How safe is it to remove the dongle and copy the files?

My neighbour has a problem with his dongle, which seems to have lost/corrupted files. He has purchased a new dongle and wants me to remove my dongle to copy the files on mine to a usb for him.

What I do not want to do is remove my dongle and find that it wil not work when I plug it back in after copying the files.

What are the risks of removing my dongle (for enough time to copy the files) and then plugging it back in? Is there a safe process to follow to do this?

I have a GEN 1 3.6 hybrid with 2 x 2.6 batteries and his is also a GEN 1 3.6 hybrid with a 9.2 battery

Stevef1964 The only file on the dongle is MSN.txt which is the serial number of the dongle and is specific to your install. If you put that on your neighbour's dongle then neither system will work.

He'll need to talk to GE/his installer to get the new dongle commissioned.

Also why did he buy a dongle? Its warrantied.

Is the serial number just plain text in that MSN.txt file?

If so, couldn't it just be edited to show the correct serial number (the one stamped on the broken dongle) then copied to the new dongle?
