Hi all,

I’ve been with EON since my solar system was installed in February 2023.

My main frustration is the lack of automation with SEG payments. Every month I have to submit a manual meter reading, even though I have a smart meter that I’d assumed EON should be able to use for export readings. On top of that, I have to email them each month to request my SEG export payment, which takes a long time to process. For example, I’m still waiting for my August payment (today is 24th September), and in just a few days I’ll need to go through the same process again for September.

Is this the standard experience with EON, or are there other providers that handle this in a more streamlined and hassle-free way?

I think this is standard for EON

Octopus read your smart meter and pay you as a credit to your account every month.

Octopus also offer two export options, either 15p fixed (which is slightly less than the 16.5 I think you are getting on EON) or outgoing agile where the export rate varies every 30 minutes. For summer I wouldn't recommend outgoing agile but in winter when my heat pump is consuming all I can generate I was on outgoing agile for a couple of months which meant that when I did export in a DFS saving session I got paid a really good rate.

I had an email from them recently and in there, they said they can now read from the meter (although I think they would only do this once per year)

Hi there,

Just a friendly reminder that your Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) tariff is coming up for renewal soon.

Important to know - you might get an automated email saying "Your Fixed Tariff is ending soon" which will have your SEG account info.

What happens next? We've taken some great steps in the last year in how we look after your SEG account. One exciting update is that we can now automatically collect readings from your smart meter - so we'll try to get a reading for your upcoming payment. If successful, we'll include your payment details with your renewal notice. If we can't get an automatic reading, don't worry. We'll simply include a link in your renewal email asking for a photo, just like before.

Firstly, I agree it is daft that they cannot take the reading from the Smart meter for the export kWH. However, you do not have to go through this every month. You can do it quarterly or even annually.

I am a customer of Eon too, and in reality, I do my export payment readings twice a year, once in the summer (end of June) and at the end of October.

I did ask Eon export support people if they have any plans to automate the process, or indeed have the option to put the payment on the consumer account as a credit. I was told that they have a solution in development and were hoping to start rolling it out in early 2026. We shall see if this was correct.

killythebid I do my export payment readings twice a year,

I like to see my export totals both kWh and £ in the octopus app the next day!
also live via the octopus mini.

Robgy yes it must be nice, but I shall comfort myself with getting 16.5p per kWh.
