I just got an alert from the GivEnergy app and that also appears in my account notifications saying that one of my inverters has finished calibration “Thanks for waiting while your inverter calibrated its batteries. Your inverter will now function as normal”

Only,

  • there wasn’t a start calibration message, the last one of those was 9 months ago with an end calibration later that day
  • Predbat didn’t go into calibration mode which it does when the inverter is calibrating
  • In fact for the last half hour the inverters were charging the batteries in a slightly lower Agile import rate, and they are now in Eco mode, discharging the batteries to the home as the Agile rate has increased
  • SoC graph looks what I would expect, its drained to empty with house load but then didn’t get charged up to full; currently on % SoC on that inverter

So all the signs are that this is a random and false message. Anyone else had similar, any ideas?

Just woken up to find the same message. Battery appears to have charged and discharged as per Predbat's plan rather than the usual calibration cycle.

But I did have a similar false notification error a while back, possibly early 2024.

geoffreycoan same here. Looking in the logs the battery type also toggled between lead acid and liP04 🤷🏻‍♂️

Goshiki2 I just checked, my notification was at 23:00:21, and there was nothing unusual in the Home Assistant entity history at that time, just the usual inverter time changing, and the battery type didn’t change at all yesterday. 🤷‍♂️

Love how they do all this on a Friday night. Just right in the support sweet spot in case anything goes wrong.

Yep rule for my team's never ever ever do releases on Friday unless you absolutely have to!!!

Thursday or Tuesday if possible... After testing in your UAT environment!!!

Windy Miller Looking at my inverter remote control log, I see a very similar pattern to you on both yesterday’s and today’s “calibration finished OK” time

Loads and loads (about 2 and a half pages) of external change detected, things like Calibration type, Battery type, EM115 meter type, Company code, DC discharge 2 time, BMS version, EM115 meter direction - all change to different values and then change back again

I suspect that this is why we are getting the random calibration finished messages when no calibration is started because the portal is detecting that the calibration register changes to Off, having previously changed to a random value.
Looks like the GivEnergy code that detects changes occurring on our inverters is glitching, determine things have changed when they haven’t, and then detecting that things have changed back when actually all the time they remain unchanged.

I was going to say it was weird that I have had these calibration messages twice from one of my inverters but not at all from the other, but I just went and looked at the change log for the other inverter and this afternoon a (different) load of inverter values changed and changed back again, but didn’t include the battery calibration one which is why I didn’t receive a calibration message

geoffreycoan Were this happening to me, bearing in mind this seems to have started after the GE server had its "glitch" & exposed multiple services/logins to the internet which it shouldn't then I'd be disconnecting my inverter from the internet until GE explain exactly what the hell is going on.

Worth noting that they aren't allowed to make changes to YOUR equipment without your consent, which they don't have.

Edit - as you can see these forums still aren't working correctly as that should have read geoffreycoan , not [unknown]. Edit2 - and that's changed when I edited it. Something is very much NOT OK with GE's server.

Do you think their servers/system "lost" all data about systems installed and they are trying to recover it?

I did notice that the portal was now reporting DC discharge slot 2 had an end time which I am positive it never had before as I only ever use slot 1 with Predbat.

I’ve written slot 2 back to 00:00 to stop any unplanned discharging

No more random status change messages today

I've not had a single server read so it's either random or excludes Gen1 older FW.
Some of those registers I don't think from memory apply to my Gen1 gear (although I'd really like their full register names list as it's much more coherent than my Mandarin translations)

Could be related to the imminent deployment of RAM registers to combat the eeprom write issue. A collecting of current state to write back to the inverter after the update.

Except that I am seeing the same pattern:

  • a load of inverter registers changing from current value to Unknown or random values
  • then the same set changing back to the original values

If it happened just the once I could understand it as data collection from the inverters, but 4 times?

It would be interesting to know how many people who are affected logged into the portal/forum when the certs were invalid and pointing at other IP addresses on Friday.

Also it'd be interesting to see if its everyone on SSO (which I'm not) as the deadline for installers switching to it is today (their "legacy" logins won't work as of midnight today).

Edit - I'd be disconnecting the inverter from the portal/GE servers if this was happening to me.

Robgy You need some form of local control (givtcp/one of the inverter apps) then you setup a firewall rule on the router to prevent all incoming/outgoing traffic from the inverter's IP address. That way you can control the system but GE can't.

I used this in 2023 when the portal decided to restart inverters every 5 minutes after the battery firmware was updated. Dodged something like 150 restarts that way - while GE were still claiming all was OK (they changed their minds about 18 hours later).

TX200 No you're not. You're quite entitled to stop unauthorised changes to your equipment regardless of what it says in GE's warranty.

Edit - I think @Rubikcube has firewall rules which prevent GE changing the firmware for example.

Setting up this type of packet firewall, I would say is an ADVANCED networking project. Simply blocking the portal connection is easier, but stops any information at the portal which will make figuring out what is going on here more difficult.

I have not had any of the messages, and nothing unexpected in the logs. I suspect this may somehow be related to GivTCP.

Rubikcube Yeah my solution isn't as simple as I said above but I use a Mikrotik CCR router.

About all you can do on a consumer router is block access.

Note that I'm not suggesting people block GE forever, simply until they explain what the hell they're doing to other people's property without permission. Not an unreasonable request really.

to clarify, there isn’t any sign that GivEnergy are making any changes to our inverters at all

All of this noise in the inverter change log is ‘external change detected’, i.e. it is the GivEnergy Portal retrieving config settings from our inverter, noticing that they are different to what the Portal thinks the data is last set to, so hence it is as far as the portal is concerned an ‘external change’, and updating the portal records with detail of what the inverter is now set to.

And then seconds later there is another series of messages where the portal decides again that the inverter config data doesn’t match what it now thinks it is, and records another set of external changes.

It appears to me to be glitches in the GivEnergy portal data collection routine. From what I see in the givtcp data in Home Assistant the data isn’t changing.

Of course if someone from givenergy support could confirm what is actually happening it would be good to know …

No it is very misleading, but they are all marked as “external change detected” which is the portal realising that the inverter has settings different from what the portal thinks they should be, and then updating the portal copy with the inverter settings.

The changes occurring are all in the portal copy of the inverter data

As mentioned. These are some strange portal glitch incorrectly interpreting routine messages from the inverter.

No need to all start reconfiguring your routers.

The devs are looking why. Also seems to be linked to users using GivTCP.

Might be related to those that have firmware with CRC / 0x11 address. Not running GivTCP mine do not experience any of these server reads.

Just wondering if someone wrote a program to send fake messages to the portal appearing to originate from their inverter like this: for i in 0 to 359; send set register i to 999. Then could the register descriptions be extracted from the external change messages logged?

Its interesting how GivTCP gets blamed without anything said as to why that conclusion is reached. The registers that have just suddenly started changing across multiple people’s accounts are things that GivTCP doesn’t even touch - company code, EM115 type, etc

I’m sticking with it being shonky portal code until evidence is provided otherwise

Just read this thread and checked my logs - yes, multiple entries for 'external change detected', all on the same day/minute/second (2025-01-22 21:02:24). I don't use GivTCP or any other automation, so The Dragon's theory would appear to be faulty...
And looking back in the logs there was a similar episode back in November (2024-11-23 23:11:06).
Both the 23 November and the 22 January sessions were all Read Only events, so maybe it's just the server checking up on its data?

Especially when this started after someone in GE screwed up the zonefile, the certs and the firewall for their AWS servers. Presumably GivTCP is responsible for that as well....

Not sure whats going on recently but lot of EPS messages as well, the one highlighted is what GE done and that is over 2,000 lines away from the rest lol

If I remember correctly EPS stuff customers cannot do at all.

One excel page fullhd view I can get 3-4 days wort of changes but there are days where one day wont fit on 40 lines and I don't use Predbat.

This is with multiple charge slots and my idiot self accidentally setting charge slot 10 time instead of discharge 1 on top of fiddling with the charge time when I wanted battery to hit 4% lol
