Was my Christmas meal with my retired work mates this week, I was asked how well my solar install was going and we went down the export rabbit hole, I was asked “how does the inverter know when to export if you leave it to it to do its thing, is it pulled or pushed?”. I didn’t know !
So how does the power flow back to the grid/sub-station?
From slightly higher voltage (say 236v) at your inverter back to grid at around 235v.
Electrical Potential Difference of a battery is the voltage difference between the plus and minus terminals and is like water in a pipe. When the battery is flat, the PD is zero so nothing happens when you connect it to anything.
It wants to flow from the higher number to the lower number.
It doesn't necessarily go back the substation, it will go to your neighbours and the power station will see a lower load.
nophead Yep well said. It will come out of any "pipe" at a lower voltage than the inverter is pushing it in
