Downloading daily PV generation data for a whole year

Is it possible to generate a CSV of daily PV generation for an entire year?

I can get daily reports (repeat 365 times) and paste the data into a spreadsheet and the website report will give me monthly totals, but I cannot see an option to report daily totals over a custom period.

I must be missing something as I can't see why this wouldn't be available.

Does anyone have any insight please?

lozzer1962 Personally I keep monthly solar generation records. It’s good enough for seeing what the trend and ‘is this year better/worse than last year’. Individual days vary so much with the weather, local conditions, snow on the panels, fog, etc, etc.

I do have daily solar generation in Home Assistant captured from my inverters, but I hardly look at it. Again only look at the longer term trends.

If you want the daily data then above gives you a route to find it, but I suggest its more data than you really need.

I really wanted daily data to work out if my battery will hold sufficient PV energy during the summer months when the house isn't using much, so I don't need to export and can then go onto a standard EV tariff for charging my EV overnight.

At the moment Octopus won't allow the combination of export and a low overnight EV charge rate. Neither are they compatible with my BYD EV and the GivEnergy charger for EV to Grid export. That's why I'm investigating options.

lozzer1962 The GivEnergy inverter isn’t currently approved for Octopus Inteligent Go and if your car isn’t, then that would rule OIG out for you.

Octopus have however removed the 8p export tariff that was paired with Octopus Go, so you’ll get paid the same 15p export rate whether you are on Go or IOG https://octopus.energy/blog/outgoing-faqs/#tariffcombinations

As an alternative to Octopus, you could consider Eon Drive which has a better export rate (16.5p), longer cheap rate hours and no tie-in to specific chargers or cars. Or Tomato Energy which a few people have gone to has a very cheap EV rate, again no tie-in, but Tomato don’t currently pay for Export.

We are on the Intelligent Octopus Flux Import and Export tariffs, which means that we get the same export rate as import (21.88p off-peak and 29.17p peak - which is 4:00pm-7:00pm), so it doesn't matter if I use what I generate, or give it back.

EV-specific tariffs don't allow you to combine Export, PV, battery and EV charging tariffs. If I want cheap overnight charging I will need to forego the payments for anything the system exports.

I am looking to work out if my battery has enough capacity to store all the PV energy during the summer months, so I'm not losing it back to the grid, when I'm not able to charge up the EV with any excess.

Octopus have acknowledged their incomnpatibility with 95% of EVs on sale today and don't have any plans to implement vehicle to grid across the board, even though my EV is capable. I think that they are worried that everyone will go out and buy a clapped-out EV, charge it up cheaply at night and then sell back the power during the day. They'd lose money!

No that’s not correct, the different tariffs are optimised for different things, and whilst you won’t get the same rate as you do at the moment for export on IOF, you will still get paid for export.

The strategy for how you use your tariff could well change depending on the characteristics of the tariff.

At the moment on IOF as you say you are getting paid the same rate for export as you do for import. Export at 21.88p is a great rate, but importing at 21.88 is not a good rate you can do much better on other tariffs.

e.g. Octopus Go will give you 8.5p overnight charge rate for 5 hours and 27p import rate during the day/evening with no peak rate. So depending on your battery and solar generation its perfectly possible to be paying for all your imported electricity at 8.5p. And you get paid 15p for all your export.
Not as good as you get on IOF but still profit to be made on the difference between import and export rates.

With EV tariffs like Go as explained above you actually make more money by grid charging your EV overnight and exporting your PV during the day, then a final discharge of your battery just before the cheap charging period and start the whole cycle again.

Another strategy is to look at your costs over the whole year. Export plenty in the summer months and build up a credit that lasts you through the winter. That’s the approach I take, I have an ASHP so high winter consumption and bills of £250 or so a month, but in the summer I built up a credit on my account of £1000 from exporting so overall my 2024 bill was just £10.

There’s no single answer for everyone. Octopus don’t also have the best tariffs at the moment either
