I am in the incredibly fortunate position to have been able to have an EMS for my multi AC3 setup running for almost a year now. This has been brilliant, it works perfectly without fault.

My serious frustration is on behalf of others who are still struggling to solve the behaviour of their multi inverter setups, especially now that there is the latest write cycle issue that has come to light.

Michael Smith has worked incredibly hard behind the scenes at GE to bring the EMS to life, but as far as I can tell, the higher ups at GE seem to have been dragging their heels for the past 3 years in getting the EMS out. This is getting absolutely ridiculous. There are working Hybrid and AC3 EMS versions that exist but GE refuses to push through the EMS.

The write cycles issue, the cross charging issue, the balancing issue, the portal issue, and the usability issues (not fit for purpose springs to mind) will ALL disappear if GE just release the EMS. So instead of telling those that have spent time writing these scripts to go and make changes to solve GE's problem, how about GE solve the problem with the solution they already have but are too intent on getting new products out to market to care about the existing customers that have put their trust and significant sums of money into the hands of GE.

GivEnergy stated at the time of both mine and others' purchases that multi inverter systems were, and I quote, "not recommended". Given the issues people have found, if GE were not willing to push out a widely available EMS, they should have said "not supported" as they are two very different things.

I really hope GE decides to try and restore some faith in its customers and solve the issues above with the EMS. Along with fixing the ongoing battery issues. I cannot recommend GE to anyone until they solve these problems and will point them towards a Powerwall.

Finally instead of bashing Predbat or balance inverters, how about we focus on were the real solution should lie... at the foot of GE.

ChrisRowe Yes that was what I heard last year. Though more recently the 'commercial' argument seems to have come out that it would hurt their AIO sales and so GE higher ups are not keen to push it through. Disgraceful really.

Al E.Gator If that is true, it’s madness. Spend all the time effort and money developing an EMS, decide that the product direction is wrong so restart the development process again, more time effort and money, to at the end decide not to launch the product.

Indeed, I wonder how long before it all starts falling apart as there seems to be no cohesive plan or focus. Must be a frustrating situation for the technical team, wonder if we'll see the more talented ones jumping ship for pastures new.

geoffreycoan I think the biggest thing is that so many people were promised the EMS before they had their installs and so went ahead with multiple inverters and batteries. I still believe the most technologically simple solution would just be to develop an add-on or script that could be run on an RPi/HA/PC whatever, that you just connect the inverters through with a couple of RS485 adapters and then happy days, all the people with multiple inverters are happy or that want to make regular writes to their inverters, and GE doesn't have to spend time or resource bringing something to market. Everything seems to have to be a long drawn out convoluted process!

Yep. That was me too. Went ahead ordering dual inverter and 4 battery system (3 month lead time) fully expecting the “coming soon” EMS to be available at install time. Along with many others. Then waiting frustratingly for a year and a half and counting after install and it’s still not available.

Is it really true they might not release it??? Where did that rumour come from? Surely can’t be true?

It would be an utterly insane business move if they don’t release it ! They’ll lose so many potential customers. Not to mention alienate the ones that have plant systems already. Why would you possibly want to prevent selling a second inverter and more batteries to people who might want to expand what they have already with the arrival of say a new EV or new heat pump for example? Without the EMS pushed out you’re going to hobble your sales in exactly these sort of scenarios (they would be shooting themselves in the foot) ! Can’t see how bringing out an EMS device that allows multiple products to work together could possibly affect AOI sales. If anything they might sell a few more AOI’s !

Really hope the rumour isn’t true.

Pete UK Yeah I'm not saying they won't, just appears from the surface and rumours I've heard that they're dragging their heels for commercial reasons. I can see why they want to do it, moving towards the high voltage all in one side, but completely agree with you as you say that it would massively alienate their customers if they don't.

I would agree. I went multi inverter at the time as it was the only way to get the discharge level I needed rather than hobble myself with a single inverter.

I was informed that EMS would be available “soon”. It now more than 2 years since my system was installed, and I’ve gone the Ha route to balance my inverters. I have been offered a “demo/beta” unit, but decided I wanted to wait as my system is working relatively well, plus the unit would never be “mine” basically just a long term
Loan and there were probably more people who needed one more than I.

I still intend to go EMS if/when it’s ever released as it allows for the faster FW which I’m unable to access at the moment without it. (Unless of course they never release it and I’ll reach upgrade point of the battery before then!)Every conversation I’ve had with Michael smith by email suggests that they are literally just doing a box ticking exercise till it’s released (CE cert etc), yet your comments make me worry a little now.

But if they never intend to release it, why have it up on the display stands at recent shows?

I had two hybrid inverters fitted as my solar array exceeded the capacity of a single inverter, and I’ve got batteries on each.

It was only after install did I realise that that this multi-inverter plant setup wasn’t recommended and that the two inverters didn’t know about each other.

TBH they work fairly well together as it stands, I do get cross charging from one to another but it’s not that severe and I’m kinda used to it now so I’m not sure I would buy the EMS if/when it comes out. Would be nice to see the two inverters as a single unified system in HA, but I’d imagine it would cost circa £1000 for the kit and the install work, so I’m doubting I’d see that much benefit to make it worthwhile.

Be nice to have the choice though of course

What I am struggling with is I have Gen1 Hy5.0 though I dont think that is relevant.
I have a 9.5 battery and can buy another 9.5 battery PLUS a GivEnergy cable specifically to connect the two batteries together, yet this seems to be not supported. Why sell the cable?

Apparently Midsummer Wholesale has them. The problem is that my original installer doesn't want to know and has said he's heard nothing about how to install them. I'm, once again, left utterly screwed by the actions of GE and their refusal to allow people to contact them and their insistence on locking their system down so that the end user is no more than a casual bystander.

I too find it frustrating we can’t do some level of self-control. Adding an extra battery for instance is just a matter of setting dip switches and plugging it in, doesn’t need to be a closed ecosystem.

Al E.Gator This is a dumb argument. We have one AC3 with 2 x 9.6kW batteries. House now has ASHP and so in winter the AC3 is woefully inadequate - I could do with 8-10kW to a) allow me to move to a overnight rate but with shorter hours, and b) avoid peak rate electricity usage when heating comes on as well as oven etc. If there was a supported EMS solution we'd consider getting another GI set up, but if they can't get their sht together then we'll look at replacing the whole thing with another manufacturer.

I only found out that once the system was installed that multi-inverter plant setup wasn’t recommended and that the two inverters would not communicate with each other. This is a issue to me because I paid to have a EPS installed as well and then found that it would only work with one inverter.

I needed the charge/discharge levels from two inverters for the house, I have a EV, heat pump installed as well now.

I have been very lucky that I had no real issues on my system waiting for the EMS for the last two years but I am running with old firmware on my four batteries.

I still intend to go EMS but playing the waiting game for now.

GE are total garbage, thier latest wheeze is closing the phone lines due to the unprecedented number of calls caused by the storm last weekend. I don't know which storm or which weekend they are talking about but they are just such a bunch of feckless cowboys I'd be happier ripping their crap out of my house and giving money to Elon Musk - God help me!

I have a gen1 hybrid inverter with a 8.2 and I'd like to add another 8.2 but there is no point adding it to the same inverter due to the low discharge rate, especially if we go down the ASHP route. If the EMS existed I could consider adding another inverter and battery to get the higher discharge rate along side the extra storage but with no EMS I'd need to consider other options other than GE so not selling the EMS might lose them a sale.
Only way to guarantee me staying with GE is to sell the EMS or have a good enough trade-in process to make moving from hybrid to AIO worth it.

Smk82 That would be a big move to make a lot of existing customers happy. Let's just hope it's not set at a completely exorbitant price point. Personally £1-200 would be the price I would pay vs managing with GivTCP and home assistant after they sort out the write cycle issue.

From reading the forums I think people have problems getting the 2 batteries to "balance" together well and keep receiving various firmware updates.
It should not be like this.

Vestas That is an absurd price if that is for the residential EMS and not commercial. It's all very well bringing out more powerful hybrids, but only being compatible with HV batteries means that anyone who took the plunge on GE in the earlier days (i.e. 99% of people), will be stuck with their LV batteries and no sufficient way of controlling them. An upgrade for me as an example from LV to HV to keep the same storage capacity would be a £20k plus spend... not happening.

I don't often "defend" GE but its not an absurd price when you look at the cost of a dual-inverter system. Its pretty much inline with what I was expecting - about half the price of an AC3 inverter, so about 20% of the system cost (excluding batteries). The "gateway" for the AIO is more expensive and that doesn't do a lot really.

Vestas I’m with Al E.Gator , £500 is an absurd price for people that already have their inverters and battery systems installed as people will just not bother getting it given the benefits are limited.

For people buying new systems then maybe the price at half an inverter price is reasonable because it just gets lost in the whole big price for solar panels, inverters, batteries, etc, but I’d think most people getting a new install would buy the AIO rather than an AC3 or Hybrid inverter as they have faster charge & discharge rates, more storage capacity, whole house backup and are proven to be extendable to 3 units already.

The target market for the EMS is in my view therefore existing customers that have bought into the GivEnergy ecosystem, but at a grand or so installed, I doubt they will sell many at all. So all the R&D costs and few sales.
That’s my predication anyway

Vestas Agree with geoffreycoan here. Trouble is, it's not how you depict it at the moment, you can pick AC3's up now for circa £500 and even below £400 on ITS Tech at the moment. If you're spending £1000 on inverters and 2 batteries at £2700 each, you're pretty much at the price of a PW3 and after the increased losses are taken into account of the LV GE kit, you barely get any more capacity. If you then have to add on a £1000 EMS that effectively is essential, it makes quite a few of their products obsolete and completely uncompetitive. This kind of goes back to my point that they should just say that their kit doesn't work with multiple inverters, if you want higher power then you're not our customers. IF they had said that from the start then fair enough to them, but to string people along saying it's 'not recommended' over this length of time and then to come out saying 'hey you know that solution you found using home assistant? Can't use that anymore or it will brick your inverters, buy our £1000 EMS instead and be happy' is totally unacceptable. The alternative is why don't GE just release the software instead of an actual physical product, make a HA add on or something and just make people buy rs485 converters for a few quid. Enough of my ramblings, but I just think it doesn't do any good for the brand and pushes people to others (i.e. PW3)... including myself.

For new systems I think that train left the station long ago.

My understanding is that PolarESS is the "low-voltage GE product" and actual GE products are all going to be HV from now on. Maybe they'll need the EMS too?

I don't think they have any sort of "plan" for product development, they just sort of react retrospectively (& poorly) to Tesla products and that's not going to end well.

If GE still exist at the end of my warranty (2033) then I'll be astonished. Edit - frankly I'll be very surprised if they're still around 5 years from now.

Had the EMS been available 18 months ago I would have purchased it with another AC3. Separated my two 8.2 batteries and reduced my import under load above 2850W. Now that we have limited charge rates at low temperatures, batteries in unheated garage, my two batteries are charged at 1.5kWh and so unaffected by 3017. They would be with an EMS.
The answer to my equipment is an AC4 . Capable of covering 3kW kettle etc and 250W baseload, also able to convert all of 3.5kW from microinverters to DC if necessary.

At low temps the battery charge rate is limited to 0.25C IE 2.05kWh so an AC4 would be sufficient. An AC5 would be welcome if available.

We put in a gen2 5kw hybrid inverter and 2x9.5kwh batteries coming up to 2 years ago now. Before committing we spoke to GE about expanding the system in the near future as we replace our heating system etc. The charge/discharge rate has always been a concern for me, compared to their competitors. We were told about the EMS and that it would be coming soon, and we'd be able to add more solar and a second inverter as our demand increased.

Forward to now and we're planning that expansion. I spoke with customer services about the EMS recently and was told they had 3 different versions coming to market 'shortly' and the only way to obtain one currently was to speak to my installer and see if they could get on the beta programme.

Alternatively, I was told a multi-string AIO was coming to market as well, but that would mean replacing our whole system! Not happening only 2 years in.

Hopefully the January rumours are true, I actually think there are plenty of existing customers, like us, who want to expand their systems as we move more and more to all electric living. GE can't honestly think we're all going to ditch our considerable investments and start again.

Alternatively, they could just release a multi-string, high output/input hybrid inverter, you know, like their competitors (Fox, Sunsynk, etc), that existing battery customers could swap in.

Arron The low voltage batteries have discharge capped at 4kw, so I don’t think we’ll see a backwards compatible inverter with high IO rate. For those of us with the old LV kit, multiple inverters is going to be the only way.

As you know, the 9.5 Gen 1 / 2, has a discharge current of 80A. Polar ESS meanwhile has a discharge current of 100A, peaking to 120A for 15s, allowing for the discharge to 6kw. I'm assuming the discharge current for the 9.5 can't be uprated retrospectively, because that would cook something inside. Would love to be corrected on this – can you share any more information?

I doubt it can be done because the batteries are daisy chained together so everything to/from the second battery has to flow through the first battery, so the throughput of a single battery is the limiting factor, and then the inverter limit

Avenir yet seemingly get higher power on polar out of the same box which is a bit back to front. I.e a 6kW hybrid in a gen3 shell.

So can we infer from your comment, that the EMS that is planned to be released in January 2024 (ish) is purely only for AC3 inverters?

Or will it also work with Gen 3 hybrid 5.0 inverters?

Or is that going to be a different version of the EMS released at a different future date? And if so when is that planned?

One thing I’m finding extremely excruciating is the wait and lack of information; and actually trying to get any sort of proper information about when a permanent solution for the cross charging is coming for my 5.0 Hybrid inverter system.

Any info would be highly appreciated. Even if it’s not the news you think we’d want to hear.

A bit of clarity would go a long way.

Pete UK hopefully you'll get an official reply but it was my understanding that the Hybrid compatible version would be called HEMS not CEMS and therfore it would purely be AC coupled for this Jan planned one. There was a (now deleted) thread on a GivTCP group that i beleive Mick mentioned this.

The version that has been ENA type tested and approved certainly only mentions AC coupled units which would somewhat back this up.

hoggy It was my understanding as well that the initial release of the EMS/CEMS was for AC coupled only. Be nice to hear it confirmed from @TheDragon (GivEnergy) or anyone else at GivEnergy alongwith what the future plans are.

Interesting that the above diagram shows an ASHP load CT clamp. Wonder what that’s for and why separated out from the grid supply clamp to measure house load?

Hmmm. That’s what I inferred from the post.

Nice that something will soon become available for those with an AC plant inverter system.

But what about the “HEMS”? Has it been tested? Is it in the pipeline? Is there a plan for when it’ll be released? Will a hybrid one even be released? Will we have to wait long for this or will it be available soon after the AC version is released?

With increased electricity usage there must be loads of people (considering a hybrid plant installation or) with a single hybrid 5.0 inverter and single 9.5kW battery (or maybe for those with two batteries on one inverter already) who are considering two hybrid inverters with a battery on each to get the extra storage capacity AND the increased charge/ discharge rates to cover peak usage from home, heat pump load etc. people aren’t going to pull all that out to put in an AIO, they’ll just want to expand their current system to achieve a similar or better overall result wrt import/ export rates (6.9kW battery charge/ 8kW battery export/ 7.2kW battery home demand) and reduced charging/ discharging times and of course 19kW of storage.
If its a choice of being unable to add extra capacity currently due to lack of a hybrid EMS or having to wait an unknown period of time people will be saying; “I won’t bother buying anything extra until the EMS is out, it’s not worth the hassle of the cross charging, I’ll just live with higher electricity bills for now”. GE are missing a trick here and loads of potential sales by delaying a hybrid EMS release.

I’m finding the not knowing and the wait for a hybrid EMS really frustrating. I’ve had my system over 18 months and I’m sure the hybrid inverters have been out for a lot longer than that.

As I said above, some kind of info as to what the plan/ timescale is for the hybrid EMS would be very much appreciated. Even if it’s not set in concrete a rough idea or ANY info would better than nothing at all and us speculating.

Any info would be great but if a hems is coming out will it work with gen1 inverters and will it work with a mix of gens!? If I get another inverter I doubt I'd be able to get another gen1 to match my existing inverter!
I want a ashp but my 8.2 battery with a discharge of 2.6kw won't be up to the job and I need to plan my future inverter/battery needs. Now it's up to GE to decide if I add to my existing GE or look to replace which might not be GE!

I did email Jason Howlett and got an almost immediate response. He provided reasons why the phone lines had been cut to end-users and told me it was a temporary measure. He also put me in touch with the technical team, who have been in touch separately to offer solutions and I'm now waiting on my installer. It is a sad state of affairs when you have to write to the CEO of a company to get any customer service, although in this case it did work, or at least has so far.

Looking at Mr Howlett's LinkedIn profile, it's clear his remit is to make money and, in turn, profit. Lots of it. There are only two ways of doing this, selling more or spending less (often both!) and I do hope that if the revenue is drying-up due to competition or, dare I say, an uncompetitive product, costs aren't cut in the technical and support department.

I'm grateful to @TheDragon (GivEnergy) for the information regarding the EMS being commercial and not domestic, not least because I ordered one and then cancelled it after reading his post. Crazy that it's not called out as being either one or the other when there are existing customers, myself included, who have been told by GE that "the only solution for you is our EMS". Even if it is in beta, it really needs to be released if it has been "manufactured out of necessity to solve cases such as [my] own".

geoffreycoan I think in this scenario it would be 1 battery to 1 inverter? with the EMS stopping them cross-charging and so on. If this was available I can see us adding more batteries as we switch to a heatpump.

Vestas Just the usual excuse about bad weather (floods/fire/brimstone) and wanting to prioritise the installers' ability to contact them. My installer is here today and says he can't get hold of them either. Another reason he and his firm are no longer promoting GE kit for new installs.

What I need from GivEnergy is just a single AC unit that can do 10kW charge and discharge with low voltage batteries for my house as I now have a 9kW ASHP installed.

I would be able to fully charge my four batteries on the IOG tariff in winter (I can only do 3 batteries with the dual AC3) and avoid peak rate electricity usage when heating comes on as well as oven etc.

I understand that I could add another AC3 if I buy the EMS to but the other issue I have with the dual AC3 I can only one AC inverter on my EPS.

I am using two SolarEdge inverters as my solar panels are split between two roof with optimizers for shading.

I had an EMS installed an hour ago. I have 2xAC inverters each with a single battery - so a plant system for around 2 years now.

  • The cloud portal now looks correct, at last!
  • The app shows 1 battery, click on that and I can still see each of the batteries - nice!
  • I've just updated GIVTCP from v2 to v3 and I can see the EMS and easy to update the battery graphs. I have disabled the battery balancing script.

Oh here we go I've found 2 things:
I also had the GE EV Charger installed today. I can only select 1 active charge slot due to the old inverters, the app allows me to enter many but only 1 can be active. I'm on Cosy Octopus which has 3 cheap timeslots. The EMS supports 3 for Giv battery charging but the EV charger's only 1 charge slot. ARGH!!

The batteries are not Lead Acid !!

@[deleted] I can't answer for EV slots but I had a similar slot problem with my Gen 1 system I get round this by using MyEnergyOptimiser. It is a fairly simple system once you start using it, In your case you could contact the developer and pose the question.

If it can be done he can tell you how (maybe do it). If it can't he may amend his program so it can.

My Installer has just informed that the EMS V1 it will cost £660 to install to my existing dual AC coupled system with our four batteries. I have upgrade the batteries to BMS 3020.

Is the EMS worth spending the money?

I know it does allow three charging slots now and have found that it will gives you three how export slots as well.

Any other updates that I should be aware off.

Small update on my 1st month of having an EMS and Giv's EV Charger.
As I type this, my two batteries are upgrading from 3017 to 3020 firmware - no idea what difference that will make, there's no published release notes.
Having the EMS and Giv's EV charger has removed the need for balancing the batteries on home assistant and the mobile app and cloud portal finally it's all correct and works just how it should, I do like it.
Why the EMS thinks I have lead acid batteries is a bit daft but hardly the end of the world. I don't know if EMS' will have OTA firmware updates.
EV Charger - Very disappointing this isn't on Octopus Energy's compatible EV Chargers. I've seen a comment somewhere from a GIV employee it's with Octopus to sort out. Well I think it's for both of you to sort out. And now Octopus £30 a month 'all you can eat' EV charge your product is further behind the competition.
The charger has 3 charge slots, great! I'm on Octopus Cosy which is perfect in winter for my ASHP to suck the life out of the batteries over 3 cheap charges a day. But - the sadist Giv EV app only allows the end user to use 1 of the 3 charge slots, what the heck is that all about - you can setup 3 charge slots and only use one. Totally mental.

The app has lagged behind inverter capabilities for some time. Probably a different development team

You can set the three slots up in the givenergy portal, and if you are on Cosy it could be just a do-once task. Can then amend the first slot in the app, but have to use the portal for slots 2 and 3 amendments
