ectoplasmosis I can’t remember for absolute certainty as it was more than 3 years ago this happened …
I’ll share the entire story for context.
I have two 5kW inverters and due to the silly prices my installer wanted to charge for batteries, my installation included only the one 5.2kWh battery which they installed (on inverter number 1).
I separately ordered a 9.5kWh battery from ITS technologies but then realised that I’d need a DNO approval for its installation and my installer needed to commission it so I got the installers to do the paperwork. They advised connecting the 9.5 on the same inverter as the 5.2, which they did. So now 9.5 as primary and 5.2 as secondary, both on inverter 1, no batteries on inverter 2.
What I found in the summer was that both inverters would repeatedly shutdown, sometimes for hours at a time and I was loosing lots of solar generation as a result.
Couldn’t work out whether this was normal behaviour or not, and if not, what the problem was. In hindsight I figured out that with one inverter having no battery connected to it meant that all of its solar was being converted to AC and that was pushing up the grid voltage and causing both inverters to shutdown. My hypothesis was that if I moved the 5.2 onto the second inverter then the solar generation would have ‘somewhere to go’ and it would reduce the ‘grid voltage clipping’ I got.
So one night after the sun had gone down I powered the inverters down and rewired the 5.2 from the 9.5 on inverter 1 to inverter 2.
As you say, the battery self registers on the inverter and portal and it worked OK. It made a massive difference to the grid voltage issue and now I would only get much smaller inverter shutdowns. I did get the DNO to investigate and they re-tapped my transformer tor reduce the grid voltage which improved things further. [And side-note I am part way through the same process with my DNO again as grid voltage has crept up again]
Anyhow, what were the issues with self-moving the 5.2 battery from one inverter to another?
My recollection was that the inverter and battery worked fine together, would solar and grid charge OK. In the app though when I drilled down into the inverter details to see the battery It showed the wrong data. I think it showed the 9.5 details under both inverters and didn’t show the 5.2 details anywhere.
[again, hard to remember, but I quite probably initially moved the 9.5+5.2 battery chain from inverter 1 to inverter 2 to try to see if the shutdown problem was caused by a fault on inverter 1. Splitting the batteries across the two inverters was one of a series of things I did to try to work out what the problem was and fix it]
Givenergy support eventually sorted the problem out for me, I think they recommissioned both inverters and said that the registration data on the portal was corrupt and the battery was registered on both inverters. It did take quite a while to sort out as the corruption wasn’t obvious.
