets raised on the web portal have not even been acknowledged.

kram I've also only just got my system, though I've been lurking here for a long time. I'm aware of that thread, but isn't 3007 really old now ? It's hard to know the current status. A lot of the problems appear to be for those with multiple batteries. (I believe AIO has multiple batteries internally ?)

DD The thread goes all the way back to version 3007 (there's nearly 3000 posts).

The problem still exists in both 3012 and 3013 (although 3013 is junk so avoid). I'm on my fourth full calibration in under 4 months and the SoC even crashes during calibration.

I don't believe GE know how to rectify the problem.

Phm88 If you're getting battery undervoltage warnings (I don't see this, nor do most others) when the SoC crashes to zero then that will be reducing the lifespan of the battery so I'd raise it as a fault. Don't take any nonsense about "firmware problem" - insist on them dealing with it properly.

If you're under 30 days from install then you have additional rights - like a full refund.

Vestas I was running 3012 and didn't have any soc drops since moving onto that. I tried the beta version of 3012 too and on another beta since then. Not seen any soc drops since.

(Previously had 2 or 3 I think).

TX200 I was on 3012 initially and the problem with that one I saw was that it under-reported the SoC by about the same amount 3013 over-reports it. Eg - it'd jump from 80% to 100%, whereas 3013 does the polar opposite by collapsing from 20% to zero.

Frankly that is a more acceptable situation to me than batteries collapsing from 30% to zero instantly with battery voltages of 45V (2.8V per cell!) immediately prior to SoC crash.

Shouldn't have gone near 3013, won't be touching their next effort for a few months after release!

Actually I think I'll set a HA trigger to force charge the battery when cell voltage hits 2.85V.

It appears the GE BMS is incapable of working out that if the cell has dropped from 3V to 2.8V inside 15 minutes then there's NO WAY you have more than 5% capacity.

That might be the way to go rather than messing around with "calibrations" which achieve nothing other than a "fix" which lasts a couple of weeks if you're lucky.

Vestas yeah I think having that sudden jump is better than dropping to empty. Neither is ideal.

But for a non AIO user (as that has its own separate problem that looks like a soc drop), I've been happy with all the beta versions except one earlier one that drained too quickly (well, it didn't, but it thought it was).

There's been a number of small and big bugs along the journey, most of which hasn't been experienced by non-beta users. 3013 being the main exception to that.

Be interested in your script for that if you do develop it. I’ve never noticed any BMS drops on my batteries but better to be safe than sorry.
BMS 3013 on my 5.2, 3012 on my 9.5.
Have seen maybe a few more BMS under/over voltage errors on 3013, but only a handful

geoffreycoan I meant to type 2.95V there rather than 2.85V (which is too late to stop a cutout probably). Edit - this value will need tweaking to individuals I reckon, hopefully only used as a "failsafe" when the SoC is wrong again rather than anything else.

Looking at the cell voltage graph its a classic LFP profile, pretty flat between 20-80% (depending on discharge current) until you hit what should be 20% capacity when it starts to decline - below 10% and the decline accelerates rapidly. NB the decline can be very rapid indeed if you put a heavy load on the cell when it hits 3V.

Should be fairly easy to do given the sampling rate of HA/GivTCP.

Interesting. While trawling through GivTCP entities I notice that yesterday's calibration reduced the Battery Capacity figure from 197.12Ah (where its been since install AFAICT) to 193.25Ah. 2% drop in 4 months or figure incorrect in the first place?

Note that this is on a battery with a "design capacity" reported as 184.32Ah - overprovisioned, just manufacturing variations or does the capacity figure include losses within the battery when charging? Who knows 🙂

Still something has changed with this calibration which didn't with the others so that's some form of change/progress maybe?

Out of interest, when this has been seen by others has it been mainly in the colder months or does it persist in the summer?
I’m in Fife Scotland and the outside temperature at the time it occurred was below 10oC, the system is in the garage but at the door with no insulation.
I’m used to seeing rapid drops in the colder weather with my EVs (non LFP batteries) so I would suspect this to happen with a home battery.

Its nothing to do with temperature - ours has been between 18-26C ambient since it was installed.

Hard to tell for summer as 3012 did the opposite of 3013....

Mine has been ok until this week. Went from 10% to 100% with under 2kWh input from solar, then exported solar. As soon as solar ceased it plummeted down to 8% in around an hour with only 1kW drain from house!
This needs to be fixed ASAP.

Not for me to dictate, but I can't help thinking it would have made more sense to discuss each beta version in a separate thread. Though IIRC there's now a separate closed forum for beta testing - perhaps that's more organised.

DD Maybe thats a good idea, though you would need a massive filing system to try and organise every flawed piece of firmware!

I just checked my bank account... I did not pay for the GE equipment with Beta money. No, it was REAL hard earned Sterling. So to be told to stick it out with equipment that is not fit for purpose while the supplier is doing beta testing, is unacceptable.

treborUK There does seem to be a trend of this sudden drops becoming worse this week with different setups. Mine is the AIO - worst of them all! BUt also reported by over 3000 posts from other battery setup users.

geoffreycoan No surprise that the full calibration only lasted 4 days before a 12%->0% SoC crash 🙂

What's not so amusing is the battery cells being taken so low prior to the SoC crash when its predictable from the point the cells on my battery go below 3V.

There's 15 minutes of battery power left at this point on a base load of about 500W before the battery barfs with cells around 2.8V and does the "SoC crash" as we all seem to be calling it.

I'm running a HA automation now which basically does the following* -

If the cells on the battery drop below 3V for 2 minutes (allows for local GivTCP timeouts) then disable discharge. Then force charge the battery for 15 minutes. Battery won't discharge until the next charge cycle which will reset that. Probably simple enough for us.

I'll see how it goes - something for a different thread anyway.

*9.5kW G2 battery, gen1 hybrid so max charge rate to battery is around 2.4kWh and hence force charge puts 600Wh into battery in 15 minutes.

Vestas Is there a way of seeing the cell voltages because I can only see the voltage of my complete 9.5kw battery. I have had a couple of undervoltage messages and twice my system went to zero percent and once to 1 percent so this would be useful information when it happens again and I phone up.

GaryS Mine is an AIO too. After the blip of a few days the other week week it seems to be operating more normally again although still only takes circa 10-11 kWh to full charge.
Waiting for the next firmware and a battery calibration to hopefully fix it.

I have the 2.6 battery which discharges regularly below the standard 4 percent down to 0 then cuts out . I’ve given up trying to get it fixed.
I had a new battery 6 months ago then all was fine until recently when the old property reared it’s uglier head.
It flared up again after a failed random calibrating which no one can explain why the calibrating even started !
