So this evening I had a message from Wonderwatt saying it couldn't communicate with the inverter.
I checked the GE remote log for errors and found

2025-10-03 19:45:46 Server Dongle Firmware Version Inverter Timeout -1 Automated Maintenance
2025-10-03 19:15:40 Server Dongle Firmware Version Inverter Timeout -1 Automated Maintenance

Any idea what this is?
Is it just GE checking what version the dongle has or is it trying to install an update?

You'll find these every day. They are some probing that GE have enabled for some reason they haven't explained. These are in my logs...

You also might find apparent spurious register read requests. These occur when an external agent that doesn't use the API updates a register and is the way GE are keeping their portal values correct. I don't think their method is foolproof so always do a refresh of a register if you want to know what it contains.

A Dongle option has appeared on My Inverter in the web portal...

Same here on my Gen 1 Hy5.0. It shows the correct dongle serial number, but Firmware shows - (blank).
So looks like another untested release!

Well spotted, my Gateway is also showing Dongle Serial Number and Firmware Versions all correctly.

Same for my gen1 hy3.6

I believe anyone on Gen1 era equipment (i.e ones that actually have a dongle sticking out of them) the portal can't poll the dongle for the information on firmware as they are too old (or its done differently)
Those Gen2 onwards it should say.

Anyone on with a working dongle firmware version shown, I'm intrigued to know what modbus function code they are using to do this - might be one for you @DD ? As it may help identify how we can talk to the dongle itself and gets its registers.

hoggy I routinely store all modbus traffic from my gen-3 system, in case I wish to analyse it later. I'll have a trawl through and see if anything stands out.

Hi Folks,
I've just stumbled upon the same error messages myself and found this thread after a brief search. Did we conclude we should just ignore them? Mine is a Gen 1 3.6kW inverter and appears to be functioning normally apart from these messages.

hoggy's reply seems logical. I'm leaning towards "sweep it under the carpet".

Anyone doing different?

Thanks.

Gen 2 here. Dongle Firmware Version showing as "---"

Gen 1 here.

My Dongle Firmware Version had shown "---" in the portal up until a couple of days ago when it changed to "102". This coincided with the first overnight update after me plugging in a new WiFi dongle that I had recently purchased as a backup (I updated the MSN.txt file to the original dongle's serial number).

The original dongle is 2021 vintage and the new one is dated 2023.

The original dongle has 77.0 Kb of "System & Reserved" while the new one has only 512 bytes.
Both dongles have 1.0 Kb of "Other" and both have 512 bytes of "Documents".

The new dongle takes around three times longer to boot than the old one but there is apparently no difference in operation once up and running (I have updated both dongles to 5.05T.27(Boot:V1.1.4) ).

Not sure what is going on here but is it possible that the presence or otherwise of a Dongle Firmware Version is down to the age of the dongle rather than the age of the inverter?

The following may or may not be significant ...

Copying the WireLessModule.bin file (version 105) to the new dongle worked as expected and it appeared to perform an update and removed the file afterwards.

Copying the same file to the old dongle did nothing on reboot and it DID NOT remove the .bin file.

Thinking this may be the result of the update having been already installed, I once again copied the .bin file to the new dongle and rebooted. This time it did not appear to perform an update but it DID remove the .bin file???

There is clearly some difference between old and new dongles although they both communicate well with my router and I can swap from one the other without issue.

As an aside, the Dongle Firmware Version did not update from 102 to 105 last night as (according to the remote log) the automatic update did not run! Watch this space.

Now, several days later, I have observed that overnight Dongle Firmware Version / Automated Maintenance has not run since the update from "---" to "102". There are no errors or same value responses showing.

When the Dongle Firmware Version was showing as "---" I was seeing up to three failed update attempts reported per night.
