PV Excess Exporting Not Charging Battery

I’ve noticed my Gen 3 3.6kW Hybrid inverter Gen 2 9.5kW battery behaving oddly over the last week.

Excess solar (above house load) seems to be getting exported rather than diverted to the battery. The below screenshots for today are from the app with 10s data rather than from the web portal with 5 min data.

The battery charge rate seems to have been stuck at 290W despite there being plenty of excess solar.

Eco mode is enabled, all timed charge/discharge/export options are disabled, battery options are 4% reserve (96% useable) and 3600W charge and discharge power. I’ve tried “reset to defaults” multiple times today from both the app and web portal without change to the behaviour.

There are periods where the charge rate jumps up to match the excess solar generation, but these are relatively short lived (5 - 10 mins).

The system was only commissioned on the 3rd of May but I’ve rarely seen the battery charge above 70% except during the initial calibration. The last three days have been especially good and I was expecting to see the battery charge fully before exporting anything but it seems to be prioritising grid export and battery charge at 290W.

Is this fairly normal behaviour or is there some other setting I should be looking at?

Whilst posting it has now begun charging the battery with the excess solar as I would expect. I just don’t get why the logic has left it so late in the day before attempting to fully charge the battery.

dodger421 Do you have any external agents controlling the battery ? (Home Assistant, WonderWatt, smart tariff on GE, ...). It's certainly possible to get that effect by adjusting the max charging power. (I run a script which constantly adjusts charging power to try to export as much as possible while avoiding clipping.)

One feature of newer inverters (or maybe firmwares) is that even setting max charge power to 0, it will still actually charge at around 300W. If you use the 'pause' quick setting on the app, for example, I think that works by setting max charge and discharge powers to 0, though from the screenshot it looks like you have the quick-settings button turned off.

You could have a look in the activity log at the bottom of the remote-control page on the portal, where it should record any api requests (from any source) adjusting your system. But Home Assistant tends to bypass the api, so changes by it wouldn't show up there.

I do have HA running GivTCP but I’m only reading values from it for the energy dashboard and a couple of display dashboards. Some GivTCP information is also logged in EmonCMS via an MQTT bridge configured in HA.

No automations are enabled and I can’t see any outgoing charge rate limiters from the HA logs or incoming changes from the GivEnergy portal remote control logs. HA/GivTCP reports the charge rate stayed at 3600W since commissioning.

I did enable the “solar + battery” smart tariff automation in the portal last Sunday but turned it off and reset everything to defaults on the Tuesday as it didn’t really seem to be working properly. The battery wasn’t charging at 2 - 4pm and then did a forced discharge from 4pm onwards which meant it was empty by 5.30pm and we relied on solar to avoid peak import. You can see that on the attached log.

My installer actually got in touch about this today after checking in through the portal. He noticed the battery wasn’t charging at full rate due to a cell imbalance and forced a calibration cycle to try and resolve.

I’ll see how it goes tomorrow but this is one of the benefits of the GivEnergy ecosystem and having a proactive installer. I hadn’t actually raised the problem with him because I thought it was likely a settings problem on my side.
