Inverter offline + internet "sleep"

Hi guys,
New system here (GE Hy5), haven't had a lot of issues. but due to BT messing with my contract and stopping my internet for the next 2 weeks!!!! My inverter has now gone to sleep or offline and I can't get it back up.

I was able for connect my mobile hotspot to my original home router, and the inverter was working fine yesterday. But this morning it is all asleep and not generating anything. On the portal it say the inverter is offline.

Now, I would like if possible to know how to kick it back to "online" or working? Does it need a restart, and if yes, how do I do that?
And second, can I disable this "sleep" function at the loss of internet? If at all possible, as it looks like I might be in the same boat for the next couple of weeks.

My internet went down unexpectedly the other night. The portal and app were reporting the same as you are, offline. However, the system was still working as I was able to see from the smart meter IHD. I can’t say for certain, but it’s possible your system is still operational, it’s just the data that you will be missing. Not sure if you have a smart meter but even if you don’t, you could take a meter reading and check again later in the day to see what is going on with grid import.

I don't have IHD. All I have is the app/portal. Or a short walk to my garage.

Where I can see the inverter is offline and not generating anything. And the house is pulling everything from the grid.

rio911 worth a try. Strange though that the inverter is all ‘dark’, I would have though it would still be getting power. Hope you get it sorted.

It is not "dark". The lights are still "on" on the front. But current status:

  • there is no green "on" circle, no red either, simply off;
  • power line from PV is "Off" (no lights);
  • house is drawing power (green lights);
  • grid is providing power (green lights in direction of middle/house)

Perhaps a call to support is in order.

Turn it off and on again?

wilfleek How? That is my problem? First of my problems...

rio911 go to the portal, inverter card, there is a button that looks like an on/off power button. Click on that.

c_squared Portal says "offline" and "No data since 27/5/22"

Sorry guys, I'm going to be screaming for a bit: f-ing BT,

You have no idea the networking jiujitsu that I had to do to get it back online. My inverter is WG.., which I thought supports both 2.4G and 5G, but it turns out it doesn't. And because of the wireless bridging of my router to get some mobile internet going, I was out of 2.4G band.

Ok, I'm back online.

But for future reference, how do I get in the AP from the inverter, WG...? I would like to be able to change the network settings, as this whole thing would have been much, much easier if I could simply change the network. I'm missing a password for the AP, and I could not figure it out.

I think the installers are supposed to set a password (and tell you what it is!)
I think default credentials are admin / admin - obviously change this once you're attached.
Double check security settings too - you'll want to have it set to WPA2PSK.

andrew_bond I mean the password for the wireless AP, not the server. I think what you have given is the default login for the server, once you are connected to the AP. According to all documentation from GE that I have seen, the AP is open by default. So, that you can connect straight away. But mine has a password already, and I can't find it.

Is the password your inverter's serial number?

I think that's what the guide suggests installers should set it to.

rio911 Ah, I see (you mean the WPA key). If the installer set up WPA2PSK already and the key isn't the inverter serial number, you'll probably have to ask your installer what they set it to.

Mine was left open - since closed off.

Yes, WPA key. I tried the AP name which is WG.... I also tried the S/N which is on the side of the inverter and starts with EG... (might be misremembering it though, but it was different). Did not work.

Anyway, on to my second question:
Can I disable this "offline" function at the loss of internet? If at all possible, as it looks like I might be in the same "rocking" boat for the next couple of weeks.

rio911 I don't think what you're seeing is the expected behaviour. What should happen if internet goes down is only that the portal won't be able to see the inverter; any settings made previously should continue to apply, GivTCP will be able to modify and view settings locally, but remote control methods that use the portal will not work. I'm not sure why yours is behaving like that - suggest you ask support if they can explain it.
BTW instructions to power-cycle the system can be found in another topic here: search for "Inverter Flashing Green - not force charging".

I just found a pdf for wifi setup which suggests 12345678 as the WPA key - try that...

rio911 Sorry but why you screaming on BT. Givenergy fu***d up with design inverter that it can not operational properly without internet. It should be access to Inverter data without connected to internet. Pore design from there side as well. Now they should supply for free of charge sim card dongle and pay for subscription.

HipHopAst
The inverter can and does work without Internet access. What it cannot do, understandably, is communicate with the GivEnergy servers if there is no Internet access.

@rio911 If you cannot connect to the dongle as an unknown password has been set, then you reset the dongle back to default setting by pressing and holding the reset button under the cap of the dongle. Then follow the dongle instructions that are in the GivEnergy KnowledgeBase.

HipHopAst Sorry, BT cancelled my internet contract and made me sign a new one, which will start in 2 weeks. Until then I was left without home internet. They really f$$$ed up. Now BT have sent me small a$$ mobile hotspot that can't handle even a single video stream!

R

andrew_bond Thanks, I think I read this thread... I will look again, but can you point me in the right direction? What am I looking for?

Zakalwe Well, mine doesn't seem to like to stay "ON" without internet. I understand that the connection will be gone, so no app or portal info.

But mine simply shuts down after about 12hrs of "no comms". No generation according to the meter and no flashing green circle on the front of the inverter. Yesterday, I managed to restore communications (BT mobile hotspot). But to get the inverter started again, I had to basically shut it down through the two isolating switches. It is now working fine after the restart.

By the way, I don't have a separate dongle, so no way to reset it.
