Hi all, just got set up 2 days ago but each day the battery has been dumping everything into the grid starting at 09:00. I don't have an export tariff set up yet, so I'm not getting anything at all for this I think...

I have no idea how the settings work and the options seem to be extremely basic. I have Octopus Intelligent so I'd like to charge the battery up overnight between 23:30 and 05:30. I'd like to use the battery for home usage only during the day, and add any extra solar to the battery throughout the day.

Am I missing anything or are the options really this basic? How do I stop the battery dumping to the grid?

Bring this side panel up and go to "My Inverter"

You should see something like this

Go to Settings and it should bring up this

You can cycle through the options to see the current status of each.

Thanks for the reply. So ECO is on.

I've set the timed charge as mentioned. On the website this specifically says "from the grid" so you would assume solar would prioritise putting any excess into the batteries.

Timed discharge I tried setting "off" as well as "09:00 - 20:00" but it seems the battery dumps either way. Note that here it says "to your home" where the app says to home and grid.

Timed export is disabled.

Note that the mobile app is very different, and the charge settings only specify "solar + grid" during that window, presumably the reason why excess solar is just going to the grid and not into the battery during the day?

Also here the battery discharge settings has another option that the web does not. Even selecting "Consumption Type - Home Demand" the excess is dumped into the grid.

I'm at a loss.

Sorry, to make it clear, because we have Octopus Intelligent with time-of-day pricing and an electric car that charges up overnight at the cheap rate too (non-GivEnergy), if I leave timed discharge off, it just dumps straight into the car as soon as the 05:30 time hits, completely taking away the point of having a separate battery.

Im in same boat as you for use case, and Ive been helped here to do same thing so let me pass it on

You need :-

  • Go to setting webpage and click reset to default
  • Wait 10 mins
  • Then go back to same setting screen and the only place to change is timed charge set that from 23:30 to 05:30
  • As you have 6 hours I would possibly take a bit of pressure off everything and put the battery charge rate (in battery options) to around 3.2 leave discharge at 6
  • Leave everything else as is so eco on and discharge and export disabled

You'll then get battery charging along with car and normal house use all at cheap rate then battery will start to power the house during the day

As Dreador said there is no real need for the timed discharge being set considering the time of year it is as it will start feeding house when solar isn't enough unless you were saving it for a specific period of the day.

Try it with just the timed charge and see how you get on for a day or two then if you want to test turn it back on to see if that was the cause of your issue.

You can then make a decision on what to do after you have all the info.

Ewanhamilton I think you want the "Consumption Type" set to "dynamic", rather than "scheduled".
Might want to reduce the "charge up to" a bit - if the battery is completely full by morning, there's nowhere to put any solar, and it will have to export it. (Though once you do get your export tariff set up, 100% might make more sense, since export payments are higher than overnight import.)

A complication with IOG is that Octopus might give additional charging slots, and you need to work to stop the house battery discharging to the car. (Unless you can arrange that the GivEnergy system cannot see the car charger.)

I did wonder about this but couldn't find any information about it. Really annoyingly both solar and charger were installed by EON and I had hoped they would integrate more!

Ewanhamilton You "just" need to arrange that the CT sensor for the GE system (the clip that goes around the meter tails) is placed after the supply for the EVSE is taken, so that it cannot see any power going to the car.
Assuming the car, solar and house each have their own consumer unit, and they're daisy-chained in the correct order, then it could be trivial.

It's potentially still useful for your home automation system to know when the extra charge slots are happening, so that you can charge the GE battery at the same time. I think that's relatively straightforward unless you have an Ohme charger, since Ohme don't make the schedule available via an API, AFAIK.
