Hi,

Im getting reduced PV output despite clear blue sky, I’ve an 18 panel array (6.6kW) coupled with a Gen 2 5kw Inverter and 9.5kWh battery.

Bright sunshine - not a cloud all day.

ED2248G624

All looks ok until approx 11:30.

Any Clues?

Haddock Over heating?

What is your export cap? Might be worth asking GE what your inverter export cap is set to. From 11:30 to 1:30 it looks like the inverter is clipping to 3.68kw (default export limit).

What direction does your array face? From 2pm the output is much lower which suggestions my above idea is wrong.....

Sunny but relatively cool and the inverter is in the garage so even cooler.

And it’s doing the same again today.

I saw another post on Facebook which looked similar which was caused by the grid voltage being too high - I had a look and don’t think this is the case for mine.

Could anyone from GE have a look for me please?

Haddock I would check with GE support (email or web chat monday to friday) and ask them to check your export limit on your inverter too.

Looking again at “Inverter data” through the portal the voltage is up at 253/254v - reading one of the facebook posts it’s suggested that could be the issue.

I get exactly that on every sunny day. Grid voltage around 248/250v, inverter voltage 253/254v. As soon as the battery is full solar production drops to very little. It effectively means I am unable to export as I assume the upper voltage limit is being reached and causing the reduced solar production. Intend to contact DNO about the grid voltage and see where we go from there.

Givenergy are saying it’s a bug in the Gen2 firmware - not voltage related as no error messages.

I get this exact behavour. Battery gets to 90% and above and my generation gets throttled to 500w. And also it doesnt seem to want to utilise the battery when its at this percentage

Haddock good to know. I have been trying so many different things to try and ‘fix’ this. Even bought a small fan to keep inverter cooler. But yesterday I finally realised that all my issues happen when battery is at around 90% or higher.

  1. PV generation is reduced. More and more as battery get closer to 100%. E.g. with battery 75%, PV = 4kWh but if battery was full or close to full, PV would typically be around 500W
  2. Battery will not cover load requirements, grid import kicks in. E.g. this morning battery 20%, put kettle on and battery delivers missing W, no grid used. If battery was fullish then grid would deliver most of missing W.
    @TheDragon (GivEnergy) are you aware of these issues? I plan to discharge battery if it gets too full to try and manage this until we get a fix. Cloudy day today so not going to be an issue!

@TheDragon (GivEnergy) Would it be possible to get the update on our system? Really frustrating to see all this sun and not being able to make the most of it. Our battery is normally full by 11 or 12 and then the solar generation drops down to 400 or 500 w. Our serial number is EA2302G75.

I'm also having this issue. Glad I've found out it's a know issue - this is my first summer since install and seems my system has now hit its optimal performance.

@TheDragon (GivEnergy) I can see you've had lots of requests, if you did have the time to push through the update to me too, it would be really appreciated ED2151G080. But also happy to wait for firmware update if the number of requests is getting out of hand.

Dom66 same here, only 24hrs in, but can see a big difference. PV power much higher and another issue where my battery would charge to 100% and then drift down and idle at 97% seems to have gone too.

I have tried to wait patiently for the inverter firmware to be available for download from the portal, but I see the same “struggle to get going in the morning” for my two PV strings, cycling between ramping up and collapsing, something which I believe is improved in the latest firmware. Yesterday provided a good illustration:

Yes the issue you have Single string limit, is fixed in the new FW, Unlocked PV power limit (Providing you remain within the current and voltage limits)

@TheDragon (GivEnergy) I contacted support on Friday and they upgraded firmware for me and yesterday the PV output was much better, however, I now have a new issues, our timed battery charge during off peak is no longer working. I tried disabling and re-enabled but still no difference.
Any ideas on how to fix?
Anyone else having same issue?

anthony I had a similar issue. I believe it relates to register changes and the need to reset the registers. I had a timed charge set, the SoC was > than the target and the inverter held the charge but did not use the existing charge to power the house over night i.e. it ran from grid and in the morning, my SoC was still at 88% (target was 20%).

I also noticed the "AC Change Enable" was not set but the times were. I did a "Reset To Defaults" through the portal and then set the values again.... and double checked via Remote Control reading of the registers. This seems to have worked, although I have added a caveat in the other firmware thread.

4monks Thanks for reply. Yes was just reading the posts in beta to see if anyone had same issue. Mine was doing same as yours, just holding battery at the current charge level and using grid instead. I'll try the reset to defaults and see if that works.

anthony Two things I noted:
1) The second day "worked" - I thought Paul had reset it for me; I noticed the "Timed Charge" times were correct, but "AC Charge Enable" was not set. I did a full reset to defaults myself and set the values again - then it was ok and double double checked in remote.
2) It appears to have worked for the last three days i.e. use the battery over night and not charged (as battery SOC was always > Target SOC overnight as expected) but I do see an unexplained minor blip around the time the Timed Charge ends that I was not seeing pre-909.

@4monks Just done a full reset twice as got error first time saying inverter offline, confirmed registers were reset, then enabled a timed charge for 08:40 to 08:45 just to see if it made a difference, but again battery usage just stopped and it just pulled from grid for that 5 mins.
I saw on beta thread Paul was talking about a full factory reset, did he do that on yours maybe?
Maybe I should try rebooting the inverter to see if that helps.

anthony I'm not sure he did - I could see not evidence of it other than the AC Charge Enable was not on. I suspect the inverter offline was when it was rebooting. I got the same and just waited for it to come back.

anthony Very weird trying the same as you... although it's been fine over night, I set a quick daytime window and although the solar is > house load, during the timed window, solar -> battery, grid import is happening even thought SOC > target SOC....

@4monks just tried inverter reboot, then reset values to defaults, confirmed in remote control, set new timed change period for 09:05 to 09:10, again just to test if working but no difference. Just stops using battery completely, no charge from grid or solar.

anthony So I am seeing expected behaviour at night (no solar) but like you, having just tested it, I am not seeing incorrect behaviour during the day with solar > load and Target SOC > SOC with a Timed Window. Can you see if you see expected behaviour tonight and see what Paul comes back with tomorrow?

I called Givenergy support on Thursday to ask about firmware upgrade but they didn't actually do anything at the time as far as I was aware. I later saw that export exceeded the DNO limit and called again. I was told that when a staff member "updated the grid code" (although they didn't tell me they were doing this), they didn't realise that the DNO limit was overwritten/disabled. Not wanting to teach grandmother to suck eggs, put presumably the reset just done doesn't interfere with DNO export limit (or you've got that angle covered)?

1) The attached shows the daytime Timed Charge behaviour not working before and after the grid reset and also an example of the "blip" at the end of the night time Timed Charge which appears to work.
2) It might be work nothing the blip also coincides with the appearance of solar which is also present in 1) so perhaps the blips I've mentioned are actually a small subset example of the daytime timed charge issue i.e. timed charge when solar is present.

The attached shows the GivTCP PV, load and import data for the second 10:15 - 10:20 - the second test window I ran after the register reset.

TheDragon (GivEnergy) hi, after your kind upgrade to 909, I am seeing unwanted behaviour when the battery is full, and the inverter hits its AC limit. The oversized PV is hitting 5kW, full battery, and then according to HA, it is cycling the battery, 117 w in and then 413 w out, on a 6/7 minute cycle. About 0.05 kWh in and out. will post a picture when I can get to pc.

Is this the oscillations mentioned in the beta thread, needing a register clear out ?. Also slightly concerned that my battery is sitting at 10.07 kWh remaining capacity ? So during these oscillations it is rocking between 10.07 and 10.12 kWh.
At this exact moment, the PV has dropped to 4900 w, and the oscillations stop. So it is directly related to the inverter having to throttle the PV.

I'm not sure if I'm experiencing the same issues that other are. But I do seem to get lower than expected solar output on clear days. For example I've seen my solar output peek at over 4.4kw on a cloudy day (a couple of days ago from a 4.5Kw setup.) for brief periods of time but on a less cloudy day or clear skies, it sometimes seems to peek out at around 3.3kw. Although, I'm also not even sure if my inverter is gen 2? (SD2210G062)

To my question on the above statement about auto deployment quoted above. Does that mean it will automatically be installed without me having to do anything at all, or does it mean it'll appear in the software tab for me to install the same as the battery firmware update is currently showing. Also any idea how far off this is either way.

We seem to be having the same issues with reduced PV generation even on sunny days with no clouds - inverter software currently version 906 so looks like we need the update as well please - ED2248G482.

Not sure if this will also affect the sharp drop offs in the battery levels which we seem to be experiencing every couple of weeks or so? Battery can drop from about three quarters charged to 0% in less than 5 minutes (last night for example, battery was at 67% at 23:53 then 0% at 23:58). Battery firmware version 3009.

I too am wondering whether my system is as it should be. 3.2kw installed capacity facing SSW at 200°. 9.2kwh battery charges perfectly and Solic 200 diverts to immersion as expected yet PV peaks rarely exceeds 2.6kw even under clear blue skies. Inverter SA2235G494.

TownSolar that’s about the ratio for thermal effects. Our 6kW system (which gave 5.95 peak in February) is 4.5kW now, nice & smooth just lower. Our roof angle suits shoulder season sun height better too, which from my pov is better.

Hi All,

I am quite new to this system and just recently I am seeing some odd things happening which this tread seems to confirm.
I have a 5kW gen 2 Hybrid with 2 9.5kW batteries, all fed fro a south facing 6.4kw array.
The weather the last few days has been sunny and clear,
I updated the battery software last week and since, I am seeing the solar output drop, even when in bright sunlight.
I regularly see 5.4 kw output before the upgrade, this has dropped to 4.8kW but once the battery has charged the solar output drops to only a few hundred watts (around 600W) while the sky is still clear and bright. and very low export back to the grid.

Thank you Dragon, a swift and helpful reply, so how to update from D0.906-A0.906 to 909, will be my next question... To be fair the system has been great, It had a few issues like suddenly dropping the charge level from 20 to zero in five mins, but this was only very occasionally, and the figure at the top of the dashboard best use as a guide rather than accurate.

But I found them to be a minor distraction, as I just tended to let it do its thing, was not looking to become obsessed with it, although that's almost exactly where it went.

I am on the Flux tariff and have ECO set with timed discharge 16:00 till 19:00, and timed charge when needed.

Hi, think I'm getting issues with my setup too. Been very sunny for past 3 days, and my 7.5kWh system doesn't go over 1.5kWh (Gen 1 AC Coupled).
Edit: I've got a Solis inverter (3 strings), which states that its producing 3.5kWh, but GE is only showing 1.4kWh, is this a firmware/software issue or installation issue?

Cpt Darling The AC3 inverter has a blue CT to monitor the 3rd party solar output. Does all 3 Solis inverter live wires pass through the same CT? Or are the Inverters joined on a Sub board, and the feed to this pass through the CT? (My setup, 2 Solax and 1 Solis)

Cpt Darling Both the EM115 and OB115 meters appear to have one black and one white core from (presumably) its CT. Both meters have the same measuring capability (max 100A primary produces 330mV secondary) which implies that the CTs have the same turns ratio and therefore, either could be used for Id1 or Id2. Even if the CTs as supplied in the box were swapped over, they would still work as designed. Assuming the solar meter is set as Id2, then the values being reported in the Givenergy portal are correct inasmuch as they will show whether the solar inverter is generating or not and whether the AC-connected is charging or discharging.

It could be that the values being measured are lower than expected; caused by electrical interference in the black and white wires, or it could be that the values are correct and your house load is higher than you think. You could try checking that the grid CT is clipped properly. If it's a solid core, happy days. Another thing you could do is to twist the black and white cores from each CT to its meter in a helix (like the cat 5 cable pairs are). That would reduce the affects of electrical interference, but only attempt this if you're happy working around the consumer unit and you isolate all supplies (grid and both inverters at the inverters) before you do the twisting.

jocky You could try a force discharge for a couple of minutes, or failing that turn the battery on/off.

My battery did this recently whereby the cells "went out of spec", and forcing a discharge brought them back into spec.

No guarantees, but surely worth a try.

I don't have the serious problems of some of those above, but my solar output is being capped and I can't see which setting is causing this.

String 2 (5 * 410 W) faces east and shows a smooth curve of rising power, starting at 5 am, peaking at 10 am, falling after that. String 1 (13 * 410 W) faces south. Power output starts to rise at 8 am, but is flat at 3.9 kW from 11:20 to now (late afternoon).

Before today I thought the limit was the 5 kW inverter limit. But today I carefully managed the battery so that it did not fully charge until 14:40 - there were three hours with 5 kW production, 1 kW going to house, 2 kW going to export, 2 kW going to battery (the limit I set to slow the charge). Why did String 1 output not continue to rise after 11:20 as it received more solar input? It was not the 5 kW inverter limit (or export limit) because 40 % of the power was direct DC solar charging the DC battery so not hitting the inverter. It was not any sort of overall output cap because as string 2 decreased, string 1 stayed a the same level. When the battery became fully charged you can see a further cap hitting the PV output where now all the power is needing to go through the inverter to be exported.

So I have some sort of limit on the generation of string 1 that caps its output at about 3.8 kW, but can't see this in any inverter settings. Any suggestions? There may be few days in the year when I can expect to see close to the 7 kWp that my panels are rated at - but today should be one.

I’d look on the portal at the PV data and see if the string current is hitting the inverter limit. Which from memory is 13A on Gen 2

909 firmware fixes this.

I have 4.6 peak kW south 2.5 east, and just hit the cap on the south string.

What do the various headings in the PV inverter column data refer to?

Also I noted that I only seem to data showing in one of my inverters but not the other. Is this another symptom of the dual inverter data problem? As if I go back to before my system was converted to a plant I can see data for one string on each inverter?

Thay maybe worded it wrong.
The update failed.
There are 2 stuck files on your internal dongle.
So these need removing. Using a USB A to USB A lead.
Can be done by the user easily.
But likely you won't have this. 4 quid on amazon.

@TheDragon (GivEnergy) Has anyone seen similar behaviour on a Gen 3 5Hyb? Ours was installed early June and we are seeing throttling back - often to zero - once VPV approaches/exceeds 500V. Reckon we’ve already lost over 100kW as a result. Not clear that this is related to a fully-charged battery, though.
Is there an option to manually update our FW?

TheDragon (GivEnergy) I have only just joined this discussion because my installation is only two weeks old, so please explain the “PV 50% per string feature”. My strings are not equal being split 13:11 due East/West: is that the problem? Total VPV is still under 550V but not under 500V (13 x 41.7 = 542.1V Voc).

rjp Interesting if grid voltage comes into play. My logs only show grid VAC above 250V during the night. And since the VAC is an RMS value I am not sure what significance it might have for the inverter.

Were the panels specced at STC for Voc, or -10C?

If they go over 600v you will damage the inverter

That's 11 Trina Vertex S 425W on a single string.

Seems odd that we're seeing string voltages anywhere near 500V, as Vmp at STC should be just 464V.

TheDragon (GivEnergy) The only data sheet I have specs at STC where Voc = 41.7, Vmp = 34.6. These are Perlight 425W smart black panels. The temperature coefficient of Voc is stated as -0.27%/°C so from 25 to -10 is 41.7 x 1.002735 = 41.7 x 1.0989 = 45.827 which on 13 panels is 595.75V. But we are going to change to 12:12 soon.
It looked as if the MPPT was working properly this morning. The sun rises over the trees at about 8:30 at the moment. Just before it did the voltage was 498, PVP1 = 554W; immediately after it was 410, PVP1 = 3371W which is closer to the optimal 13 x 34.6 = 449.8; then settled around 460V. But why let it get to 498 in the first place? (Sorry - steep learning-curve - so apologies if I am not getting this right.)
Things go wrong when the West array kicks in seriously, usually around noon. After that if East array hits about 500 both arrays get killed even though West is only around 420.

What's more concerning than the shutdown is that the inverter reckoned that the string voltage suddenly shot up by 100V. MPPV on the string should be ~465V so I've no idea why we get this - unless it's somehow related to the high grid voltage issue.

Yours looks like it's just bubbling under 500. Mine has rapid swings to 500....

My theory is that my inverter removed the load from the PV because the grid voltage is out of range (>253) , and the panel (because of no load) jump to Voc voltage...

This GivEnergy system is absolutely awful, not a cloud in the sky and I’m generating a few hundred watts. Battery refuses to discharge when required and therefore I’m importing from the grid. GivEnergy customer support are completely useless and so is my installer. My only option is legal action.

hazelst3 You’re not going to get much help with comments like that. How about you list your equipment, with current firmware versions and perhaps we can help. Panels/Inverter/Battery etc

For all we know the installer could have wired it to the moon, and therefore not the equipments fault. Many happy GivEnergy customers out there, so perhaps work with us to try and resolve your issue.

If it’s really that bad, something is fundamentally wrong and perhaps we can figure it out?

My Inverter -> Grid Data, then sort by Voltage descending and you'll see the highest voltages you're getting.

If it's over 253 contact you DNO.

hazelst3 This forum is not for venting (even though your system clearly has issues) its purpose is to describe your fault in detail and as others have said list your system set-up.
Then there may be a fix, possibly updating software, possibly your installer needs to come back. I’ve personally never found legal action anything other than painful.

I have no axe to grind or cause to fight, but your issues sound more like installation problems than equipment.
Our system has been running for just two weeks: generation almost 500kW; grid usage 29kW of which 19kW were the battery self-calibration in the first 24 hours; export 260kW.
There are issues, but they seem to be firmware-related. Specifically: throttling when voltage gets around 500V; using the grid when the battery is full; GE app reports peak power even if it only occurs momentarily, which is alarming/misleading. But I accept that we are early-adopters in a relatively new industry, so think these issues within acceptable bounds.
Unfortunately these systems are multi-variable, so identifying where the real problems are is tricky, but bad design or installation are as likely as equipment problems.

the 500v issue is on the list for investigation by the lab team, the MPPT spec states 550v, unless something has changed in the last few weeks.

If the grid voltage is high, the MPPT will detune the solar to reduce the contribution to the issue, as the panels de-tune, the voltage rises, till there is no power at all and you are at Voc

Thanks, that makes sense and does confirm what I'm seeing. Is the detune gradual, or a hard cut-off at 253V? As before, some "detuning" notification would be really useful.

We seem to be in the hands of the DNO now. Fingers crossed they can sort it quickly.
