Hello everyone,
A simple question for you all, I'm sure!
Is it possible to use the "ECO" and "Timed Export" settings together? That is to say, the battery dynamically charges and discharges to meet my household demand and minimise import from the grid, except during the peak rate export period when the battery discharges to the grid down to a predefined level (say 40%). I have been able to enable both settings but when I refresh the "My Inverter" pane, one or other of the settings has reverted to disabled (usually the "Timed Export setting").
I suppose that means it's one or the other?

No... but 'Timed Discharge' is 'Timed Export' but with ECO on rather than off.

Or at least it is in my (hybrid-gen3 inverter). I am told that older inverters behave differently, but I've not seen a description of other behaviour on here. The description of 'timed discharge' makes it sound like it does something different, but for me, the only difference between timed discharge and timed export is the setting of the eco flag.

When using the portal settings, the UI does seem to have trouble keeping the different modes up to date with what's really on the inverter. (see, for example, https://community.givenergy.cloud/d/4012-disabling-a-timed-discharge-is-causing-eco-mode-to-go-off )

DD, thank you so much for taking the time to reply! My understanding is a little clearer!
So if I set the "Discharge To" slider to 20% (in "Timed Discharge"), will the timed discharge stop at that point and the inverter return to "ECO" mode, continuing to use the remaining battery power to meet household demand. Or will the battery remain at 20% until recharged and the demand be met from the grid?

Unfortunately not. The eco flag will stay on, but once it reaches 20%, it will hold until the end of the discharge time period, then return to eco mode. So eg if you ask to discharge from 4pm to 7pm, but with a cutoff of 40%, but that is reached at 6pm, it will effectively pause the battery until 7pm, at which time it will resume eco mode. Which unfortunately means you'd end up importing from the grid to cover house consumption between 6pm and 7pm, which is the last thing you want to do.

Or at least I think that's what happens - I don't tend to use this mode (for that reason). I tend to script these sorts of things, so at 4pm I'd get the current state of charge, estimate at what time it would reach 40%, and then set the end time to that.

Yep! That's exactly what happened, except that "ECO" remained disabled!

Ged Hmm - that's interesting. I've seen various comments on here about the eco flag getting turned off after a timed battery discharge.

If you look at the activity log at the bottom of the remote-control section on the portal, does it actually record a request to turn eco mode off? Or did it get turned off spontaneously by the inverter.

One other bit of kit you could add to your armoury, if you have android, is the @Rubikcube inverter monitor app. That can connect directly to the inverter, like the official app, but can show more of the internal registers directly. With this, you could see at what point the eco flag got turned off. (I'm not quite sure how good the app is at refreshing status. First time you go into the battery settings, you get a 'just a sec' pause while it reads the registers. But not subsequently, so they're presumably cached. Possibly safer to quit and restart.)
There is another third-party app that runs on iOS which probably gives similar info. (Haven't tried it myself, though I've heard it runs on mutiple platforms.)

ECO means (try to) output just enough power to meet demand.
EXPORT means output as much power as possible.

With that definition they are logically exclusive. You probably know that export isn't always possible; if you have a 5kW inverter and you house is using 6kW, you will be importing 1kW regardless of eco, export, or whatever settings.

Well... yes, but "timed export" means, at some configured time in the future, export at a fixed power rate (doesn't have to be max). That shouldn't necessarily mean that I have to give up ECO now. Similarly, it only exports for a fixed period, and I should be able to go back to ECO after that.
