8.2 Battery and 5kw Hybrid inverter - No solar panels?

I'm looking for some advice - I have the 8.2 Battery and 5kw Hybrid inverter on order with 5.6Kw Solar Panels on order.
Apparently the DC optimisers for the panels are delayed so I want to know if the Battery and Inverter can be installed without solar panels, with a view to putting them on at a later date when the stock arrives.

I had originally planned to have a "battery only" system - charging it at off peak times and discharging it throughout the day. Our daily usage is under 10kWh per day and we can easily shift high power appliances to off peak.

It seems entirely possible from various youtubes, but I can't find a definitive answer to this on the Givenergy website.

Hybrid inverter needs DC input (eg: solar panels) to charge the battery or produce AC output. Battery only systems need an AC inverter.

I have almost an identical system, with everything in place at the moment. 😀

I might be confusing things, but a couple of questions: Why do you need optimisers? And why don't you install the PV without them, and add if/when necessary?

That is what my installer suggested because of a small possible shadowing on a couple of panels. Installed the panels, and monitored them for over two weeks (with the scaffolding in place). There was no issue, so they just took down the scaffold.

The panels will be on both sides of the roof, so half would be semi-shaded and half not. I guess I could have 2 strings, but having looked into optimisers it seems they will help to give per panel diagnostics as an added benefit. I would rather each panel run at it's best rather than all the panels running at their worst.

Scaffolding will be needed all around the house and it will already be annoying the neighbour when it is fitted, let alone having to come back and fit the optimisers. Might as well do a proper job once in my view.

OK, I thought this would be possible with Hybrid+Battery as it can top up the battery from the grid.

If that were the case, how would a hybrid inverter with battery ever work at night? Is it not the whole point of having the battery, that it can power your house when the sun is not shining?
The hybrid inverter allows charging of the battery according to a time schedule, so usually at cheap rate at night, then auto discharge to meet the household load outside these hours. This feature is typically used in Winter, when the solar panels (eventually fitted) are not generating enough to cover a whole day of household consumption.

Assuming your panels are evenly split over East and West facing roof areas (say 8 + 6 panels), then you should make use of the 2 string inputs to the inverter (1 for East, 1 for West). Each PV string input will be optimised by the inverter as the solar gain shifts during each day.
Unless there is additional shading that affects individual or just a few panels, there will be little/no benefit from having an optimiser on each panel.

Simon_C Not sure I understand your question. You charge the battery during the day when the sun is shining and discharge at night when it isn't. Not disputing the hybrid inverter can do battery DC to house/grid AC at any time. Not disputing that you can do AC grid to DC battery charging either but I wonder if it is possible to commission a hybrid inverter system without solar PV and if it is, would it need re-commissioning when solar was added.

I just had a chat with the installers, as the optimisers may not have been that necessary. They reckon they have found stock and are happy doing the install with or without them. Cheers for the information.
I can't believe how little information there is on battery only installation as this is the best way to save money on bills at the moment.

Your original statement was very black and white in stating that the hybrid inverter needs DC input. I just confirmed that was not the case.
Good point about the commissioning. That is between @IanMac and the installer, if the solar panels are installed at a later date.

Simon_C Yes my mistake. The hybrid inverter needs DC input (from solar or battery) to produce AC output but IS capable of DC battery charging from AC grid input (as well as DC solar input).

At least some panels have a diode built in, which makes optimisers superfluous. Trina vertex come to mind.
