So far we've been chatting about how to keep systems running etc and we've touched on "where do we go next?" but not much more than that.

This is a thread to discuss that.

I'll kick off with a few observations/preferences....

First - no social media please. ie not Facebook. Even if you were happy with Meta owning everything, some of us have never had a Meta account and won't start now.

Second - no attempting to "run our own forum". The Online Safety Act puts a whole load of requirements on anyone running services like this & any complaint can get you shut down/incur costs. On top of that then someone has to deal with the inevitable spammers/phishers who will get past whatever signup process you put in place & with the OSA then that has to be done rapidly. It is, in short, a massive PITA these days.

Reddit is an option. I'm not a great fan (don't even have an account) but it wouldn't be hard to setup and is at least easy to follow/reference.

@hoggy has a wiki page so files/etc seem to be covered.

Discord could also be an option, but has its own issues.

One thing which would be really beneficial, in my opinion, is finding a way to scrape, archive and make accessible all historic posts/content from the 2x GivEnergy community forums, whilst they are still live.

I have no capacity to do such a thing myself, but there's a wealth of documented knowledge here which would be a shame to lose in an instant...

A good idea in principle; something that is needed. I am not sure about Reddit..is it safe enough...I have seen so much rubbish on the site. I'll follow whatever those wiser (and more knowledgeable) than me suggest.

I have servers and web guys, so putting up a low key forum wouldn't be difficult. But as mentioned above, running a forum, even a low key one, plus security updates, moderation etc isn't trivial. So doable but not ideal. Reddit is pants in parts but some subs are run well and are reliable. We might be best hanging out there. As a minimum, we need a destination asap just in case the plug gets pulled here.

I suspect that even if things do stop for givenergy that the forums will continue for some time later, until such a time that a cloud hosting bill becomes due for payment and then they’ll stop unexpectedly.

So be good to be prepared.

Personally I would vote for Discord, the beta forum runs on Discord, its powerful and has great threading and commenting features. I don’t know how the commercials for setting up a Discord server works, whether we’d need someone to host it or we could use a public Discord server.

In terms of content migration, whilst there’s a lot of great content, maybe there’s only a limited subset that really needs to be preserved, how to reset your wifi dongle, setup the Android app, maybe a few on Home Assistant/Predbat. A lot of what’s on there is repeated issues and our group responses to them - trying to sanitise that, make it succinct and not just a whole copy/paste to another forum would be quite a bit of work.

although I really don't want the hassle, forum.terravolt.co.uk has existed for a few years. I never bothered to open it up for the reason's above but if no other option presents itself and this does disappear then I guess it could be enabled as holding pen.

It's getting close to me being buggered...

waiting on a replacement inverter. no idea if it will turn up, but is needed to get my 9.5kWh brick running again.

If GE do go belly up it looks like I'll be getting my soldering iron out.

What a sad thread...

But kudos to @Vestas and others for being proactive.

I like the idea of keep it simple.

@hoggy already has an excellent Unofficial Givenergy Wiki site https://wiki.terravolt.co.uk/. We could put collateral from the GE knowledge base into here and it would already be sufficient. The key, of course, is working out exactly when the GE site will cease to provide up-to-date information. Is there a minimum effort way to clone a site and keep the clone up to date with additions but not deletions so that when GE pulls the plug, we have all the latest information?

As regards a forum, again, my vote is for simplicity. I don't really see why reddit is a bad option. It exists. It's where individuals discuss topics. It's a low-effort what we want thing, isn't it? I'm sure we'll get some bad actors in a public forum, but I suspect, in the grand scheme of things, GivEnergy users are a small and insignificant bunch. I suspect the bots will find richer targets elsewhere.

There are some massively helpful folk in this forum. Please let's not burden anyone with the chore of running a self-help forum. Let's keep the energy focussed on actual help.

mrand31 I use groups.io for another e-group I am in. It is principally an email listserv / usenet style service. Post a topic, reply and add to it, etc. Predominately email based rather than an online forum so you receive all posts as emails, either one per post or daily/weekly digests.

It is all free, does have a wiki, file and photo sharing, but not really a forum

But typically you'd see a page error - that feels like stuff has been pulled manually. The last waybackmachine snapshot was Jan 24th - but nothing useful there as the links are all to Zoho and not indexed. Hmmm.

So does the portal poll the inverter for data downloads or does it come from the inverter ?
And for folks who perhaps updates to the latest firmware versions for their kit, is it worth the risk for them to try to update now while GE is still going. Given that contact with GE seems to be problematic should the need to sort a firmware update issue. And of course should GE go under then users are dependent on perhaps others having locally stored firmware versions. But that means folks installing essentially untrusted firmware.

The inverter sends its data to the portal every 5 minutes. So if the portal is not there the data just gets lost as the inverter doesn’t store it.

However that is the least of the worries.

I think that the app will stop working completely and the inverter will just carry on with the last set of charge/discharge instructions it was given, repeating forever.

The app certainly won’t be able to view graphs of energy or power as all that data comes from the portal.

But I think it will stop working because when it starts up it connects to the portal to check your account authentication, even in local mode.

So the only option is 3rd party control apps such as the BBC Basic app or Rubikcube app

And for folks who perhaps updates to the latest firmware versions for their kit, is it worth the risk for them to try to update now while GE is still going. Given that contact with GE seems to be problematic should the need to sort a firmware update issue.

I would recommend just not upgrading the firmware. In most cases firmware upgrades are not really necessary for the vast majority of us. Sure they fix bugs but for most people the existing firmware they are running works just fine. I am running BMS 3015 on my batterys for just that reason. I did try later firmware but found some issues with it, so reverted back to the old version.

Plus if you do upgrade the firmware and something goes wrong in the upgrade then getting support to intervene is very lengthy, so why risk it?

geoffreycoan In most cases firmware upgrades are not really necessary for the vast majority of us.

To a simple person like me, a firmware upgrade, is just a software upgrade, only being for the hardware. So there is no reason neccesarily to upgrade the firmware unless it is fixing a problem you experience, or a major security flaw. I don't upgrade all the software updates for my printer (it works fine and prints out tickety-boo) so I view firmware in the same light

NormC good, glad Paul has responded but let's see. It's obviously a difficult time and we're all on tenterhooks. But Giv have landed us here so what do they expect. Normally companies talk to their clients so it would be good to hear from someone senior and then we can stop speculating.

Correct. When I setup a NXDOMAIN DNS response for the load balancing comms servers GE run on AWS then the app will not show any data (live or historical) or control for the inverter.

So basically when the inverter cannot contact the load balancing comms servers then local control via the GE app does not work in any way.

Local control via GivTCP continues to work & @Rubikcube 's app can still contact the inverter.

For those testing this out, its not enough to simply block the inverter IP address from internet access as when you run the app then that'll effectively act as a proxy* and will send data to the load balancing comms servers. That will bypass your firewall rule for the inverter IP address and the app will work.

You need to effectively blackhole the domain name which the dongle looks for on boot - eg send it to 127.0.0.1 if you can't return NXDOMAIN. Firewalling the individual IP addresses of the load balancing comms servers is a bodge but if that's all you can do then fair enough.

*more like a relay than a proxy if you want to be picky

Hi Folks,

This might be a useful wake up call. We need to consider that it is possible that this forum will disappear without notice and before we have all agreed to a new location.
If this happens, I propose we post messages to https://www.reddit.com/r/SolarUK/ until we find each other again and agree on a new location (if indeed required). It's already up and running, it's reasonably friendly. It's freely accessible.

Anyone vehemently disagree?

Vestas What is the list of domains we would have to block? Looking at our NextDNS logs it looks like the portal domain is the only obvious one matching the string givenergy that doesn't relate to the community or the support pages.
I would probably look to block both via DNS and the firewall but only at such time administration is announced - if they do carry on trading Internet connections are a condition of the warranty and will also be needed for DST adjustments.

pwdst Well returning NXDOMAIN isn't the best idea because the dongle will try a reconnect to wifi every 10 minutes which obviously creates packet loss. I'll try feeding it duff data and see what it makes of that.

I'm not going into subdomains here - that's GE's zonefile data and they're unlikely to be happy bunnies if people go posting it in their own forums.

Suffice to say its easy enough to stop the inverter chatting to the internet.

The app is a different matter but is doable - why you'd bother other than for testing I dunno as it'll either say the inverter is offline or it won't proceed past the "getting things ready" screen depending on which endpoint(s) you block.

I would uninstall the app at the point administration was announced and rely on GivTCP and the Rubikcube app.
It might be safest to just block all outgoing traffic from the dongle, but blocking the portal domain DNS lookup would seem sensible in a belt and braces sense.
I am still hopeful that GivEnergy pulls through but I would want to actively opt in to any entity that might take control should the worst occur.

Oh dear it would appear we have a problem... (and we're off-topic so please don't reply to this, its just for info)

The dongle will disconnect/reconnect from wifi every 10 minutes if it can't connect to the server(s).

Simple as that, doesn't matter whether you tell it the domain doesn't exist, send it to a blackhole or firewall it off.

Obviously this means it disconnects at regular intervals & I presume that increases the risk of register corruption significantly - especially for anyone running predbat.

This is the original f/w the dongle came with. I'm not going to try upgrading at this point but if anyone else has then it may be interesting to see if it behaves the same. Pretty sure it will.

I'm pretty sure not all dongles work the same - some use dns, some use(d?) fixed IP.
They didnt point to the same place - IP ones point to everyone's favourite tat retailer (from memory). May also be dobgle firmware dependent.
AIO2 has a sim card also so if you lose WiFi it carries on (and you can send your new WiFi details to it via the sim I think - it's mentioned on a video somewhere.

DD It doesn't. The dongle/inverter is looking for a connection on port 7654 which it won't find on GivTCP.

If the endpoints are blocked* (there's about a dozen of them - some used for the GE app) then the dongle will force a DHCP renewal every 10 minutes. If the system is using wifi then that will cause a disconnect/reconnect every 600 seconds.

*simulating them all being non-existent following GE going bust.

Maxwell Leave it for a while and see what happens. Assuming Windows then just run a ping -t to the inverter from a machine on the LAN and see if you get 3-4 seconds packet loss every 10 minutes. The GE app uses SSL so that is port 443 and won't be blocked.

I don't really have time to test today but I suspect leaving the GE app running in the foreground will keep the dongle happy. Obviously that won't help if GE go bust.

Based on verifiable facts (not social-media claims), there is no solid evidence that GivEnergy is “going bust” or in formal financial trouble. However, there are some signals that could be causing the rumours. The current situation looks like this:

According to the UK company register, Companies House lists GivEnergy Ltd as “Active”, with a registered office in Staffordshire.

  1. There is no credible news reporting layoffs

Recent layoffs trackers and news sources do not list GivEnergy among companies announcing mass redundancies. 

This does not prove zero layoffs, but if there were large-scale job cuts, they would usually appear in:
• trade media
• renewable-energy press
• layoff trackers

None of the available sources report that.

  1. The business has recently been expanding

Recent industry coverage shows expansion rather than contraction:
• GivEnergy opened a UK manufacturing facility in the Midlands in 2024. 
• It also launched a budget battery brand called Polar ESS. 

Companies close to failure usually do not invest in manufacturing sites or new product lines shortly beforehand.

  1. Customer-service complaints are widespread

There are real issues reported by customers, particularly about support response times.

Examples include complaints that:
• calls or emails go unanswered
• support tickets take a long time to resolve
• batteries or systems remain offline while waiting for help 

These problems can create the impression a company is struggling internally even if it is still financially stable.

  1. The rumours appear to originate mainly from social media

Online discussions (e.g., installer groups and forums) show people repeating claims like “they’re going bust” or that installers are switching brands, but these are unverified comments rather than confirmed reporting. 

That type of rumour commonly spreads when:
• support is slow
• stock availability changes

So at the moment: rumours exist, but there is no hard evidence that GivEnergy is collapsing.

The cooperation between GivEnergy and Hive is recent and still officially active. There is no evidence that the partnership has been cancelled or suspended.

What the Hive–GivEnergy partnership actually is

In January 2026, Hive integrated GivEnergy into its “Works With Hive” ecosystem. 

The integration allows:
• GivEnergy battery systems to connect directly to the Hive app
• Users to monitor and manage their battery from the same dashboard as other smart-home devices
• Viewing energy use, cost savings, and carbon data in one place 

Hive’s platform aims to combine multiple low-carbon technologies—such as heat pumps, EV chargers, and solar batteries—from different manufacturers into a single system. 

What this means for the rumours

This partnership actually suggests ongoing cooperation with a major UK energy group, because Hive is owned by Centrica, the parent company of British Gas.

Large companies like Centrica normally:
• perform technical and commercial due diligence before integration
• avoid onboarding suppliers they believe are about to fail

So the partnership being announced recently does not align with claims that GivEnergy is imminently collapsing.

Important nuance

However, the Hive integration:
• is software ecosystem cooperation, not an investment or takeover
• does not guarantee GivEnergy’s financial health

It simply means their hardware works with the Hive platform.

Bottom line

Facts currently available:
• The Hive–GivEnergy integration was announced recently (2026).
• It is still presented as an active partnership.
• No reliable source says it has been cancelled.

Therefore, the Hive cooperation does not support the rumours that GivEnergy is failing.

There are credible reports of multiple waves of layoffs, as well as people jumping before they are pushed. Glassdoor contains multiple references to layoffs and Electric Vehicle Man (who I met at Everything Electric South working on the GivEnergy stand) recently posted a video describing how he and others were made redundant on a video call.
Their accounts have been loss making for a couple of years.
Users have been reporting significant difficulties accessing support for about the same time.
Polar kit no longer appears to be sold in the UK, and there are reports that this has been written off. Most of the wholesalers who did carry it don't list it anymore and I have only found one wholesaler who carries the batteries and one a single model of inverter but none that have both.
Wholesalers no longer appear to carry stock of GivEnergy gear or that stock is being wound down with many items out of stock (see Midsummer Wholesale).
There are reports from former staff that manufacturing of equipment has stopped and this does seem to correlate with the availability at wholesalers.
Most troubling to me is the fact we had the UK field engineer manager doing our battery swap, he had just two staff for the entire UK (hence having him in person) and we got their training Gen 3 5.12kWh battery as a replacement because GivEnergy themselves had no stock.

I have added Givenergy to my Hive app. It claims to be beta but has been reporting the panels, battery (AIO) and house energy consumption graphic accurately for the last two months.
There were early few teething problems (double reporting), but Hive sorted it out remotely and app is now reporting accurately.

There's a "legacy" AWS address it contacts as well as the EC2 instances. Also another IP address in PI space on Linode for ntp. Both appear to be hard coded - ie no lookup.

GivTCP has nothing to do with it & the inverter won't fallback to any other port (or IP address other than the load balancers).

hoggy By any chance do you remember why the G1 Hybrid used to have a 2am automated reboot?

That seems to have been removed back in October 2021 (D450-A450 f/w).

I'm just wondering as I'm sure I've seen a post somewhere (else) which basically says that if the inverter can't contact the comms servers then the dongle reconnects every 10 minutes and after 24 hours the inverter stops working (needs a reboot). Just wondering if that rang any bells as it'd explain an automated restart every 24 hours....

Esphome firmware (esp32 agent for home assistant) can also restart networking if there's no client connection for a while. It's a reasonable strategy for devices which expect to be always-connected, since it's hard to distinguish no-activity from a broken WiFi connection.
For local modbus connections, the dongle sends a keepalive challenge every few minutes, to ensure the client is still there/accessible. Don't know if it does the same for the connection to the server.

SteveCook I'm testing things* now & will report back tomorrow (in a new thread) as I want to see what happens if the system can't contact the comms servers for 24 hours.

GivTCP works fine, I'm not testing Rubikcube's app as I don't have the premium version but the free version can still communicate with the inverter.

*G1 Hybrid, dongle with original f/w (haven't checked version) from 2022. DNS setup to provide NXDOMAIN response (domain doesn't exist) to simulate GE servers no longer existing.

SteveCook HA and Predbat IF you are using givtcp should continue working. The GE Cloud connection from Predbat which goes via the givenergy portal would stop working.

At the moment some people prefer GE Cloud and its also a workaround for people that GivTCP doesn’t work properly for (EMS’s, some inverter firmware such as AIO D620-A620, high voltage/3 phase inverters, etc)

If you’re on an older inverter then givtcp & predbat should be just fine.

hoggy Well I'm running it for 24 hours and basically it can't get to GE or timeservers so we'll see what it does.

I think that it might just have been a summer/winter clock change fallback/failover but that's speculation - inverter/dongle does a ntp sync after boot and when its network interface disconnects/reconnects.

A lot of worry and doom and gloom on socials for GE but nothing from an official source. Yeah EVM made some comments but at the moment everything might just pointing to a reboot! We all know how bad their support services have been and have been for years. A reboot done correctly and quickly might be great for all of us. I'll keep planning my AIO2 setup until something official from Giv bosses is announced. Hopefully they will soon given the amount of social doom and gloom on this.

THALL I hope you're right. The more research we do on alternatives, the more we realise that it's a minefield. Tesla Powerwall is way too restrictive, Sigenergy is full of bells and whistles but already we see support problems and connectivity issues. The closest to Giv but bigger capacity etc is Alpha ESS - but no full house backup available yet.

So Givenergy surviving and thriving would be excellent - but surely they need the right folk in there to do it? Or maybe a takeover? Hopefully we'll hear something soon and we're holding off on replacement until then.

Vestas Looks like the clock will be OK as the system looks for a timeserver at 0.pool.ntp.org rather than anything hardcoded.

The dongle (which runs an ancient version of Unix) uses NTP to set it's time. As far as I can find, the dongle makes no real use of the time. It certainly doesn't pass the time onto the inverter! That would require joined up thinking.

I'll post a thread a bit after 13:00 today but the tl;dr is that GivTCP doesn't handle the 10 minute reconnects at all well & eventually fails to write to the inverter, requiring GivTCP to be restarted.

I run an automation (in the predbat documentation) that checks various aspects of GivTCP health and will restart it automatically if it stops sending data to HA. GivTCP v3 is better in this respect than v2, it auto detects issues itself, but still sometimes needs a helping hand

Never needed to until now - still on 2.4.3 as there's nothing new in terms of G1 inverter features.

Regardless of that, where a ping to the inverter shows its unavailable for 3-4 seconds, GivTCP shows anywhere between 5 and 45 seconds of timeouts every 10 minutes. Its pretty much unusable regardless of what the self run loop timer is set to although the default of 5 seconds is somewhat better than 10-15 seconds. A short self run loop timer setting does increase the likelihood of collisions and corruption though - under normal operation that is.

SimonClarke as has been said before, if the givenergy portal stops working for any reason then anything that uses the portal will stop working, this includes:

  • the givenergy portal itself
  • the givenergy app (as it checks with the portal your account credentials even when making a local mode connection)
  • any cloud connected services such as wonderwatt, my energy optimiser, predbat.com, octopus R&D, Axle VPP, etc

Your only options to control the inverter are a local connection such as GivTCP or GivLocal within Home Assistant or the RubikCube Android app or the BBC basic inverter app (iOS, Mac, PC, Android). More testing to be done to see how resilient these local connections are if the inverter is failing to ‘phone home’ to the givenergy portal. My guess is that they will work OK

Rubikcube As far as I know, that library does respond to the heartbeat (line 342). I use that underlying library (without GivTCP) and I think it responds as required. (Though GivTCP didn't take my latest changes, so I can't be sure they're quite the same.)

And AFAIK, not responding to the heartbeat will close that client connection, not restart the whole wifi connection.

The newer async one (the same one v3 givtcp uses) seems to handle it OK (I think? Like DD I don't actually use GivTCP just the library)

Maxwell I use it quite often as a quick alternative to Home Assistant. It works very well, gives live data straight off your inverter, and can be used to start/stop charges, calibration, etc.
What it doesn't have that Rubik Cube's has is the data collection facilities, nor the ability to program schedules that are sent to the inverter at the right time (to circumvent the limited charge slots on older inverters). But for basic operations and checking the inverter health, its perfect.
Plus works on iOS and Android.

I believe that warning you report is also something I noticed on another home automation site. Perhaps one of the variations of givtcp. Can’t remember the exact detail but this particular code did give that warning. And I guess that would be something any non ge app/code provider would want to include particularly where it allows you to make changes to inverter settings.

wrighar Good for Richard and whilst @SimonClarke finds the ui not the most initiative and I must agree that it isn’t. But it works and you can set your charge times and times export etc. Which for basic user like me is all I really need to do. You do have to tap on the screen to make the changes. See below. So first image is the basic screen with second image when you have clicked on the entry you want to change. So the first image shows that timed charge is set up. And the second image shows what happens when you click on yes on that row. You get the option of typing No and then return to change it. If you want to leave it unchanged I found it best to click on a blank bit of the page or change page and come back to it. In my experience that will restore the previous value that was set.

I've been on a similar thought process.
I have an iPhone for the GE App & the Portal runs on my Windows Asus laptop. I also looked into getting Rubikcube, providing I can get my non IT head around the software!! So I guess I could run this on my Asus. However, the question is what do I do about the App for my i-phone? Guess I'll have to buy a cheap Android phone to run it on since it's not i-phone compatible? My only other concern is that according to the info I've read the Rubikcube App was originally written for Gen 1 systems & that it may not work or be able to work or control features of the later Gen2 (mine) or 3 systems.
I'm still not sure what is the best solution to future proof my Gen 2 Hybrid system is if GE goes go under & all support, Apps & portal disappear. I want to have an autonomous means of controlling my system that does not need or rely on the Internet, Cloud or someone else's servers.
I guess replacement of the Inverter & batteries is obviously an option (expensive) but only as last resort. And that won't necessarily solve the local autonomous control either. My system is (fingers crossed) running OK at the moment but there's no guarantee that it or GE will out last it's warranty period.
That said, I would like a larger Inverter so a replacement Inverter & battery is my only option if I want to do this.
I'm still undecided.

Also, would there be any issues with a direct Ethernet connection to my Inverter via my router or, would I have to ditch that & connect the laptop directly to the Inverter instead? Just thinking about the wiring changes that might be needed to my existing setup.

Currently I have an hardwired ethernet / LAN connection from my laptop via a Fritz repeater in my office, via WiFi to my Fritz Router in our lounge & then via a single LAN cable from the Router to my Inverter, Zappi & Edi via a 4-way switch in my garage.
After Inverter Wifi issues when I changed broadband suppliers I ditched the Wifi connection for a hardwired ethernet - which has bee far better.
Anyhoo, any info or pointers would be appreciated.

SteveCook Problem is that with the 350% increase in memory prices in the last 6 months Raspberry Pi's are no longer cheap - £60 for 2GB (bare minimum HA/GivTCP now requires), £80 for 4GB, £100 for 8GB and £130 for 16GB.

You could buy a cheapo android tablet for less than that & run Rubikscube app.

I'm retired too. However, I do have a very capable son who's a bit of an IT / computer wizard (Technical Solution Consultant for a large computer firm, ServiceNow qualified & a BSc Hons in Games Design).
However, I'd rather not have to rely on him to solve all my IT problems - if you know what I mean!! A dad has to try & keep up with modern stuff help out their kids but it's pretty obvious that some of this modern tech has left me behind over the last 10 years & is one of the reasons I decided to retire at the end of 2019.
As it happens my son has probably got a Raspberry Pie kicking about somewhere in his IT cupboard so this option may not be completely off the table if I can swallow my pride & ask him for some help!

CGoode if you haven’t tried the Free Inverter app then I would try that first as a zero cost option. Albeit the user interface isn’t the most intuitive. But try it and see if it meets your needs. It works on iPhone. Sorry @Rubikcube not trying to diminish your profit margin.

I do have an old NoKia & probably 10 other old android mobile phone's (including a "beam me up Scotty" Motorola flip) - but none of them are smart!!!! I do have an old i-phone but that's no use for Rubikcube. I'm looking to keep the cost down on this whole exercise because I suspect that the only way I'm going to solve this problem, & my desire to have a larger Inverter & whole house off grid back-up, is to scrap my existing Inverter & batteries & start again with hopefully a more stable manufacturer - are there any??
I know it's not going to be a cheap solution because I've already had a rather optimistic & jaw dropping quote of £18.9k for a Sigenergy 8kW system with whole house back up (subject to a site survey). That's not going to happen so I need my existing system to soldier on for a while longer with or without GE going under.

As long as you are on the same network as the inverter and there’s no subnetting or similar going on then you will be able to use the rubikcube or bbc basic inverter apps, they don’t care about wired or Wi-Fi, just need the inverter IP address

Got a message from a neighbour saying “show off” as we were watching the winter olympic curling while our village was off! Perhaps you could get that added to your existing system. We can sit in the lounge and watch TV and browse the web etc in the warm. We can have cold drinks. If we want hot tea, we have to boil and pan of water on the gas cooker, as I kept EPS circuity below Gen1 Hy5.0 limits. I put a manual changeover switch in, so whilst this EPS CU is always on, I can switch it to grid fed if the inverter ever needs to be taken out of operation for maintenance etc

Another good idea. I already have a separate CU in the garage next to the main CU. This was installed when I had the EV charger put in. I also have a bunch of spare ways in my main CU as this was replaced as part of the Solar install. The possibility exists therefore to do some circuit reorganisation & put in a manual or auto changeover switch as an interim solution but limited to the 3.6kW output of my Inverter. Hummm. Definite food for thought.

But we have to manually ensure that big ticket items like the oven etc are switched off before we make the switch to ensure the house load is within the available solar/battery/inverter capacity. For those considering my app but not (yet) having a real android device:

It is possible to run Android in a Virtual Machine on Windows / Mac / Linux by downloading Android Studio (it's free) https://developer.android.com/studio

Follow the instructions for downloading and installing, then follow the tutorial for writing your first app. When you choose an emulator, make sure to pick one with Play Store included.

Then login to the emulator with a google account and you can use it to download and run whatever apps you want.

Android (like all software) seems to get bigger with each release. If you have 16GB (or more) of ram you should be fine. If you only have 8GB, choose Android 8 for the emulator.

That’s very similar to our setup. We had an extension to the house and all the power for the extension which includes the kitchen and electric showers is on a separate consumer unit directly connected to the Henley blocks after the grid meter.
That left the original house consumer unit. I had the FIT solar array feed and hot tub moved out of the house consumer unit to their own CU, so the house CU now just has a few ring main and lighting circuits, and had that wired into the inverter EPS connection. It has a manual changeover switch so I can switch the house between grid and inverter EPS fed, but it’s left permanently on EPS mode.
In the event of an extended power cut I’d need to run an extension lead to keep the fridge running. And for boiling a kettle in a power cut I’d have to get a camping stove or the travel kettle out, as the normal kettle pulls 3kW, but I have “good enough” home backup without the expense of a gateway.

Maxwell It's unfortunately a bit complicated... I was actively developing the modbus library, hoping that it would be a standalone library that GivTCP would use as a module. Unfortunately, instead GivTCP took a snapshot and then started adding features (more registers / hardware configurations) there instead. So standalone development rather ground to a halt. I think GivTCP may have access to NDA documents describing the registers ? I don't, so I am a bit hampered in that regard.

I was developing and preparing patchsets in https://github.com/divenal/givenergy-modbus-async/tree/dev6 (which is probably the version I'm currently running locally)

I think what's really surprised me, watching all these threads, is that GE must have seen them, they must know the chatter - and have made zero effort to come and either a) close down the discussion, b) respond, c) remove the community from their portal links.

If none of this is true - if there aren't any risks - then why let a community which is tightly coupled to your portal and all customers can access continue to chunter on like this? All they are doing is letting the rumours propagate.

Come out ... put a post up saying it's all nonsense and why - have someone respond on each thread popping up.

Silence from GE just reenforces the noise.

I’m not entirely sure there is that many people left in there to push out comms. LinkedIn shows most Givenergy employees are either now Ex employees or “open to work”

hoggy and there never have been that many Givenergy employees that engage with this forum. Occasional visits from Paul L, and there was a flame war that started last year that givenergy did intervene on and suspend the thread, but I can’t remember when else I saw any Givenergy staff on here.

I suspect the people that created this forum, a bit like the knowledge base, left ages ago and nobody maintains it, and few even remember it exist. Look how long it took to get the image upload feature fixed, that was semi broken for over a year?

I don’t have facebook, but what’s the situation on the givenergy FB group?

hoggy they're still doing great work and pretty much the only "formal" Giv help that's accessible now. You hear about the odd person who managed to get some support going direct, but the large majority hit a brick wall and seemingly never hear back. Until they fix that, it's going nowhere unfortunately. My guess is that there's just a small core of folk left who are hoping to transition to whatever is coming next.
