I'm having issues on my givenergy system for some reason the power is being taken from the grid rather than the battery. My battery is 100% but it's drawing power from the grid and my solar. My setup has hybrid inverter and 9.5kw battery. I've done the obvious rebooted the inverter and turned the battery on and off again. Any advice would be appreciated.

Check Eco is on.
Check you haven’t paused the battery.
Check no charge/discharge/export windows and levels are causing it.
Quite a few other settings could impact it, so maybe try a reset defaults through the portal in case a register has been corrupted.

Hi, I'm having the same issue. Worked perfectly yesterday but since finishing its overnight charge it has been discharging at 10-20W only. I even set up a discharge and nothing happened.

Think I've sorted mine. It looks like I had inadvertently put a time in one of the unused Charge Slots. I'll blame that using a tablet to set values - as the portal does not always render as well on it.

RichardChester sorted it, I just reset it back to default. I think I was barking up the wrong tree pulling what little hair I have left.

Reading forum posts has helped me understand a bit more about the logic in my inverter – so happy to share observations here …
If you define a period of Inverter time as ‘battery charging time’ then that seems to be all the inverter will do with the battery – to be specific – it will not ask the battery to meet Home demand during that time – even if it’s fully charged and the Sun is contributing.
Seems the trick is to guess how much of Octopus’ cheap time (for example) will be used as ‘charging time’ to avoid the Grid being asked to meet Home demand not met by the Sun.
I wonder if the Giv boffins can build in a bit more ‘Firmware Smartness’ to make this automatic and reduce a bit of Grid-time … maybe they already have in the next firmware edition???

But if the grid is cheap enough to charge the battery, you probably also want to run the house from the grid too?

Very True DD ... but I also want the battery full enough to cook the tea when the Grid price is at max ... guess the root cause of the problem is that our battery is too small to run the place without a bit of Grid support during the day ... and I guess I'm trying to find a generic solution to avoid changing things when the weather changes ...

I'm interested to learn more about Steve Cook's suggestions - what do you use to implement the apps - do you dedicate a PC?

A Pi or cheap laptop will run HA & Predbat, takes some computer skills & setting up but is then effortless.

WonderWatt is a subscription based on line controller, simple to use but you need to input into it daily depending on your supplier & tariff.

DocGra I am a user of WonderWatt. I am on the Agile tariff which means my cheap grid slots move around but this schedule helps me to ensure there is enough charge in the battery for the evening peak.


What this schedule does is choose the cheapest 3 30 minute slots between 11am and 4pm to make sure my battery is at least 70% charged. This is then enough to carry me through the evening peak. If I have enough solar, the batteries reach 70% before the grid slots and no grid energy is taken. But if I had no solar (very grey day) then 3 slots get me to 70% charge. In-between it will just bring in enough grid energy to reach 70%. The hold feature puts the house onto the grid when the battery needs the charge (stops discharges between 11 and 4).

So by using this schedule I can minimise grid imports (which may cost me more than I can get for exporting solar) without overdoing it. All the necessary commands that this schedule produces are sent over the internet to your inverter via the Giv-Energy servers (after you have given it permission).

PS I chose 70% by looking back through historical records as to how much energy I used in the evening peaks over a few weeks and set it to cover the max. (Originally I had 55% and then had a day when I used 15% equivalent energy at peak rates which on Agile can be up to £1 a kWh!). If your battery isn't big enough for this then set it to 100% (and perhaps consider a bigger battery?)

Thanks chaps, going to spend my retirement learning to code anew ... once played with analogue computers then learnt Fortran then Basic and real-time process control and lately Excel's macro-speak ... seems I now need to learn about Raspberry Pie's ... going to ask the wife - she makes wonderful apple crumbles ... 🙂

Alternately I have a Windows 10 laptop that doesn't want to speak Win11 - so may do something with it's operating system at a lower level - so I can watch the cloud data at the same time as tariffs and market prices ...

I'm sure it will keep me interested but hope it squeezes the last Watt off my lecky bill ... although 18 panels, a Hybrid and a 9.5kW battery seem to export more than we import - so we're not paying much for our power - over a year.
